The Hardest Parry In Elden Ring | Ranking The 10 Most Difficult (And 5 Coolest) Parryable Attacks

- The 10 attacks I struggle with parrying the most, and my 5 favourites. Today, we're nerding out about parrying in Elden Ring like it's 2022.
As I've said before on the channel, difficulty is very subjective, and if making the original parry guide series taught me anything, it's that people definitely don't find the same parries difficult. Quite often I'd hear from people who thought the attack I struggled with on a certain boss was the easiest one. Let me know which ones you find most troublesome!
The build here is a very scuffed low level version of my Arcane parry build, with just Ritual Sword and Radagon's Soreseal. No wondrous physick. The very eagle-eyed amongst you may notice what appears to be a standard Misericorde somehow doing bleed damage. I dropped myself 3 Bleed Misericordes (+16, +20, +25 for the various sections of the game) so I didn't have to worry about set-up and upgrades. Dropped infusions don't show up on the equipment bar for some reason. If you want full game guide for a MUCH better version of this build, check out my full guide on it: • How To Be A Parry God ...

I used the ER Practice Tool to loop some attacks for this video (Noble's and Apostle's, as they're relatively rare). You can get it here: github.com/veeenu/eldenring-p...
The slo-mo shots for Morgott were made using the Elden Ring Photomode mod made by Frans "Otis_F" Bouma.

