It is a songwriters secret weapon for the reasons you mentioned... I've been a long time fan the J-45 and Gibson slopes in general. Funny story related to the J-45 and singing over it. I have a friend who about 13 years ago would argue with me about the J-45. In the Guitar Center showroom, next to a Martin D28 he thought it sounded horrible and told me no one should pay the asking price for a J-45... So next time we went in together, I brought a pocket recorder and did this test where I had him sing over the Martin and then the same song over the J-45... Listening back, he noticed how much less strained and natural his voice seemed to sound over the J-45 and how clear it was. He ended up buying one later that year and it's been his main guitar ever since.

Neil Young seems to do okay with his Martin dreads . I do get your point though and I think there’s less overtones on a J45 which may compliment the voice better.

I was stationed in Denver in 1966. I was at a folk club that year. A fellow was playing a J-50. I spoke with him between sets about Gibson guitars and that I was in the market for a better guitar than I already had. He said a J-45 would have been his first choice except for the price. I later found a J-50 from '66 that cost me $250, purchased in '67. Not all models sound the same from the same year, it is true. I found a great one that I had for many decades. Never regretted my choice. The pick guard and blonde top are the give away as to the model-- easily recognized.

Short scale, not for the ease of play, but the sound. My 2000 J45 has a deep mysterious soul. It teaches me. First owner was a touring singer/songwriter. He died. Then a young woman bought it for her dying boyfriend who always wanted a J45. He died. I will say it's haunted, and in the most beautiful way.
I've played some J 185s belonging to other players recently. Short scale. They are like genius children with old souls waiting to learn everything. Beyond my means, but good to know they exist. Still, I would not trade my J45. When I buy the farm, and somebody else gets it, my soul will be added to its voice and mystery too.

I spent decades in the vintage-guitar-catch-and-release program, owned a couple hundred through the years, played countless more. I even had a 1950 J-45 along the way ... always the quest for Excalibur. While shopping for some sort of archtop jazz piece I absentmindedly lifted a somewhat shopworn, new and unsold '05 J-45 Historic Collection off the hook at a Guitar Center. The minute my hand went around the neck to lift it, I thought, "I'm home," and "why is MY guitar on the wall of this shop?" All the disparate playing styles I had developed over 30 years of playing rapidly began merging into where I am today, playing "bareknuckle" guitar and tying everything together. It's not just that it's my favorite guitar EVER; it's not just that I feel inspired to play it, and new musical ideas come flowing whenever I have this one out; this guitar, THIS J-45, makes me smile every time I play it, I can literally just play idle chords and listen to the notes decay at their differing rates and marvel at the blended quality of the sound. I always feel a little sad and wistful when it's time to return it to its case.
It doesn't hurt that when you walk into a guitar store and say, "You need a whole battery of different guitars to nail different genres," the J-45 always answers, "Hold my beer."

I think your comparison nailed the utility and the strength for a singer-songwriter using a J45! The notes leave the sound hole, dance quikly across the spruce top and Get Out Of The Way!

Good info! The J45 can also allow room for other instruments, like mandolin, as well as voice. I’ve owned a 2014 J45 Traditional - wonderful guitar - and now the Collings take on it, CJ45 T, with nickel bronze strings and only use it for picking on instrumental or solo music. A nice contrast and complement to the OM or 00 guitars with phosphor bronze strings I use for finger style.

That is my experience with them... even the new ones in last 20 yrs sound so different one from another... I never was really convinced. But I like their dry middy sound, and all Gibson acoustics .. having a few (185, 200, HBird, LG2) , I dont see me buying a J45... it would have to be a really special one

I bought a used 2018 j-45 a couple years ago and it was that “ah-ha!” moment as far as vocal accompaniment goes. Gibson’s in general just seem to have that dryer “low-fi” sound, but especially the j-45.

The J45 design is magical . I have a China made epiphone that's built like a j45, I beleive they called it a J100 . It sounds absolutely awesome. I was so impressed I thought to myself I have to get the real deal, I wont mind paying a couple grand for a gibson that sounds that good .Well I have played about six or so and they don't sound as good as the China made epiphone I have . I always wanted to get into inlay work, so I started practicing on the epiphone and it looks like a gibson now .Other people must found out how good the Epiphones sound because you can't touch one for what I paid , $100 10 years ago .

As I say, in front of a mic, the complexity comes through and the guitar really shines. Just me. Thank you the video. It’s is excellent info to think about when signing with a guitar.

One of the things I didn't communicate well in this video was that sounding good, and sounding good in a mix aren't always the same. I've struggled a long time with just j45s without the context of a full mix. But I think they serve a mix particularly well because they have a specific sound and range they take up. That said, its all subjective to styles and preferences. I
