Tia, I checked the user guide for this camera and the G7X does not have an external microphone input. You would not be able to use the Rode WG2 with this camera. You can record the audio separately and mix it in later in post production but this is more work. Hope this helps Tia.
The safety channel doesn't record 2 separate tracks. It sends the stereo track to the camera or recorder and one channel will be 20db lower, which then gets separated in post. As usual, Rode didn't explain this. It would have been more practical to have 2 recordings on the transmitter to choose from but they didn't think of that.
Hi. Very informative video. Can you possibly explain after I've exported an audio file and cleaned it up in post production, how do I integrate it back into my video so it replaces the old audio file?
Yeah WoW Garry great Video, and yep, coz of this one. I love our GOii's BUT.... I wanted to record so abience at a shoot at a couple of the waterfalls and both mics turned on, with Lavs connected thinking they would record to themselves without being connected to the receiver. They are (all) on the latest firmware and set to "Always" but they (both) failed to record! perhaps they need to be connected to the receiver (seems ODD)...testing needed...Thanks for your videos, I'll start looking at more of your content.
Peter that is weird. Sorry to hear you have had trouble with yours. You may find a dedicated recorder like the zoom H1 pro would be a good investment for tasks like that. Much more versatile and good visual Monitoring ability.
Great video! I can tell you're using the Rode vlogger kit. Do you know if it's possible to use the WG2 with a different tripod and grid? In my case, it unnecessary to buy a kit that brings a led and a mic. Thanks a million.
The wireless go 2 can be mounted on any mobile clamp with a cold shoe mount on to or the side. Even the clamps that don’t have a cold shoe mount you can strap it on with Velcro.
Thank you so much for this review Gary. It was a really great detailed, thorough review with lots of knowledge and tips. I do have a question, when i use the merged mode for some reason the left channel is slightly louder than the right channel? Is that normal or is their some way I can fix that, Id really appreciate it if I could get some help? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thanks for your feedback. I wonder if you have the safety track function switched on. When in merged mode you can select safety track which lowers the sensitivity of one of the channels. Hope that helps.
Thanks a lot for this excellent video. My question is how can I uptimise the sound to stereo, using only one transmiter. Shouls I use the split mode or merge. Any other typs would help.
Hello Gary, I like this in-depth video! Here is a serious question before potential purchase: in a live interview session if I give person A and B each one transmitter, and use the live monitoring signal from 3.5mm output of the receiver as stereo audio track, then in the live stream will I hear A on the left B on the right (which is quite painful), or will I hear both person mixed to the central position, each person's voice being duplicated to left and right channel?
Yes Reno Yeh, you can setup the system to work like that. You can also set it up to separate each microphone and send to left and right. Mono mode is the blended setting.
Sorry for the late reply, just check that you have the very latest version if the ride central app. Open the ride central app. Make sure devices are turned on before you connect them. Hook them up and you should be fine.
Hi first thing you made a great video i use my microphone the receiver directly connected to my gh4 camera with the audio cable but it has a huming sound like a electrical induction I tried many cables and many things and I cannot get rid of it the only thing that works is a piece of tape to push the cable hard that's sometimes gets the job done do you why is that happening thanks for the video it was great
Sorry to hear that gos2011, it sounds to me like you may have a issue with the mic input on your camera. A way to check it is to plug your wireless mic into another recorder or camera and see if you get the same buzz. If there is no buzz then it just may be the input on your camera.
Gos2011, I just thought of something else. 2.4GHz wireless mics have a lot of electrical interference around them. The receiver is not only receiving signal but also communicating with the transmitter. It could be that the camera is not shielding this out. Just a thought. You can test this by bringing the receiver close to the camera and then stretching the lead out and getting it away from the camera. Hope you find a solution.
Thanks Gary for a very informative video! Just wanted to ask if I can delete the audio files that are already stored in each transmitter, as I couldn't do so in Rode Central application?

