As with so many carnage videos it looks clearly like a case of a group in over their heads. Best way to stay out of trouble? Paddle within your (honest) ability level

Back in the day I had a VHS tape of some Germans? running Class V steeps in Corsica w/o being able to roll AT ALL. This is a lighter version of that.

The guy in the red boat gave up wayyyy too easy. One more roll and he was up.
The other guy needs to learn to boof holes, but good self rescue out of the eddy. Too passive when swimming. Fun vids to watch. Glad it all went well for the swimmers. The limpet death grip at the end was hilarious.

first guy in the group is should be the second most experienced paddler
the most experienced paddler should be the last guy in the group
thats how you dont end up with newbs stuck in holes/pinned under rocks no one knows where they got lost
its good that you posted it, we all make mistakes on our kayaking journey, and some carnage is inevitable :)

Jay Kudlesky what would you do in his situation

    • @voster77hh

@@moritzkluge851 That's a WW V no swim section. There is nothing you can do for people not having a a bomb proof WW roll under stress.
People who don't roll in foamy wild water should not enter that section at all. That is in the guidebook text.
The walls are 15 m of 70° plus and mostly unscalable w/o climbing gear. So you have to get out by the wet way all the remaining distance on losing a boat.
The road on the left bank is lostly inaccessible due to being blasted in the gorge wall. The right bank could eventually have some goat path but that rope bridge is a ruin. Other crossings are 10 km up or down - not sure. The dam is way down. Not certain what usable options exist above.
This is just the start of the epic - not the end. The 2 guys are totally panicked.
The uninhabited gorge is 20 km long. Mobile network largely unavailable Any emergency service is way out of reach.
I know someone who punched another guy a blue eye for some dispute about using any eddys in that section.
People who run this know to go fast, stop nowhere and 100% roll.
There is crazy amazing rivers sections up and down the entire Durance valley. Zero need to get yourself killed or lose a boat in this. If you only do 95% of rolls you endanger your entire team in this section.

@@noahwolfgang799 Recklessly endanger his team? That's a class V no swim section you cannot climb out of in very long section of several miles.
That epic didn't end there, only the initial swim. The rope bridge is an old gone ruin.
People who don't have bomb proof roll are discouraged by the guidebook. Just sayin'

I've got the same Typhoon drysuit as the swimmer at 2:50 and I also always swim in rivers. Could it be a drysuit thing? :|

Everyone saying this was a good rescue are wrong. The leadership was weak at best and you could tell he wasn’t comfortable in the rescue situation from the sounds in his voice. The jersey he was wearing was just a snag hazard and he told swimmer 1 to swim into a strainer. No one else in the group was proactive in the rescue either and he didn’t have a good eye on the whole group leading to swimmer 1 being stuck out of view in an eddy. Swimmer 2 was deposited in the worst spot possible, it was clear he couldn’t climb out with ease. If he got more tired and slipped off the rock then you had an even harder rescue. River safety is no joke. Being 3 years old now tho I’m sure the people are all competent paddlers and have a better understanding of river safety. It’s all learning experiences

@@ChazFryerExtreme The guidebook puts it clearly as a WW V no swim section demanding bomb proof roll. The 70°+ sidewalls drag on for 4 miles up & down.
You can't really reach the road when a boat or paddle is lost. The epic doesn't end here.
They should never have run that at all.
