I think DeSilva was the one who knocked on her door. But it was Escridge who did the crime. And the fact that both those men showed up at her trailer that night, and looked similar is just an unfortunate coincidence. It’s believable that the victim assumed they were the same person, and that when DeSilva was at her window, that was likely the clearest look she got between the two men. And I think after DeSilva heard about the attack at the same trailer that same night, and that the police sketch looked like him. I think he knew how bad it looked for him, and that’s why he cared so much about the real person being found.
Why would a random man from several miles away drive there by coincidence to knock on her door? It's pretty obvious he associated himself with the crime after it took place
So let me get this straight: the first suspect looks just like the attacker, he seems to be obsessed with the crime and keeps saying he’s “sorry,” AND he draws a smiley face on the application he fills out. And this is all just a coincidence? What the hell? Also, what is the explanation for the prints not matching the guy who apparently did it?
This is why eye witness is usually totally unreliable. Unless you known someone within the last 5 years, eye witness is unreliable. I can't positively ID someone I know from ten years ago. Rape test kit DNA is always definitive. The glass fingerprint issue is very curious. They should have been able to ID everyone who has touched that glass. Did they do that work? She seems confident of her ability to ID, but our eyes fail us often.

@MasterNoob96 What a stupid comment. This case is clearly a fluke, how often do you find doppelgangers of a rapist flocking to the victim to apologize? Dude looked exactly like the offender here. And on top of it, the dude was mentally ill and acted weird infront of police. Hindsight is 20/20 my dude, you weren't there and you don't grasp the concept at all.
Norris I agree, as long as she had some training. And part of that training should be to never shoot if you’re not sure who you’re shooting at. That way she won’t accidentally kill an innocent person who she thinks is an attacker. Also, children should be familiar with guns as potentially dangerous tools. Just like knives, power tools, or the stove. Locking guns away and never talking about them leads kids to think they’re toys, so if they ever get their hands on them they play with them.
My question is how ironic that the accused drew a smiling face on the application form and the other man drew a smiling face on her back? How do you harmonize that when the 2 men didn’t know each other? Is that mere co incidence?
@@Dmil2424 that would make a lot more sense. if both suspects knew someone that lived in that trailerpark, they probably knew each other and DaSilva probably knew about the smiley face and was indeed taunting the police, especially since he knew he was innocent anyway!

I can’t help but wonder if the man that knocked on her door and asked to use the phone wasn’t the man that returned to attack her and that’s why the first suspect felt responsible, acted bizarrely and she misidentified him.
Or he learned about the crime from the real attacker and felt the need to apologize for the attacker's deeds since he could not turn him in due to some unknown reason. Him knowing about the smiley face thing is very puzzling.
He had the mugshot taped to his windshield, so most likely he didn’t know the attacker The actual attacker only knocked on the door as a ploy to see if there was a man was inside I don’t think Doug Desilva was ever at the house

Not finding fingerprints is a whole different story than having fingerprints that don’t match. DNA doesn’t match! Accept it, it’s not the man. He might have been having blackouts and was afraid thAt he had done it. Kay may have been in shock too.
I think DeSilva believed that he did it without remembering. What Kay took as his confession was likely him confessing in the most honest way possible.
God was with Kay .she is one remarkable woman after all ages been thru .she could of still remember certain things .love this narrator who talks for forensic files .
Da silva was associate in the crime, The family didn't realize there were two attackers . No way he would have known about the smiley face. He said sorry to kay and admitted to being there, he knew his goose was cooked thus says " I don't remember stabbing you" to make it appear like memory lapse leaving his chances open , He was careful not to set up his friend by saying am not the one who stabbed you which would have introduced a second suspect. Notably he went missing after being released for fear of further evidence being recovered . He got lucky because he didn't participate in the rape. The woman was traumatized and she had only one image of the man she saw first .
The lights were on during the attack, and both mom and son said it was only one person. I dunno. The prints didn’t match EITHER suspect, so they’re very likely not related to the case. Plastic cups can hold a print for a really long time, it’s an ideal preservation surface. Those prints could have come from a party they had a month before, and those incompetent cops would never know.

All these episodes CLEARLY show that there are heartless horrible maniacs in almost every city in America. Knowing this, any woman that spends time alone and does not own a gun is risking her life.
I don't own a gun currently (I am hoping to possibly get one in the near future but considering that I have a Bi Polar diagnosis IDK if that's actually going to be possible), but I do have both a pocket blade and mace that I carry on me at all times. I even have them on me if I'm just going to get the mail. Which is honestly horrible when you think about it that I need to do that but as a young lady, I'm not willing to take the risk of walking to the mailbox or the corner store unarmed. Because I know (sadly from personal experience) that the one time I would go somewhere unarmed is the one time I would need something to defend myself with. So despite the rather decent chance of police seeing the blade and stopping me I would still rather have it and never need to actually use it than need it but not have it. The nice thing is that where I live police seem to understand that and are respectful of my choice to open carry my blade since in theory anyway being able to see that I am armed like that a would be attacker is a little more likely to reconsider any attempt to confront me than they otherwise would
NO way its just a coincidence that he asks for a forms to apply for state security in a heated case interview and then ends up drawing a smiling face ,the same as was drawn on the victim. More damning is he vanishes into thin air after the said perpetrator was caught. Nothing gets more bizarre than this
Everything DaSilva did was certainly strange that it still leaves me with some questions. Too nuch coincidents right ? Maybe they were friends ...but hope that was all really coincidents.

