NY governor just sent national guard to NY metro randomly check people bag for weapons. Not sure how they select who to check, can be viewed as discrimination, and don’t know sustainable it is. I live in LA, we have a pretty new metro, I took twice, first time I was disgusted by the human waste smell in the walkway, the second time got harassed by a stranger on the train while a police was standing a few feet from me; that was my last time riding LA public transportation. I take Shanghai metro when I visit the city and feel safe, the only complain is huge number of people rushing on and off the train, a bit hard for tourist to take time to figure out which way to go. However, not as nervous as Paris metro where I have to watch out for pick pocket or they just rob you.

I was in NYC last summer and my partner and I couldn't get over how incredibly nasty the metro was. It was appalling.NY subway: it's often unreliable, it's dirty, there's lots of confusing maintenance scheduling, it's hot, it's smelly.BUT it's also weird, entertaining, bizarre, energetic, diverse, and it runs 24hrs a day. There's tons of room for improvement and it severly lags behind cleanliness and reliability of cities in Europe and Asia, but it has more personality and (charm?). It's also almost 120 years old, whereas some of the best metro systems in China (for example) are brand spanking new. Western democracies like the US or UK are short-term profit driven. If there is no money to be made or the money could be invested better elsewhere to bring a faster or higher return it will never go into the large public transportation system.

Running such apps on smartphones don't require much battery power or CPU process and doesn't hurt the phone one bit. Listening to music requires more phone's resource, watching video on the phone is even worse.

Many people don't understand China. In fact, Chinese people also talk about democracy. However, China's democracy is different from Western countries. The core spirit of democracy in Western countries is that the people make the decision. Chinese democracy emphasizes that the people are the first, that is, the people are the most important. The so-called autocracy that has long been criticized by the West is also a responsible system. Its most important spirit is that a group of professionally trained and professional people are responsible for managing the country. This is like if you have extra money that needs to be invested. , I am convinced that you will hand over your money to professional financial managers instead of a group of clowns who know nothing. National management cannot be done by people who only know political games and slogans. In my opinion, Come on, the so-called one-person-one-vote electoral system is to leave the future of the country to the people to elect a group of clowns to lead the country to destruction. You may not agree with my opinion, but after seeing these leaders in Western countries, you may want to think about it.
The Chinese have had this people-centered idea thousands of years ago. Mencius (372 BC - 289 BC), an ancient Chinese thinker, proposed that "the people are the most important, the country is second, and the king is the least." ” ideological culture. The overall idea comes from the explanation in Section 14 of "Mencius: Chapter 2 Heart": the people come first, the country comes second, and the king comes last. This is because a country must be built by the people, and a country must be built by the people. To have a country, there must be a "king".
Without the people, the country, society, and monarch will cease to exist, so the people are the most important.
Of course, I am not saying that China’s system is perfect. I think China’s system certainly has shortcomings, but I also believe that with the wisdom of the Chinese people, it will get better and better in the future. The Chinese people have the ability to create a better system. With the future.

In recent years, I have seen China change from the blessed Hu Jintao era to Xi Jinping and Zero Covid. I know that many Chinese people are absolutely dissatisfied with the current situation; I have spoken to them every day. What a little pinky thinks is irrelevant.

You my friend are spot on. People in Asian countries that inherited the colonial systems have been lulled into a false sense of personal liberties by democracy which is a thin veil for autocracy and plutocracy. It's always the wealthy and the corrupt that manage their way into the power echelons to decide the fates of their nations. And they get away with their vile designs because they are protected by the veil of democracy.

Went back the UK last month and popped down to see a friend in London. My god, changing trains on the Tube felt like an adventure in itself. Had to drag my suitcase up and down stairs and through a labyrinth of tunnels. No lifts on a lot of platforms and no mobile data so I couldn't even check which way I should be going. And there was virtually no ventilation neither. It's actually a lot of fun and some what novel to begin with but I can't imagine doing that on everyday commute to and from work!
On the day I was leaving, there were delays on the brand new Elizabeth Line. I mean Jesus Christ! How! The historic lines, I can understand but how could there be signal fault on something that been recently built? There were no estimate to how long the delay was neither. It was a miracle I managed to catch my flight in the end.

Mate, good luck with that! I am sure it will be great fun to meet up with your mates and see the place with a fresh pair of eyes. Honestly, the architecture and landscape are actually pretty stunning and it's something I took for granted when I grew up there.
Don't overstay though. I reckon the sweet spot is less than 2 weeks. The nostalgia will overpower the annoyance at the beginning but the all the little things will start to gnaw at you, then the price of everything will bites.
I actually just took my Expat gf from Hong Kong to Shenzhen for a meal last night. It been 7 years since she last went and she was blown away by the size, cleanliness of the place. Even the way the people behaved was a shock for her. :D@@Harveyinchina

9:11 Harvey, I agree with your points about safety on the Tube - the last time that I was on the London Underground was on 25th June 2002 coming in off a flight from Dublin, from Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus and travelling alone late at night, I was absolutely terrified, as an Irish gay man - to top it all off, it was my first time in London, so I had no idea where I was going in Central London and I found the ticket station staff at Heathrow Tube incredibly aggressive and rude - the next morning, I was trying to find Euston Station for the train to Manchester and I found the station staff incredibly arrogant, aggressive and rude, having spent a night in Balan’s Coffee Shop in Soho - I got lost underneath Big Ben at the stroke of Midnight (those bells terrified the living daylights out of me) and halfway down The Mall - so I would never recommend going around London on your own, as all I had was an outdated copy of Spartacus Gay Guide with me, as I’d been trying to discover gay London

Harvey, in relation to the Chinese railways, I am most impressed - I use SailRail all the time to get from Manchester to Dublin via Chester and Holyhead and I see many ways in which the Chinese could help us to improve our railways - for years, the shelving of a high speed rail tunnel from Holyhead under the Irish Sea to Dublin has been a major issue, but since the failure of HS2, the only way that I can see this happening is if the CCP were given direct and complete control of the U.K.’s railways

Been to China myself years ago for biz. Not very impressed with the place. Cheap food. Cheap goods. Zhite rent. So I made my deal and came back. Fell for American propaganda years ago and didn't continue my sourcing contract there. The contract ended in fearking 2019, yes, that year before the lock down coming in just months. Dodged the bullet big time. Haven't been back since. Probably never. The country is ok, in my view, but there are other places that will not be as heavyhanded, and still provide clean infrastructure. So, hope you have fun there.