Hey Gary. Great video. I bought the Rode Wireless Go II and the iphone cable hack based on your suggestion. When I was recording using my iphone, I noticed that the gain is high and create some noises. I read that actually the gain setting does not work if you connect via a USB cable, which is what I'm using. I noticed that you are using an iphone in this video. How do you get around that problem? Thank you in advance!
I haven’t had a problem with overdriving. The transmitters have a function now that you can reduce the input gain on the microphone where needed. You just need to make sure you have the latest firmware installed for Rode Central. Then select the pad for microphone sensitivity. Hope that helps. Love your channels, congrats on the silver play buttons. 2, amazing.
@@GaryDmedia Hi Gary! Thank you so much for getting back to me. I do see that function. However, based on the Rode's website, it seems like the gain setting does not work if you use the USB C to connect. Also, i noticed that there's a slight difference in the audio quality of the one recorded in the iPhone vs on the Rode TX, which is very odd. The iPhone track has some artifacts. I currently set the gain as -15. Anyway, thank you. You have a great channel and I'm looking forward to seeing you reaching that milestone! Feel free to reach out if you need any help.
I will have another look at those references you mentioned to try and understand it a bit more. The recording on the TX will be a bit better cause it have to be fed through so much processing including Mr iPhone. Thanks for your kind offer of assistance, very kind. Stay safe.
hello and thank you very much for this very well done and super detailed video. a small question?? how can we export multiple tx files? I have the impression that they should be exported 1 by 1. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Good morning Gary, thanks for this great video on how to set up the mics, but I'm having problems finding the new updated version, is it possible you could send me a link to the new 1.6 version? Many thanks, Billy.
I just used the link on the site: www.rode.com/microphones/wireless/wirelessgoii#module_8 What I found was the Rode Central app version did not change but when I connected the transmitter and receiver their firmware was updated.
@@GaryDmedia Thanks Gary, now that makes sense from what I could see on the screen, it was a 1.6 i downloaded but it came up 1.1 and I didn't want to plug things in and alter things I know nothing about, I will try what you recommend with fingers crossed, thank you so much for your help with this, Billyh
@@GaryDmedia Good evening Gary, It's all good news thanks to your advice, I plugged in the receiver 1st and then the transmitters and they immediately started the upgrade to 1.6.0. Thank you for all your halp and sharing your Invaluable information with us all, your a star. All the best Billy.
Gary, there is a way to read again the audio files inside the Rode App one time you delate it?, for example save the original file in the compute and then bring again inside of devoice ?
Great review! Have you had issues with the audio clipping even with the turned down to -30? That seems to be the lowest it goes and it still clips. Thanks!
Hi Ryan. More than likely it's clipping at the transmitter end. If so, a Pad attenuator between the mic and transmitter will probably resolve the issue.
The wireless go II is known for low sensitivity. Even so the recording is almost without any background noise so you can lift the gain in editing with confidence that it will be a clear recording.
Thanks for the video. I have a set myself. I was wondering what DB recording level the transmitters are on themselves? For example, I turn a transmitter on and have it record a speaker at a wedding with a Rode lapel mic. Does it have a default bit / DB recording level? Or does it reflect the receivers setting (which can change), even though in this example is it still turned off? Thanks in advance. In short, can I strap a lapel microphone to a speaker at a wedding and have it recording cleanly with out clipping? Thanks in advance.
Tag Happy, in the WG2 settings be sure to adjust the TX so that it has full gain. That is, don’t switch on the PAD. Even at full input gain you would have to yell into it or sing very loudly to distort the input. Adjustment of the RX gain only adjusts the output going to the camera.
Thanks for the tutorial mate! Question I have is my transmitters are not recording internal audio for some reason. I have them set to always record but when I plug them into the Rode Central app it says no audio recordings available. Any idea whats going on? Potential bug?
The first thing I would do is download the latest firmware and update both the receiver and transmitters. If there was a hardware fault it would only be with one transmitter I would think.
