Hey Malcolm! This was a really great video. Have you got a terrain with different angles of slopes? I would appreciate a vid of just you riding it down, so that I could just get the feel. A teaching vid really help if u go over how to swap edges while not changing direction.. Like how u did a few times in this vid. Thanks for the useful contents of this vid.
Yeah if you check through my other videos I've got ones on different terrain. I've got a steep tutorial, a powder one, and often filmed at different angles too if that's what you mean
This one kinda fell into place for me during lazy laps near the end of the day, but I could never really explain "just leaning on my boots, then leaning on my highbacks" too well. It really feels like low effort, and once locked in, zero effort. Also: Nice mitts, I'm pretty sure they're the same as mine.
Awesome videos!! I check them very often to get more to practice. Yesterday was my first day of season in Germany. Continued to practice my basics. Any advice on overcoming the fear of turning on a steep hill? Although it’s a blue track I pickup speed very fast 🗻
Hey Malcom, watching your videos inspired me to visit Alpe D’huez this December. I’m an intermediate snowboarder and I’d like to know what slopes you’d recommend, also could you please give the name of the slope you rode on, in this video? Hope to see u on the slopes 🤞🏼
This was filmed a couple of weeks ago at Hintertux in Austria, Alpe d'Huez just opened on Saturday, right now, the best slopes are whatever is open! Haha we need some more snow, hopefully it's here by the time you arrive. Start on the front face, the main runs come down from the DMC or marmottes 1 lift and then just work your way out from there!
Hey Malcolm, thank you for the awesome video as always. How would you say this technique changes (or doesn’t) for different snow conditions like powder or more icy terrain? (In powder if I lean forward with my front foot I feel like I lose the nose 😊)
Yeah, powder you can shift more weight to the back foot for sure, for icy terrain you simply won't be able to get the edge digging into the snow, which means the board will be skidding, therefore you also can't really push up into the next turn..ice just sucks basically!
Hi Malcolm, love your videos, perfect explanation and showcase as always! I was wondering where was this video taken, I presume somewhere in Austria or Germany? Looking forward to your reply! 😉❣
Hi, thank you for all the work you put in your videos and all the knowledge you are sharing. Where exactly is this video filmed ? If you can tell us . Thanks
good help for beginners. one thing i like to ad which make it even easier for most ppl to navigate: dont focus on your feet too much, focus on your shoulders. To begin learning try to do the following: your forward facing shoulder (left or right depend on how you stand on the board) stretch out the arm like point in the direction you wana go the rest of the body will align itself automaticly and you go that direction. Point in a other direction with your arm fully extended and feel how the upper body moves the lower part automaticly. also important: do NOT force a movement else u will develop a bad habit and later on might catch the edge and learn to fly xD
Yes this can work, however it can also be quite dangerous, for some people when they think about turning the shoulders that rotation works it's way down through their body and translates to them making the movements with their knees and ankles and they steer the board. Other people simply isolate the shoulder rotation without making any lower body movements and then the board doesn't turn. And if you do this in a skid rather than a traverse, bear in mind most beginners are skidding, then it can lead to an edge catch. So, it can help some people but just realise that it isn't actually moving your shoulders in isolation that helps the board change edge so it might not be the right advice for everyone.
@@malcolmmoore Totally agree with this. 90% of the time when I catch an edge is when I was turning my shoulders in isolation without moving my lower body. Especially when I was rushing the turning process, I just naturally turn my head and shoulders, hoping the board will turn to where.
@@malcolmmoore very good point of yours. especialy catching the edge catch for some. sad i did not have a instructor like you 24years ago and was basicly self teaching by try and error and alot of snow to the face 😅
I’m having issues on heelside where my board skids and comes around too quickly instead of carving. I feel like leaning back more would just cause me to fall. I can carve better on my toeside. How do I fix this?
Skidding is almost always either improper timing or balance on the turn. Perfect balance and bad timing = skid, Perfect timing and bad balance = skid. Start on very mellow slopes with very wide turns and work your way up. Malcom moore and Ryan Knapton's carving basics are excellent to review.