The two men are the same; there aren't two men. There's just no way the "first man" drew a smiley face on the police application form by coincidence. No one draws a smiley face on a job application form, let alone a police application form. And no one being interrogated for a serious crime by the police asks for a job application form. It's absolutely the same man, or if not, they are connected.
*the same reason why he asked for an application to become a law enforcement official.* *he's a seer. because 1) he wasn't the killer 2) the smiley face on the victim wasn't public knowledge 3) the killer's doppelganger drew a smiley face on the application he asked for, one can only conclude that the weirdo man who got down on his knees to pray was a mystic who wanted to use his skills in law enforcement to help solve crimes (and mysteries). the man had limited spiritual knowledge and vocabulary to properly articulate his gift and so he could only communicate through behavior.*

💐💐RIP Peter Addenbrooke Thomas (June 28, 1924 - April 30, 2016)(aged 91) you will truly be missed and my prayers go out to you and your family. He was a strong supporter of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and he narrated the museum's original audio tour and documentary.💐💐
Peter Thomas is one reason I feel in love with this show as a child
Peter was one of the key reasons I have my degree in biotech and, now, teach forensics. I used to stay up with our new born son and watched Forensic Files while nursing (2002) 😊.
The fact that she survived is a miracle. I'm just glad no one met a bad ending.
Rape is one of the most traumatic events that a woman, or any other person for that matter, and one that can stay with you forever!
Hopefully the scumbag perp is experiencing it on a regular basis in prison - stretching out that balloon knot.
Am on a binge watching forensic files for hours for a week! Oh my this is gruesome this lady was so so lucky !
Me too.😂
Okay so the suspect says 'I live in this complex with you' they have finger prints and they didn't go to every house and get everyone's finger prints? that makes no sense.
lazy cops
They had tunnel vision for the guy the victim fingered instead of caring about genuine guilt.
Remember the suspect didn't match that finger print....we still need to know who it belongs to
If they refused, there was nothing more they could have done unless other evidence pointed their way or their prints were somehow taken off some other disposable item without their knowledge.
@@tjmarx Yeah. The victim also had tunnel vision when she got fingered. Blind leading a blind.
To say that the police who responded to the victim's first call dropped the ball would be an understatement
Someone could break in BEFORE cops are called, minutes AFTER, or the intruder could show up minutes to MONTHS after the cops had been called and responded to the initial call! Cops are NOT intended, nor do they even pretend that their job is to PREVENT *ALL* crimes from happening. How about putting the blame where it ACTUALLY belongs -- on the CRIMINALS!! Duh... 🙄🤦♀️🤦♀️
I think they should have waited around about 30 minutes or so ..
What an amazing story of perseverance. So glad she survived.
I think he knew how bad it looked for him, and that’s why he cared so much about the real person being found.
never thought of that, it could be
Why would a random man from several miles away drive there by coincidence to knock on her door? It's pretty obvious he associated himself with the crime after it took place
DeSilva knew about the Smiley Face. DeSilva was at the crime scene. DeSilva drew a Smiley Face on the police application.
@@shawarmaboy4844 remember they said his ex-wife and daughter lived in the same trailer park so maybe he was there for something to do with them
So weird. Just confusing

The prints didn't match the first guy but he isn't the one that did it.
In February 2005, Mark was convicted of rape and multiple other charges in relation to the Maryland case and was sentenced to life in prison.
So the print on the glass didn't match anyone ? Weird... But not as weird as the man who draws smiley faces and apologize for something he didn't do.
Maybe there was two suspects, I am no longer trusting the statements of that victim and her son...who is that finger print belongs too ??
He probably thought he did. If he was a drug user, it would be easy to convince himself.
My question is how ironic that the accused drew a smiling face on the application form and the other man drew a smiling face on her back? How do you harmonize that when the 2 men didn’t know each other? Is that mere co incidence?
@@oliviaedralin1436 there’s another show that she was on with this case and she explained that the attacker claimed there was a 2nd guy outside

Or they knew each other and the first guy did knock on the door and the other guy wanted to go ahead with the crime
He had the mugshot taped to his windshield, so most likely he didn’t know the attacker
The actual attacker only knocked on the door as a ploy to see if there was a man was inside
I don’t think Doug Desilva was ever at the house
reminds me of the movie Clockwork Orange when the teenagers knock on the door of a house in the woods & say to the couple inside, my car broke down, can I use your phone to call a tow truck
Before dna the first suspect could have been found guilty of a crime he did not commit……

I must say, out of ALL the Forensic Files I’ve seen, I believe this one was the most mind blowing one. THANK God Kaye made it, she DIDN’T take the law into her hands & lived after those 9 years of terror / mind play / saw her son grow up BUT DeSilva was just a mix of wrong place, wrong time, WRONG smiley face drawing and GOOD grief, it’s great to know the sadist rapist / tentative murderer DID get caught BEFORE he did any further sickening damages... Not finding fingerprints is a whole different story than having fingerprints that don’t match. DNA doesn’t match! Accept it, it’s not the man. He might have been having blackouts and was afraid thAt he had done it. Kay may have been in shock too.
Eye witnesses testimony is the least reliable evidence there is. Particularly victim testimony. It should be completely inadmissible in court.
I think DeSilva believed that he did it without remembering. What Kay took as his confession was likely him confessing in the most honest way possible.
God was with Kay .she is one remarkable woman after all ages been thru .she could of still remember certain things .love this narrator who talks for forensic files .
@Alice Bain - re: "God was with Kay." 1. How do you know for sure? 2. God could have prevented (mr.pervert) from entering the home in the first place.
That's actually a really good theory
And if you can pardon my French, this is the biggest load of bullsh*t I’ve ever heard.

The nice thing is that where I live police seem to understand that and are respectful of my choice to open carry my blade since in theory anyway being able to see that I am armed like that a would be attacker is a little more likely to reconsider any attempt to confront me than they otherwise would
What bs!!! Guns dont save you from everything!