The recording in merged setting records to a single mono file. That is, 2 channels, left and right with the same mixed recording. In stereo, you will get a single stereo file with one mic recorded to the left channel and the other to the right channel. Hope that helps.
Great video but please i need help. How do I delete recorded audio files from the devices? Rode help says hit the delete key on the keyboard but it does nothing. It's driving me crazy. What am I missing? Thanks in advance!
Just checking if you have the very latest firmware update for your equipment. Rode has updated the Rode Central App. Much more features available for moving, deleting files etc.
The transmitter needs to be set to Hi unless the interviewee has a strong voice. The receiver needs to be set to Hi and the DSLR audio input set low. Hope that helps.
I don't get the purpose of the pad function. Is it a kind of automatic gain control, something I would not like tu use for audio? Then the pad function and the gain control (fine or coarse) work together? Usually I record to an iPhone through the audio monitor of an Zoom H5 - it is true clipping on the Rode side must be omitted by all means. It is easy to control clipping on the Zoom H5 but I am not sure what is best practice on the Rode setup. You taught me how to use the Zoom H5.
Excellent guide Davies, thanks a lot!!! It is possible to lock/unlock the mute button? In my new rode go 2 It doesn't work at the receiver, and also can't activate the merged record pressing the 2 buttons at the same time (I can only activate this on the app rode central).
Do u need an iPhone or computer to turn recording from “always” to “off” or is there something u can press on the receiver directly? And is there a way to know if the device is recording while the transmitter is off?
When the transmitter is switched to always on, you have to use an app to access the function switch. No physical switch will do it. The always on recording stops when the transmitter is completely switched off. There is no indication other than the screen going blank.
Garry can you have one receiver in one position eg one side of a worship church and the another taking audio from the mixer using cables like in your videos
Jeff, I did find the same. I used the FilMic Pro app to record as you can see in the video. I did have to boost about 12dB in post. The low level could simply be a mic proximity problem with it clipped to my shirt.
@@GaryDmedia Thanks so much for your response! I found the same - I needed about 12db boost. I haven't seen others mention this problem. I usually have good lav mic placement, so that shouldn't be the problem. The only factor I wasn't sure about is the power level required for different mics. I use a Sennheiser lav mic, and I was wondering of the Rode lav works at a different power level? Thank you again for your response and great videos!
Good thought Jeff, I will do some personal tests myself. I have both the standard and broadcast Rode lav mics. I will try them both, but I suspect they will be a similar result as the onboard mic. Thanks for your comments.
@@GaryDmedia i reached out to rode and this was their response: "At this time, there is no function available to boost the internal recording in the TX units. In the video, my colleague, Ryan, mentioned that our developers are in the process of adding Audio Post Processing opportunities. Hi Gary, Great Video. I use the Go 2 for weddings and have found the maximum recording time is around 33min per file. It doesn't stop recording but splits the file. is there a way to increase the file size it will produce?
V, no not that I know at the moment. It is definitely something that could be adjusted in future firmware updates. You can I guess manipulate the file length by switching the transmitter off and then back on again. That’s about it. Sorry.
I do think having two transmitters with Lav mics is hard to beat. Especially the WG2 as it records a safe recording on the device. If you split the channels to your camera you can mix and blend them in your editing software. Hope that helps.
Yes definitely Anyway Highway. You can use a single transmitter to record its own audio without anything else, use a single transmitter with the receiver and still have it feed both left and right channels in blended mono mode. Or use both transmitters with receiver.
The app I use is FilMic Pro. It works on iPhone and Android phones. You have to pay for it but I just like to options you have for video and audio. Hope that helps.
What I can't find (in a mac environment) is how to delete the old entries. While I store them on my computer, I want to free up storage space on the rode transmitters and I can't find such an option.

@@GaryDmedia thanks 4 the research and the reply!
GREAT Explanation! Thank you!
