I cried at this episode so much because I know what it’s like to lose a Family member who was mean and neglected you. I relate to Claire. She had to hear out all those stories Mitch had about his amazing time with Mom while she had the worst experiences. I love how this show acknowledges stuff like this

Eh not really if you aren’t as close to your dad as the other person I don’t see how it’d affect you much. Some people are emotional but for the most part people aren’t that affected.

Yeah, same. It's the contradiction between basic human decency vs what you deserve. If she was a stranger I would say she deserves a proper burial by her loved ones at least, as viewer I'm just glad I don't have to make choice because she's their mother and the only one they had until Gloria and having Gloria probably made their mother issues improve, but there's still love for a toxic parent that just doesn't disappear. And death just closes off that path to fixing it, it doesn't erase it, so you can always stand at that gate seeing what could've been not knowing how impossible improving your relationship actually was because you're looking at a post-mortem dream. And I think that's what they're feeling. The lost fictitious path. But she was awful, she laughed when Gloria got pregnant thinking Jay would have a harder life. Not realizing having children isn't bad but having children with people that didn't want to be together would make life miserable.
DeDe always treated him better than she did Claire, and I think he latched onto her because he at least felt like he got the acceptance from her that he never got from Jay.
Remember when ABC did a campaign for this episode making it sound like a main character was going to die, and then when everyone found out it was just Dede, the world collectively said, WTF, that's all?
And nothing of value was lost. In all seriousness, they aren’t mourning the woman who died cause she was awful and deserves to be alone but they are mourning the possibility of a better relationship with her. And that is fine. It means they have not given up on the slight chance she might be a better person.

i love how phil looked shocked and hurt by the news of dede's death. she was a great mother in law, mother and grandmother to them. dede had a great relationship with phil and loved and respected him so much, even though she didn't seem to like him which was not true. it really shows how much he's going to miss her.

This really hit me hard. My mother died on Oct. 28th and her funeral was Oct.31 Halloween. 33 yrs and Halloween is still a hard day for me. BTW I'm gay and Halloween was one of my favorite holidays. It took several yrs before I could celebrate it.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I had a really hard time when my dad died suddenly in 2015. I had a therapist who told me to do something fun or relaxing on the anniversary of my dad's death. It actually helps a bit.
my one problem with this episode is when Cam says 'I LOVED her' and he wasn't used to saying it in the past tense. To me, I still love my dad even tho he died a couple years ago, and even when talking about him, I still say 'i love him', not 'i LOVED him'. And they were literally laughing a couple seconds before the Scientology joke. it’s almost like they wanted to snap. although I don’t hate it as much as the way Luke treats feel sometimes like not wanting him to go to college to teach,Getting jealous of his relationship with and they even know Luke didn’t want him to be around as soon as he hangs around with auntie he gets incredibly jealous and Gloria Getting Claire to do jobs around the house because she’s too lazy to lift a finger
