    My Mini Cooper JCW GP has an Aisin 8 speed. From what I can tell so far it feels like a very stout transmission, quick strong upshifts and downshifts and it puts the power down very well. If I leave it in sport auto mode, I can be cruising in 8th gear on the highway and if I mash the throttle it downshifts to 3rd with quickness and takes off like a rocket. Or I can manually shift down with the paddles or gear selector for more involvement. After having only manual cars for the past 6 years (until the Mini) I thought automatic transmissions were bad... but I was so wrong. These transmissions are incredible.

      @gravityhammer25 - Interested in your comment. We have recently bought a UK 2023 Mini JCW (228bhp) and are very pleased with the transmission. Having been used to VW brand DSGs (with diesels) for many years in various vehicles, the Aisin has low-speed smoothness that DSG just doesn’t, and coz the Aisin has a torque converter I have no worries about slipping clutches wear or heating up in slow traffic etc. Low-speed manoeuvring is now a positive dream rather than awkward. The DSG when cold is nowhere near as good. Having said that I still like the DSG, and one remains as my “daily”.

      @@adrianlw2750 I carry the motion that Aisin 8 is sublime in both low speed cruise in traffic and when manoeuvring back and forth. The only advantage dual clutch types have over this is when entering or exiting the cruise mode the obvious mass of the torque converter initial spin compared to just a clutch engage with the dual clutch types. I love that the Aisin can kick down 4 gears at a time when wanted as well. Great part overall.

    Excellent video as usual John and of special interest to me as I have it fitted to my new Volvo XC90.
    In that application there are two special features.
    First is the Eco drive mode which has an over-run declutch feature so that it completely coasts with no engine braking on a trailing throttle. This may be a mechanical feature such as a one way clutch inside the transmission.
    The second is the Off-Road drive mode which holds first gear to high revs and includes downhill brake assist, which is accomplished by software and the ABS system as far as I can make out.
    It also has a transfer box or at least a crown wheel and pinion for transfer of drive to the rear axle on most XC90 variants and that is all variants available here in the UK. Of course the same Aisin transmission is being used in V and S90 models and 60 series also which are mostly sold as front wheel drive.
    My example is mated to the excellent 235hp 480Nm [approximately] twin turbo two litre diesel engine. The fuel economy and performance both exceed my expectations for a big 2.25 ton car. Yesterday I covered 205 miles, much of it at between 80 and 90 mph, with about 10 miles of city driving and 60 of twisty country roads and achieved 38mpg Imperial or 32 mpg US. Average speed of just over 50mph.

      Aisin transmissions hold up really well in my experience. My old Suzuki had one and it was sold something like four times and the guy that has it now is still driving it around on the same transmission. That's over 22 years later. Keeping the fluid changed regularly will do a lot to keep them running well.

    Fascinating. I owned a 2007 Lexus LS 460, and it was equipped with the same Aisin 8-speed transmission. The later IS-F probably was the same but a heavier service variant. As with most Lexus models, they are rear-wheel driven. Only the ES has the 6-spd FWD. I can't say for sure who produces that unit, but since Asin Seiki is part of the Toyota family, it's a safe bet they make it as well.

    Hello from Kerala, India. I own a front wheel drive 2014 XC60 2.0L Diesel D4 with the same Aisin 8 Speed Gearbox mentioned here. The car has run 30,000 kms. Recently a warning message showing "Coolant Low - Switch off Engine". Upon checking , I saw the coolant reservoir tank was empty and it had a brown oily kind of residue. I sent the vehicle by Flat bed to the Volvo dealer in Kochi. A couple of days later after checking, the dealer informed that the Coolant had leaked into the Gearbox via a failed cooler resulting in shift shock. They said Volvo recommends the Gearbox to be replaced! To replace a Gearbox in a car that's run only 30,000 kms sounds absurd. This is the same 8 Speed Aisin Gearbox that comes in the current Volvo XC60,XC90 and XC40.

