  • This is a follow up video from my original post on coming off of Citalopram after 16 years.
The last 5 weeks have not been easy, the withdrawal symptoms have changed and my sleep has taken a battering because of that.
Still, I’ve come too far from 20 mg to 5 weeks of zero to quit now.
Thank you for all your comments, its great reading all your own personal stories and I hope these videos help others on their journey.

I hope you are doing well, as I haven't seen many recent videos posted on your channel since this one. I'll briefly share my story, as it might help you and others. I was on some variation of antidepressants for 20 years of my life. In July 2023, I found a great therapist and began tapering off my medication. Here in the US, psychiatrists are still incorrectly advising people to taper WAY too quickly, which causes physical withdrawal symptoms that a doctor will state is a return of the original depression or anxiety 99% of the time. It isn’t. I tapered very slowly, over the course of 6 months. I could have probably tapered even slower towards the end, but I just wanted to be off the medication. I am 7 months med-free and hanging in there. I am seeing many of the side-effects experienced on the medication ceasing and I am switching to a new therapist who is closer to my home. I am SOOO thankful I tapered slowly (look up hyperbolic tapering, it is a life saver). Not every day is great, not every day is bad, but each day is an incremental step towards managing my depression and anxiety therapeutically.

    Hi, hope you are well.
This is how I tapered off citalopram.
First you drop 5% of your dosage. No more.
You crush the pill, stir it with 1 litre (or whatever) of water, remove 0,5 decilitre of the water and drink it. So there's you 5% drop. Go on 3 weeks like that. Next stir and remove 1 decilitre and go like that for three weeks. Then remove 1,5 decilitres and go like that for three weeks. Now you've dropped 15% during 9 week period.
Then you can try dropping 10%. So reduce 10% and do it for three weeks. If you feel any of those nasty symptoms go back to your previous dose for a couple of weeks and then try again. It should be easier this time. Go on until you are completely off. For me it took a year but it was quite smooth like that and worth the effort.

Hey Rich, thanks for the comment and watching the video. My thoughts are exactly that as I obviously don’t know you or your situation and I’m not medically trained but I will say with me I was in the perfect situation to try and see if I could as I wasn’t working, I did mine as levels, no rush although people have commented that I did it to fast but I let my body get used to each drop and then monitored how I felt on each lower dose and if I felt fine and coped, then I did my next taper, I think in my first video I covered it as this is the second video of three but I will say that you need to ask yourself why you want to come off it, there is a big difference between wanting to come off it and feeling that you can come off it, my anxiety flared up while tapering and if I wasn’t in a good place at that time I would of really struggled with it. I think it’s like dieting, do it slowly and small drops and you are likely to stay off it, do it fast and you are likely to go back on but if you can, it’s always best to consult a doctor.

@distractingdom I appreciate you getting back. Is your name Dom?
How have you been, as I think you made this vid quite a while ago now?
I guess everyone's case is unique.
I really struggled with PTSD around 2012. Had counselling and was eventually put on meds. I don't have much faith in doctors, and I just kinda stayed on them. Never had one review since.
In hindsight, I probably should have come off them some years ago. So what I'm doing right now is a gentle taper.
Cutting the tablets in half. So 10mg every day for a couple of weeks, and essentially, just monitor how I feel.
      Then, cut down to 5mg.
It's early days for me because I only started the taper on Monday.

    • @distractingdom
      @distractingdom  4 месяца назад +1

@@richardfisher5508 can I suggest one thing and only a suggestion, instead of cutting the tablet in half and taking that as that’s a 50% drop, take your normal 20mg then half a tablet, then 20mg, then half a tablet and tapper that way, see how you feel after a few weeks, then if all good then drop to 10mg each day and yes I am Dom. I will do an update video soon as people keep asking for one but as I’m off the meds now and the videos were about coming off them, my life isn’t exciting enough for more videos and nobody wants a channel of me just talking about my issues.

So what viruses caused to the brain? In my junior time was a struggle, now is a struggle and so on. Stress insecurity work and sleeping ((maybe I forgot other simptoms)).
I don't know the name of meds in my junior time that was given to me. So I got off suddenly at once, what is the tapering? So in my rehab from alcohol that I was living with changes happening, and got back to meds! This time in my language says my meds have been for psihotic... I became again with or without meds sick. It was good for two years, now I live with withdrawal symptoms from psychiatrist meds, that I used. Starting them with 5mg, to 10mg, and back to 5mg for little longer, all in two years cycle. I know I don't need the meds other than for pains. But like you have same felling from theirs meds that are made for clinical health problems. It's side effects that causes it. Use for long time you may risk yourself, and your family. I didn't use same meds like you. Work on myself and AA meetings helped me to what I became.

@@distractingdom that's not pathetic, and if someone else said that to you I bet you wouldn't think it's pathetic either. I actually had a mix up with the pharmacy and ran out, after a few days the withdrawal started and I didn't know what it was, I suspected it might be withdrawal so I started looking it up. I was pretty shocked with what I found out about the medication, side effects, long term damage, etc. I had looked them up 20 years ago but accessibility of information changes a lot in 20 years. I'd just accepted I'd be on tablets for a long time because I thought that was better than the alternative but it's really not. I figure if something causes withdrawal like this it can't be doing me good and it seems like there are a lot of people going through the same journey. I'd seen them like vitamins that were doing some good, but that's not what they are. So I just didn't pick up the px and here we are. Nausea is dying down now

Hey, I’m sorry to read that, I’d say which you have that if you were that bad then maybe you shouldn’t of been coming off them. Hope life has stabilised for you since returning to them.
