    I only shoot my videos with Komodo, when it comes to mirrorless no matter if its R5c OR a7siii or FX 1-9 just look videoish and I've owned them all. I want my video to pop out, to truly have that 24fps movement and cinematic look with color depth that you can't even get via luts or post adjustment with other cameras. I am shooting a documentary right now myself and i refuse to use any other camera except RED K. When you go Raw R3D, you don't go back. You can see the a clear difference between 10bit mirrorless and raw, now if I had all the budget in the world I'd get Arri mimi LF, but red is right there. Even low light is great because you can use neat video plug to clears all the noise.

    I’m retired (not from the movie/video production business) and have been playing around with analog/digital image capture (starting with the “standard 8 mm”/“Regular 8” cine gauge) since the mid-1970s. Whilst I know the Red Komodo seems a very expensive purchase (when “quite useable” footage can be shot even with some smartphones), it’s the only camera that has “re-awakened” the feeling of excitement I experienced in younger days in capturing moving images. It’s not sharpness but those 16 bits of colour information that “does for it me” - I’m shooting a documentary, the subject matter of which benefits from top notch picture quality - I respect anyone’s endeavours (as long they’re serious about their craft) irrespective of the camera they use - one thing to note - for those tempted to go down the route of the Red Komodo - is that the Red Raw files are very large and a pretty recent computer with the addition of sizeable external storage space is - I would say - more or less a necessity.

    Congrats to the Komodo man, good choice! I am also owning one since January and I am fully happy with it. However it is important to mention that there one thing that will be baked into the R3D. It is wise to choice your ISO correctly in your camera since there will be a slight quality difference when choosing ISO 640 for instance correctly within your camera or selecting 1600 within sour camera and changing it to 640 in post. It will affect your shadow noise quality or highlight preservation quality. And also keep in mind that the ISO works a bit backwards in RED cameras, since it will shift the dynamic range stops below and above middle gray. So lower ISO in low-light conditions and higher ISO settings in brighter conditions will be the key for correct exposure. Just in case you didn‘t know 😉

      Thanks for watching and the comment!! Yes, I’ve seen quite a bit on this. From my understanding it’s somewhat similar to Cine EI on the Sony cameras in this way - that the ISO isn’t necessarily baked in (there isn’t a different log curve for each iso value that remaps the dynamic range) but rather that your ISO will impact your exposure and where you place that dynamic range in the scene. Definitely an important thing to keep in mind! 😀

    Love it! I'm a documentary filmmaker too and bought my Komodo a few days ago. It's good to know that other filmmakers have similar thoughts about it. Some people told me that it's not a good camera for documentary filmmaking, but it's not true. :)

      @@SuperFilmregisseur You'd have to prove that point to me, because I don't buy it. Really shaky handheld footage will look like trash, and one looking less trashy is not a resounding endorsement.

      @SuperFilmregisseur Год назад

      @@JonPais take the first hunger games for example. That movie was riddled to shaky cam footage ranging from very mild but present, to extreme during the actual arena countdown scene. In the first scenes in district 12, the shaky cam has a gorgeous effect to portray the harshness of the environment, it looks solid done global, if it were done with rolling shutter so much of the magic wouldn't be captured

    For me im stuck between Sony FX6, Bmpc4k pocket, or RED komodo.. n this all my money so i gotta make the most profitable choice for my business.. rn its crazy cuz the fx6 winning

    • @RileyEndicott
      @RileyEndicott  Год назад

      I think it should come down to the types of projects you’ll be doing. The camera is ultimately a tool so which ever helps you work more effectively and solves creative problems is the one that will be the most profitable! Good luck!

    • @philippscheithauer
      @philippscheithauer Год назад

      simple answer for you: if you are more of a solo shooter where speed is of the essence, then go with the FX6. If you work with crews most of the time and have a bit more time per shot, go with RED. FX6 is way more forgiving with boot up, no black shading, poor lighting conditions, codecs that take less space with backup recording (no DIT) etc.!That is generally how it goes and you can push a great image out of the FX6 if you go with the right lenses (spoiler: not Sonys). You'll loose autofocus, but that wasn't a point to begin with if image quality is a very high concern.

      I’m not concerned about that. Jared Land has already stated it’s not a replacement for the OG Komodo and will likely be priced in the 10-12k range. Definitely out of my price range at the moment 🙂

      I don’t think so. The Komodo x will likely be 10-12k. I think that would have priced me out for some small (but important) upgrades. The original Komodo is still an amazing camera.