    Have this transmission in a BMW 2er Gran Tourer LCI. Very nice driving feel with it.
    My concern: the manufacturer says it doesn't need any oil change, but users in real world say you should change the gearbox oil and filter at about 60.000 miles. Others say that after you do the oil change the problems with this gearbox begin.
    So what's your input in this matter, please?
    PS: one of my friend noticed at around 65k miles that the gears were lagging and having difficulties changing gears. After the oil change at a local garage, the gearbox was back to normal in operation.

I always prided myself in doing much of my own car maintenance but as I get older these transmission are getting more complicated not to mention the specialized tools that are needed. Are these 8 speed AISAN transmissions that go in the Toyota reliable. I know they're the next generation of the 6 speeds which have had a good track record.....wondering if the 8 speeds are just as good. Also what are your thought on transmission fluid servicing since many manufactures say life time fluid. Some say every 30,000-50,000 miles....others say follow the owners manual. To me it's like taking a bath in dirty water.

    Interesting video. Slightly off topic question. Toyota usually uses Aisin transmissions for their cars. Toyota has always had a good reputation for reliable automatics. How come the European cars that use the AW55 transmission are considered to have weak transmissions? The AW55 does not appear to be used by Toyota but it's still made by Aisin.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад +2

      Toyota typically renames the Aisin transmissions they use to a Toyota designation. I do not know if Toyota used the AW55 because I don't know what they would have called it. Aisin builds great transmissions, but they have not been without some failures. Additionally, vehicle manufacturers pick the Aisin transmission they want to use. Maybe they picked a model that was not the best pick for their vehicle for some reason (typically $$), i don't really know. Best wishes.

It was a case of "a good deed never goes unpunished". Small wonder CVT transmissions are so numerous. About 8% of the number of parts to these designed correctly. Cheap is the go-to route for new vehicles.

    John, you mentioned an extra solenoid for auto-stop engines. What does that solenoid do? Is it something to do with the restart of the engine/torque converter clutch?

    I've got a some questions, but as always your videos are very good. You touched on 3 versions to handle different torque levels, could you eleberate on the 3 versions and how much torque they are good for? I own a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT, it's FWD. Latter I would like to modify it with turbos and all that. Right now the car is fun to drive stock as it is, but gas miliage sucks even at the 222 HP stock level. Transaxle is a 4 speed OEM. Do you think I could get one of those 8 speeds to fit in my car? If so, which one is best for higher torque levels that would fit in there? Also, do you know of any 7 or 8 speed AWD transaxles that may be made to work in my car? Thanks for your time.

    Great video John, but from around 25:30 to 26:00 you're describing the front gear set with the sun held, carrier input, and ring output. How is this not producing minimum forward overdrive from this gear set?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Great observation! A single pinion planetary gear set would have an overdrive condition with the sun held and the carrier as the input, but this is a double planetary carrier gear set. It reverses the direction of the ring and slows it down. The formula is Wa=1/((Na/Ns)-1)/(Na/Ns) where Wa is the speed of the annulus gear (ring) and Na and Ns are the number of teeth on the sun and annulus gears. Na = 78, Ns = 38. I hope that helps. Have a good day!

    Very good video, thank you for that. I've still got a question, in my 2021 Citroën C4 is an Aisin 8 Speed Transmission mounted. When I am in "D" Mode, the car is not crawling very well at very slow speed with the brakes applied. But, if I switch to "M" Mode, it's very easy to let it crawl with brakes applied. What is the difference between "D" in first gear and "M" with first gear?

      Same “problem” with 2021 Peugeot 5008. I had the eat6 in my older 5008 (2018) that was perfect. This gearbox is really not suited frictie car. Also very strange noises in 5th and 7th gear at light load. The crawling in stop/start traffic drives me nuts… it looks to be the torque converter I guess..

    Technically speaking, is it possible that an overheated torque converter can damage a rear crankshaft oil seal?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад +2

      Possibly, yes. but it would have been really hot. There is a flywheel in between the torque converter and the rear main seal that would act like a heat shield.

      WeberAuto Thank you for the reply. So I would expect roughly the same complexity. And roughly the same Reliability if Honda and Ford are careful enough? Toyota is reserving that to its most expensive Lexus, while Honda is experimenting on Accord. Honda is courageous. This is definitely the high ground of technological competition.
