    The Fm7 chord is functioning well because it comes from C minor harmony and contains the notes Ab. Bb. and Eb. Together with the note F it is very close to a G7(b9, #9, b13) without the third. Great idea, and thanks a lot for the material Peter.

    Nice! Now I see the B7 as an inversion of the G7 chord - same chord tones, just emphasizing the B-natural, or 3rd of the V-chord. The Fmin sub’ also has the same notes of the Eb triad shared by the G7 (#9b13) and the inverted V-chord: B7(#9). With the F on the bottom - along with the strong C presence, it feels kind of double-sus’, almost anti-dominant, but it still functions. Wild.

    Hi Peter great sounds but in your illustrations the (1) chord is major. Do you have some similar creativity to share if the target (1) is minor? This would be helpful to know with a secondary dominant move in mind....

    Lovely! What's the theory behind the Fm11 to the Cmaj7?

    • @TheBassMan533
      @TheBassMan533 7 лет назад +7

      Whilst being in the key of C major, an Fm11 is basically a 4th degree in the key of C minor.
      Borrowing and mixing chords from the parallel minor and major keys of the tonic is a great thing to do! Give it a try.

    • @mdmellis
      @mdmellis 7 лет назад +10

      Except for the bass note, Fm11 is very similar in sound to a G7b9sus chord. By changing the Ab melodic minor scale (which is equivalent to the G altered scale) to an Ab major scale (only one note different: B becomes C) you get the altered notes plus the suspended note. Pretty hip. Ab major's relative minor is F, so F minor=Ab major.

    • @enricolongo242

      Fm11 sounds pretty like Gsus4b9#5

    • @crono303
      @crono303 7 лет назад +6

      People like to complicate these things, but it's basically a minor iv to I progression. Bach used the minor four chord a lot, too, "borrowing" notes from the parallel minor scale (c minor in this case). By beefing up the minor four with some 9s, 11s, etc, the progression sounds darker and jazzier.

    • @jeff7775
      @jeff7775 7 лет назад +6

      It's the everlasting beauty of the Minor 4rth functioning in a major key (be it voiced with tensions like here - 'Fmin 11th' - or not). From Bach to Radiohead, it just works!

    Sorry to be so theoretic but I just wondered what you mean by 'some kind of Db dominant' in the tritone substitution. By analyzing the line you play, it's a Lydian Dominant scale with #4 (or #11), written Db+4 or Db+11, the 4th mode of melodic minor, which goes Db Eb F G Ab Bb Cb Db (WWWHWHW). Sounds great!

      Whatever you feel works with the chord that builds suspense to then release when you hit that C, really

    • @TheBassMan533
      @TheBassMan533 7 лет назад +10

      There are a lot of options regarding 'what to play over' these chords, depending on your taste, style of music, the color you want to achieve and so forth.
      A simplified way to go about thinking what modes to use over these chords would be:
      1) Dominant tritone sub - Lydian b7 is widely used over a tritone sub, you can also use just any other mode or lick for a dominant chord
      2) The B7#9b13 - An altered scale would be great, but again, any other dominant concept would work...
      3) The Fm11 - A Dorian sound would work great, so will just going between C major to a C minor over this chord would work great.
      Hope that helps you start somewhere.
