A Walk Through Thomas Jefferson's "Poplar Forest" Home

- The last place I visited and took video at the conclusion of my Train Odyssey 4 trip was US President Thomas Jefferson's 'retreat home' called "Poplar Forest". My group of friends and I had spent the day driving to, and visiting, The National D-Day Memorial (see my video on that), and there was just enough time to squeeze in a brief visit to this historic home, which is a National Historic Landmark.

I remember going to poplar forest as a young person in the early 80’s when my uncle ( Dr. James A Johnson). Saved it from being torn down…it has changed so much with all the renovations. They have done a great job on preserving the home.

Poplar Forest had just been "discovered" during the times I was visiting Monticello so never have been there despite it going into renovation in the 80s. To many with so much at Monticello, Poplar Forest will remain a step child. At least it has been recognized for what it is, a creation of Jefferson when for so long people would react to the modifications that have been done before the renovations as not being recognized as a creation of Jefferson. Great to see it as it has been reestablished. Jefferson always intended it as his getaway from the hustle and bustle of Monticello.
That was great! When I visited Monticello in the early 90's, I bought a coffee table book on Poplar Forest from the gift shop. I'd never heard of it before. The video with added detail was a much richer learning experience. Thank you!

I visited Monticello in 1994. Two years later in 1996 I came here expecting it would be another Monticello. To my disappointment it was not.

No, I was there last month. Someone asked when they thought they would be finished, “No idea” was the reply.

Over did the remodel.
If I am remembering correctly, my husband and I were there 20 years ago. The interior of this house was brick, there wasn't any plaster or woodwork ot any interior walls. Jefferson died before he finished it. I don't u derstand why this fellow said they lived there from time to time.

Definitely not the Original Finish on the wood work a lot of it would have been painted and what would have been stained would have been much Darker much of this house was stripped and Cleared
I just saw the end yeah only the doors would have been Stained ... I don’t get why they would not paint the base and Casings around windows back white you can see in the Video most of it is Made a popper and Spruce just looks messed up

Horribly done. Outside the camera was all over while filming the back of a person not the grounds. Loses voice several times. Inside was worse! Camera everywhere, in a horrible hurry...

I would never allow shoes in there 🤦♂️ever what the hell are they thinking . You would be wearing cotton slip ons to come in there if it was mine shoes and wood work dont go together. Thats disrespectful to his home. I bet he is rolling over in his grave.
Well, Jefferson was a practical man who I suspect would dislike the notion of visitors having to wear funny slippers to visit at his house. But regardless of that, people at his main home at Monticello don't have to wear slippers either, and most of the flooring has been replaced since Jefferson lived there, so it is not sacred ground (or floor) anyway.
When it gets down to it, so much of the extant buildings of this age are a lot like George Washington's hatchet, original in form but with the head replaced once and the handle replaced twice.
Get real, this is a place, visited by thousands of people, i guess you want all of them to take there shoes off. LOL..
