This is a good format for introducing major upgrades to a complex, if well-known, system. It packed a lot of information, including the accompanying B-roll footage, into a reasonable length introductory video.
If updates are done mostly to the software why won't Garmin roll out software updates to the 1030+ and 1030 users? I don't mind paying a bit for the software update to the older device. (1030 example) And if any features require the hardware capability, then that feature is simply unavailable. It is a good business model for your customers and for long time Garmin users. Instead of forcing these long-time users or those who just bought 1030+ to choose to leave Garmin. I got that you want more revenue, but there are ways you can offer (and monetize) the software updates to older Garmin devices. Besides helping the planet not to pile up electronic garbage.
This is a really great format, but maybe sit down on a park bench lol you guys made me uncomfortable just leaning on your bikes for hours. Love the chatter and discussion, very well done guys!!
Going from a 1030, other then the home page, setup for most other functions is the same as the 1030, you configure Activity Profiles the same, map screen setup is the same, etc..,, so really only a pretty new home page. IQ has changed but it was fine on the home page, now its buried in the setup screen, not sure why, it would be useful to be able to put that on the home page. Not to complain too much, it is an improved unit and is a worthwhile investment. I went this even though there are great deals on a 1030 Plus as I wanted I wanted some proofing.
IMPORTANT: The older devices (830, 1030, 1030+) will NOT receive any of these new software features / interface improvements. In my opinion this is a shit way to treat your customers who bought a 1030+ a couple of months ago and goes against the way they have handled updates in the past. Bad move Garmin
Thank you for your comment. If the top of the line previous generation product doesn't get updated when a newer model comes out, I would expect the Edge 1040 to be good only for a year or two before it too gets the same treatment. You're right that this isn't the way to treat customers and the environment.
Is Garmin doing the Honda sales equivalent they did starting in the late eighties and nineties? Believing their product was so top tier that the name itself was enough to solidify sales. Eventually other manufacturers came on board which actually helped the monopoly they had and increased the values to a larger extent. Now, no longer does Honda reserve this prestige as many others have taken their bite of market share. Things come and go however, when there isn't continuing support for older products, folks are getting wise to the underwriting of newer products that do not seem to have any shelf life. If they were tossing these products out there for half or less than what they are getting for them now, then folks might not be so reluctant in purchasing more, aka, market share. Eventually sales drops. There will always be the newbie crowds who have more or less no idea how this affects them, but to the ones who are hard-core, care about how far their dollar goes, the mistrust of product longevity becomes an issue. Had a bit of a sight alignment with how each representative's bike was set up. Handle bar height, seat height, etc. Didn't quite seem realistic. I am like many, entrusted with some sense of forgiveness into the new age of technology. We all like convenience, in so far as thinking it'll help with something but, nowadays just because there's a 7-eleven on every corner does not mean they'll have what you want also. My thoughts would be, too much expense for so little return. That being the longevity of said product. Like my samsung chromebook. There are updates for at least a few years before they tell you it cannot accept anymore updates due to technology in the software and hardware. That's acceptable. One knows at least the length of time one has. As this applies to Garmin, cannot say. Here I have a very, very usable notebook, not overly complicated, and folks at a price that is more than reasonable given its longevity. I doubt comments will change the pricing policy just to bring in more folks or counter their marketing strategy anytime soon. The turnover of old to new customers outweighs doing so. R & D should take on a newer enclave. Research.....Development........Marketing.......Production.......Longevity......
I'm convinced that guy Russ hasn't got a lot of programming experience or knowledge because the nonsense updates and constant screw ups with the 1040 are out of this world. It takes a special programmer to screw something up and then completely ignore their mistakes despite being told time and time again update after update. Garmin went from being absolutely top of the game to being the worst of the worst with their updates. I've been using only garmin religiously for 15yrs and never any issues until getting the 1040 series, now I'm regretting it and very close to being done with garmin
@@TrickyTree84 I was a little reluctant to invest such amount in a device and be disappointed, but knowing that you are satisfied with it helps me a lot. I saw the 840 has a feature to choose how many miles you want and the device design by itself a track around your location. I don't find that information anywhere about the 1040, can you please confirm if the 1040 also has it?

Every company in the world does this. New features could be hardware dependent and going backwards would cause angry customers too
Wake up early this morning to buy one. Estimated shipping 5-8 weeks. Gotta love it.

Brilliant vid, just got mine today, excellent idea to have auto rerouting if you go off course
Got mine, excellent device, love it!!
Not offering the new OS to 1030+ owners is unforgivable. I look forward to the update of the Wahoo Roam for my next device.

Can we expect 540 and 840 still in 2022?
what about gradient % issue/feature..
Can you “reverse course” on this device now, where you ride a course on it backwards?
Thumbs down to Garmin employees patting themselves on the back. "it rocks" "it's the ultimate" "super awesome" "I'm blown away" What a load of crap.
Garmin was dragged kicking and crying to utilize USB-C, which shoulda been years ago. Wonder how long it'll take to add WiFi.

Is it better now with the firmware updates or still s*it?

@@Bikes_and_Hacks to add, the issues I had initially were with connect iq data fields which I use. It was fixed quite quickly

Did not find this helpful. Not a fan of the chat format and adjective loaded discussion. Amazing, super awesome ….. please😒