I'm depressed, man! Vail ate up my local resorts (Mid-Atlantic US) three years ago and have transformed the places into absolute garbage. This will be my first time not buying a season pass in the 10 years I've been riding. Those places were my training grounds, where I practiced a lot of your tips at least a couple of times a week for the the trips to much bigger and better places. I'll probably only get a handful of days in this year at places much more distant for me. I'm in my 50s and will probably be completely out of steam in the middle of the first day. Thanks for ruining a great thing, Vail! But also, thank you for what you do, Malcom. You're a great instructor!
Can you fly to a European resort. I've heard that it's cheaper for Americans to do that, than to ride over there. One time, it was cheaper to fly to Canada from the UK, than to try and ride in France or Switzerland. Take the chances while you can. 🙏🏿 It's definitely getting harder. 😢
@@1Flyingfist Yeah, I don't think that's the case right now. Even if it were, the whole problem of me losing my training grounds to a mega-douche company will restrict my old ass from being able to enjoy the experience of an international trip. Without the huge amounts of exercise leading up to a big trip, I'd be useless when I get there. My legs would be dead in a day. My only real option is to move to an area where the resort owners are a hell of a lot more friendly to pass owners. With my luck, I'd move to... say something closer to the few remaining non-Vail resorts here, (West Virginia), and the day we'd close on the new house, Vail would buy Timberline. F*ck that. I'm just going to sit this year out. Again, thanks, Vail.
@@edwarddalmeida9249 A quick (as can be) for-instance: Last year, Whitetail had big water-delivery and lift problems. Because of their late hiring practices, they declined to test anything (lifts or snowmaking) in a window that was in the low 20s in mid-November. It was really COLD for about 5 straight days. The place was idle. They didn't even bother to fire anything up (because they have created set opening dates, that they have failed to meet each time) and wanted to save a little scratch by NOT paying people earlier. There's no question that last Dec was warm, and they couldn't make snow. Nobody blames them for that. Many of the trails didn't open (I shit you not) until Mid-Feb (I believe) as a result, when a vital lift was finally fixed. They actually waited for the lift to be completely fixed before starting snowmaking in that area, clearly not trusting the contractor that they, themselves, were late to hire. I think they got two weeks out of it before the whole joint closed. So there's that. They can't be bothered to test systems when they have the chance. They screwed the more experienced passholders, and I honestly don't know anyone that's bought a season pass here, this year. That pretty much did it for everyone that I know (dozens of previous passholders). This was literally the poorest operation I've ever seen out of a ski resort...ever. I'm 50. The people they bought Snowtime from (eventually) were STELLAR. They moved mountains to make sure everything was good LONG before necessary. Vail sucks at this. Their window prices are so high because they skip half a season in acquisitions they don't care about (package deal). I will never do business with them again. And they are so vial, they'll probably try to sue me for this comment if I don't say that all of this is my opinion and my opinion only. Stuff it, Vail!
I feel for you. They took over a couple in my area. While they have definitely improved the facilities over the years, they're super corporate now and WAY more crowded. Now my local hill joined icon. I dont think its going to make a massive difference since its not unlimited and there's no real lodging in the area to turn it into a destination in still a bit worried about these mega companies taking over
Thank you so much Malcolm, your videos are have been more helpful than all of my years of classes combined. I had one question, how does this interplay with knee steering? Do you initiate the knee after you have sunk back down? I did not know about this pushing off method and have been focused on the knee steering method. Are these different concepts or to be used together?
Nah they're used together, that's what I'm trying (obviously not that well!) to explain at the end. I would take a look at the short turns video that I've also linked in the video description as this really goes over that movement in detail.
6:06 How are you going almost uphill here, and yet you are able to lean downhill and turn without catching an edge? I remember having this problem when I tried snowboarding out for the first time. I would catch an edge whenever i wasn't going 100% downhill. It might have something to do with your board being pointed in the same direction you are moving, whereas newbies might have their board at a slight angle from the direction they are traveling, especially if they are going slower.
