Also he was almost always the top guy, or just about, in the first half of the 100 meters, when Bolt would beat him it was always at least at the halfway point or further, ...when that stride in relation to his 6'5" height, kicked in. Almost like the Derrick Henry of sprinters with Justin being almost like a Jamal Charles, (coincidentally also a former track sprinter that could run in the high 4.2's - low 4.3's at over 200 lbs)
I’ve been blessed to run with pro track athletes while being the slowest guy on a collegiate track team. I was a fast football player but a 4.4 40 would not compete in collegiate track, let alone pro!! They gave us 10 meters on a marginal pro and he was next to us at 30 to 40 meters depending on our levels. Of course he caught me at 30 meters😂😂😂
Also not to mention a HUGE factor which is in the combine the clock starts when the athlete moves. In track the athletes have to react to the gun adding at least .1-.2 sec. When Bolt ran his 4.22 in basically sweats and boat shoes he also had to react to someone yelling "GO!" If he did it the combine way in his prime with cleats, no doubt he'd easily be under 4
It takes a lot to convince a primary football fan that sub 4 isn’t impossible, “4.4 40” is the top term because you gotta pair that speed with being 200+ lbs. The guys running 4.1’s and under are usually smaller and do track exclusively
Just like track speed doesn’t transfer to football speed, a sprinter like Justin Gatlin who has one of the greatest starts ever makes a 3.9 very believable. 90% of the 40 is the first 10. Gatlin would be accelerating at 40 when most would be maintaining at best.
Anybody remember when DK Metcalf ran that 100m race and went 10.46? At the combine he went 4.33. Gatlin runs a 9.74 which is substantially faster. If you've ever run track you know that a .7 sec difference is like a mile. Gatlin is also a great starter and even deadlier in shorter sprints. I believe his 3.9 absolutely.

At the combine he wasn't training for track specifically and he was heavier so I'd imagine he was probably in like 10.7 shape and STILL ran a 4.31. Gatlin's 100m PR is 9.74 so he's a full second faster than a guy who ran a 4.31... long story short, his story is absolutely believable
