I think it's super problematic for law firms which earn big bucks to hire unpaid interns. Not many people can afford to stay in metro cities for months at an end and then do well in such internships. It's a very insensitive for firms to expect college students to fund their own internships.
It also creates a huge divide between the rich and poor students in college. The students who have financial means are able to pursue big time internships, one after another. This then will help them land a job on day zero. I understand internships are meant to give students an idea of what the job will look like but to justify the non-payment as "we are giving you an experience and hence you shouldn't ask for a pay" is just super problematic.