Glad the video was helpful, thanks for the feedback.
Please share the link for the cool small black 4 port usb charger.
It is simply a 1 in/ 4 out USB hub. Nothing special. Just plugged it into a high output power supply like the one that came with my iPhone.
OMG THANK THE LORD 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Seriously!😂
The safety channel doesn't record 2 separate tracks. It sends the stereo track to the camera or recorder and one channel will be 20db lower, which then gets separated in post.
As usual, Rode didn't explain this. It would have been more practical to have 2 recordings on the transmitter to choose from but they didn't think of that.
Thanks for clarifying that dugsbugs1. I appreciate it.
What a detailed review. Thanks
Thanks for your feedback Cloud Films. 👍
Thanks @@GaryDmedia I have the Hn4 but it's not in the every day carry kit...it will be when we return to finish the shoot.
Awesome. Sounds like you got it all sorted. Thanks Peter for dropping in to say G'day.
Great Tutorial! Thank you...
Glad it was helpful Sophie, thanks for letting me know.
Thank you so much!!!! So helpful!
Glad the video was helpful.
Thank you so much sir for your packaged information
Thanks, Gary. This is great.
I appreciate your feedback Nadine. Thanks.
Thanks for this Gary (im very new to audio) ive got 3 different cables to connect to my i-phone WTF i will get the SC 15 cheers
So many cables! HaHa.
@@GaryDmedia YES! That was the problem, thank you soo much now they are both equal. Thank you Gary!!
Great you got a solution. Hope your video project goes well.
@@GaryDmedia Thanks Gary!
Hi! Love the video! RODE Central will not recognize my devices. Any suggestions?
Fadi, at this stage you can only use the Rode Central app to globally delete all files. I imagine future updates may give us more control.
@@GaryDmedia where on the app do you delete them? I don't see that option. Thank you for the wonderful video by the way
@@picsbypixrephotography4696 It's hidden away in a very unintuitive place. Click the cog icon under TX Firmware v... Then on the right, next to where it says 7+ hours remaining, click the tiny red Trash icon
Stay safe.
@@GaryDmedia Sounds good!
hello and thank you very much for this very well done and super detailed video. a small question?? how can we export multiple tx files? I have the impression that they should be exported 1 by 1. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Tristan, that feature I imagine is coming soon along with a mobile app to adjust settings. At present you can only copy files individually.
This is very enlightening :)
Thanks for letting me know. 👍
Good morning Gary, thanks for this great video on how to set up the mics, but I'm having problems finding the new updated version, is it possible you could send me a link to the new 1.6 version? Many thanks,
Billy.
I just used the link on the site: www.rode.com/microphones/wireless/wirelessgoii#module_8
What I found was the Rode Central app version did not change but when I connected the transmitter and receiver their firmware was updated.
@@GaryDmedia Thanks Gary, now that makes sense from what I could see on the screen, it was a 1.6 i downloaded but it came up 1.1 and I didn't want to plug things in and alter things I know nothing about, I will try what you recommend with fingers crossed, thank you so much for your help with this,

No worries Billy, glad I was of help.
Gary, there is a way to read again the audio files inside the Rode App one time you delate it?, for example save the original file in the compute and then bring again inside of devoice ?
I will check it out Tommaso. I’m not too familiar with the new Rode companion app yet. Thanks for the tip.
Great review! Have you had issues with the audio clipping even with the turned down to -30? That seems to be the lowest it goes and it still clips. Thanks!
Ryan you will need to lower the input level on your camera as well. This may help.
Hi Ryan. More than likely it's clipping at the transmitter end. If so, a Pad attenuator between the mic and transmitter will probably resolve the issue.
Hi there! Can you please help me. When I listen to my backup files they appear to be in a very low volume. Do you have any idea what's going on?
The wireless go II is known for low sensitivity. Even so the recording is almost without any background noise so you can lift the gain in editing with confidence that it will be a clear recording.