Malcom, does the stance influence on it? I mean, I think my posture is not terrible, for sure can improve, but I’m still skidding too much. On toe edge is better but heel edge is very bad. I ended up forcing my front knee (regular) to try to pull the board to make the turn but just get more tired, at the same time, the back leg trying to lift more the board trying to have more grip. I have the impression that I might be short on stance and maybe opening more gives more stability, but I really don’t know and it’s very frustrating not being able to fix my mistakes.
It can be a long journey of trial and error unfortunately, could be boots, bindings, footbeds, stance angles, muscle fatigue of simply not being used to the movements, and to be honest if it's something you only experience on long runs then it sounds like the latter. My home resort has just opened up and for the first time this winter I'm now doing back to back days and I always get the same thing at the start of winter.
Hay Malcolm, I have this question that has been bothering me. On heel edge, when I try to bend my knees and lower my center of gravity, my feet wants to duck out, toes pointing outward, but the boots and bindings are fixed on the board (+18/-9) so I'll be kinda stuck there. When I'm on toe edge and I want to do the same thing, I always end up having too much edge angle...Can you please tell me what I did wrong there?
You might need to adjust the angle of your bindings. I had the same problem and it felt so much better when I adjusted. I use +21/-15, it’s extreme for some but it works great for me. Every body is different!
7:13 I think the hardest part about learning to snowboard for me is that I don’t understand how to lean downhill and not just fall downhill. I understand the posture changing, but in these turns it seems you’re basically just full-on leaning downhill before you really get the edge-change and are able to “slump” back towards uphill.
Yeah, this was actually filmed a few weeks ago on a quick trip over there. Then I was in Saas Fee, those videos will be coming out soon, and I'm currently back in France now!
how it the camera man following you? he's on a board too, but always facing toward you with the camera? so never switches, but also never sways? it's some kind of wizardry

Love it, man!
Appreciate it!
Top vid! Gonna keep this falling over idea in mind (the good kind not the bad kind!) Where is this?
Haha, exactly! It was at Hintertux in Austria when I went there at the end of September/early October
This video should help:

Malcom, does the stance influence on it? I mean, I think my posture is not terrible, for sure can improve, but I’m still skidding too much. On toe edge is better but heel edge is very bad. I ended up forcing my front knee (regular) to try to pull the board to make the turn but just get more tired, at the same time, the back leg trying to lift more the board trying to have more grip. I have the impression that I might be short on stance and maybe opening more gives more stability, but I really don’t know and it’s very frustrating not being able to fix my mistakes.
Honestly it's pretty hard to say what's going on without seeing you ride I'm afraid, as I'm not sure exactly what you mean here unfortunately
Wanted to ask you Malcom, what could be the cause for foot pain and fatigue on long runs? Should i consider getting better boots, bindings, both?
Not sure if there was a question in here or not, but I hope you're understanding it!
are those some kind of step on bindings?
nidecker supermatic
Yes, like the other guy said, there's a link to them in the video description 👍
@@malcolmmoore thanks .... they look better than the burton ones
나도 이렇게 광활한데서 달려보고 싶다!!
what kind of binding do you have?
Nidecker Supermatics, there's a link in the video description 👍
Any recommendations for binding stance distance?
I don't measure mine, I used to be a bit wider, now I'm a bit narrower! Whatevers comfortable!
@malcolmmoore 😂 okay thanks for the tip!
Where you at Malcom? Hintertux?
Yeah, this was actually filmed a few weeks ago on a quick trip over there. Then I was in Saas Fee, those videos will be coming out soon, and I'm currently back in France now!
See you in about a month - can’t wait!
welches Skigebiet ist das ? Grüße
Hintertux in Austria
Nice 🙂
What is this fantastic place?
It's Hintertux in Austria 👍
how it the camera man following you? he's on a board too, but always facing toward you with the camera? so never switches, but also never sways? it's some kind of wizardry
He's a wizard 🪄
What’s with the monkey at 7:28 lol 🤣