What does the off setting mean as opposed to always and backup?
Hi Gary! Thanks for this great video!. I have question, do you know how to export multiples files from the Rode app? Thanks!
Have you increased the audio levels in the post production to make it loud i.e at normal levels?
Yes, in post Sanjeev. WG2 has low background hiss so it is very versatile.
if I use the backup in the app, each microphone saves what it recorded individually, or it records both on a single track??
The recording in merged setting records to a single mono file. That is, 2 channels, left and right with the same mixed recording.
In stereo, you will get a single stereo file with one mic recorded to the left channel and the other to the right channel. Hope that helps.
You're a hero mate
Thank you, very good tutorial... :-)
I appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
@@GaryDmedia hey thanks for the reply. Yes I have updated to the latest FW. It seems there is a bug in it because it is impossible to delete files
what is the best setting for an interview?
The transmitter needs to be set to Hi unless the interviewee has a strong voice. The receiver needs to be set to Hi and the DSLR audio input set low. Hope that helps.
Good information
Thanks, I appreciate you letting me know.
@@GaryDmedia I brought go 2
Good choice, keep your eyes open for future firmware updates for the Go 2. I think they will make the setup even better.
@@GaryDmedia tanx.how to update firmware
I don't get the purpose of the pad function. Is it a kind of automatic gain control, something I would not like tu use for audio? Then the pad function and the gain control (fine or coarse) work together? Usually I record to an iPhone through the audio monitor of an Zoom H5 - it is true clipping on the Rode side must be omitted by all means. It is easy to control clipping on the Zoom H5 but I am not sure what is best practice on the Rode setup. You taught me how to use the Zoom H5.
Can you record with the transmitter without turning on the receiver?
Yes definitely Renata and Luis. No with the latest firmware update.
Great video. I was wondering if the transmitter's memory is full, what will happen ? Will it automatically delete the oldest audio file ? thanks
Yes that is correct. Oldest first.
@@GaryDmedia thank you ~
And you mention the turn on receiver recording bug , is it fix now ? Would you still suggest using always on mode ? Thank you
The recording bug is fixed now but I definitely would suggest leaving it active all the time and only rely on internal recording as a backup.
@@GaryDmedia okok thank you sooo mcuh
Great Video!. I'm still struggling to locate the safety channels (-20db audio) can you
assist with that?
Garry can you have one receiver in one position eg one side of a worship church and the another taking audio from the mixer using cables like in your videos
Great video!
I have found the recorded volume to be a little low when I download it. Do you know if there is a way to change record levels?
Thanks!
@@GaryDmedia i reached out to rode and this was their response:
"At this time, there is no function available to boost the internal recording in the TX units.
In the video, my colleague, Ryan, mentioned that our developers are in the process of adding Audio Post Processing opportunities. This may include the Levels Boost that you are looking for in the recording.
I'll take this up to our dev team for discussion."
So it looks like we are stuck boosting in post for now. Thanks again so much for the response!
Wonderful Jeff. Really happy you shared that correspondence with us. Rode really do try hard to respond to costumer needs.
Can you record audio with only the receiver?
No sorry about that. The transmitters record to their internal memory. To record from the receiver it has to be connected to a recorder.

Sorry.
Hi Gary, i do food reviews. what is the best set up for two ppl.
I do think having two transmitters with Lav mics is hard to beat. Especially the WG2 as it records a safe recording on the device. If you split the channels to your camera you can mix and blend them in your editing software. Hope that helps.
@@GaryDmedia Thanks Gary
I will do a few tests. It's new to me. Thanks for quick response.
Can i use only one transmitter while the other transmitter is off?
Yes definitely Anyway Highway. You can use a single transmitter to record its own audio without anything else, use a single transmitter with the receiver and still have it feed both left and right channels in blended mono mode. Or use both transmitters with receiver.
That's great! A big help!
Thanks for answering bro.. 😊