great video!
Well at least he’s done one good thing now, in that. Started learning to parry after watching your DS1 runs back in the day. Thank you so much for watching! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ThingfishyGaming ❤️!
This is wholesome AF.
honestly parrying is still very situational. Instead of "a niche skill only useful on a few bosses" its a "niche skill only useful on most bosses." wouldnt recommend a build surrounding it
can't relate. 1tapped him w comet. ggez
Nobody asked for this because we didn't know we wanted it. Loads of fun.
Haha, glad you enjoyed it, Ron! Thanks for watching, as always!
I did
Today I learned why I always dodge that Black Knife attack wrong, I had no idea that the first movement WASN'T an attack. 500 hours and I just learned that
Haha, honestly I've parried No.1 far more times than I've parried that one. Such a cruel attack. Luckily it doesn't do that much damage! Thanks for watching!
I only just recently learned about the Black Knife fake-out when doing a block-counter run. I kept screwing up the counter because I anticipated a block on the fake swing, and would hit R2 to activate the counter, causing me to be hit instead.
same 😭
Same here, 3,000 hours in
You don't have the right
Parry enjoyers will watch this and say "Hell yeah"
Hell yeah
Hell yeah. I wish my friend would not shit on parry and actually give it a try when you can do cool shit like in this video
God damn right I did
hell yeah. real parryheads rise up
Hell yeah
I saw the title and thought, "now THATS a subject I didn't know I needed to hear more about".
Same! This is my first ever Thingfishy video; I'm not a parry dude at all, the title just looked intriguing, and now here I am 20 minutes later, seriously considering doing a full parry run 🤯🤯
An update 2 days later, if anyone's interested: I'm currently in the middle of a parry run, lmao. And it is SO FUN, Y'ALL OMG.
@@MsCunningLinguistic i got my first kill as an invader by parrying moon veil. It felt SO GOOD.
I bet that Banished Knights first attack is scripted to always be unparryable because they knew some madlad like you would try to parry him and they wanted the teleport to be a nasty surprise. Awesome video dude, easy sub.
You are absolutely right about Malenia quick 1-2, that thing kills me more than all her other move combine.
Yeah, same.
I mean it's bc I try to parry it, but definitely died to that more even if i wanted to roll than to anything else. And ppl complain about waterfowl LUL
It's funny that a lot of people say, maybe as a cope mechanism, that Malenia isn't hard outside of Waterfowl dance, that her moveset is easy and boring, but as someone who has fought her many times, I realized that most of my deaths are caused by her other moves, especially this 1-2, and not that much by WFD
@@warcoder totally agree. purely hating on WFD is one of the most ignorant thing a person can do
For me personally dodging waterfowl is much more easier than dodging her clone attack
The 1-2 was never what got me, I'm surprised to hear that it caught a lot of people
Thingishy taught me how to parry some months ago. It changed my game completely. It took a bit of practice but I almost parry too much these days. I almost always get Carrian Retaliation as early as I can. If anyone wants a fun fight, go to Godskin duo with decently leveled Dagger or something with some good critical. You can run around in a big circle and the fat one will rush you more than the skinny so you can parry and crit him while skinny is kinda just creeping. But the fun part is you can parry the fireballs with Carrian retaliation and actually take them out with the glintblades.
I found this out by chance because I had exhausted the world available supply of lily's and couldn't make any Zzz pots I and had no choice. I don't know how many sleep pots I lost that day. They just kept jumping out of the way and throwing fireballs on me. I think this was only the third or forth time I ever beat them and the other times I think maybe I had mimic summon. And mimic is a much better Player than I am.
pro tip: if you run out of sleep pots, grab Sword of St Trina for access to sleep at just the cost of FP for the L2. super low stats, 10 str, 12 dex, and 14 int, so pretty easy to wield with just a helm and/or talisman from any build.
... i have to try this now
I figuredf out a fun way to deal with the shield bastards too
Intentionally hit their shield then spam parry as much as you can, it’ll get them everytime
@negative6442 also I just found out how to bait the easiest to parry attack from him. If you sprint toward the fat one while he is walking toward you, he will do the thrust from his chest.
Just as if you run away from crucible knights far enough it will reset them to quick marching toward you and their first attack will usually be the overhead swing or the backhand attack. Both are super easy to time.
There is a visual cue for the Godskin noble. Look at his left hand, it will flick downwards right before the attack comes out. If you parry as soon as you see the flick, you will consistently parry it.
I couldn't agree more with the Crucible Knights. They went from being one of my most dreaded encounters to one of my favorite once I got the parries down. Both variants. I can consistently dominate them without getting hit. That includes the duo fight in that Hero's Grave.
Also also before clicking on the video I already knew what #1 was gonna be, and I 100% agree lol. The real problem with that parry though is that after any parry there's always like a 3-way mix of what he can do, and they're all extremely different speeds and parry timings.
Same only morgott actually makes me not wana risk parry
@@littylitz2340 Yeah I pretty much only go for single parries now unless the slow follow-up comes out, going for any of the others just isn't worth it.
@@ASmashedPumpkin7bro exactly the same 😂 I run no hud and no vigor so I can’t afford to fuck it up
@@ASmashedPumpkin7usually the first parry is always fine and I just wait until the moveset where I can parry is in my favour
I won't lie, I've felt this channel has been finding it's footing recently and going in a couple of directions, but this is exactly the kind of content I love seeing you do (maybe that's just because I'm a fellow parry nerd!). Hoping we get some more videos like this in the future.
Thanks, Ethan. Super pleased you liked it. I thought of this as a little taster for the people who only know me for OP build guides of what a technical nerd I am at heart. All the nerdy vids I made early on are great to be able to refer back to for people following the build guides, so I'll likely follow the same path for SotE and get all the heavy tutorials done first. Thanks for watching!
As someone who's always been strongly considering a parry run, but has never practiced. This kind of video is the best thing I've seen so far.
The first minute of this video is just, "You can parry that?!?" over and over again. I never gave parrying a serious try because I couldn't tell when I was messing up the timing and when I was trying to parry something that just couldn't be parried.
I suck at parrying, but I do try, and it's so, so satisfying when I get a successful parry. I enjoy the explanations of frames and such, it really helps understanding the game better. Thanks Thingfishy! :-)
If you ever play dark souls 3 or 1 try parrying there, ds1 moves are slow which makes them easier to parry while ds3 parry has alot of parry frames especially with buckler, caestus is also good there for the almost instant parry recovery
Fun fact: the Bell-Bearing Hunter is just one guy repeatedly invading.
Any video you post is a post we all ask and hope for! Thank you
Thanks, Michael! Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching, as always!
Hoo boy, this video is giving me flashbacks to doing RL1 Morgott and Malenia. Excellent insights, I'm happy to see another parry video from you.
I like parries and all, but this is legitimately just a really, really well made video. Everything from the writing to the audio is legitimately top notch. I'm now gonna binge the rest of your parry series
Whopper production values on this! The music and timing the hits to the beats...wonderful!
Music and editing are so great! I felt like watching premium content, thank you for the effort!
this is one of the best videos i've seen this year, keep up the awesome work. also, at 12:12, i paused to do some quick maths and at 60fps, that 12 frames is about 0.2 seconds.
This is so well produced. Glad someone is bringing more attention to parries because it’s such a fun and satisfying way to play the game
Crazy... this video came out at the perfect time, right when I finished my first parry build. Thanks for all the tips, I was able to pick up a few extra tricks that will make my parrying more satisfying!
After I finished ER several months ago, I played through Sekiro… now I’m a parrying junkie. I’m planning a fresh playthrough when Shadow comes out, was thinking of taking this approach. Thanks for the tips!
How is the new parry physick?
15:38 - This explains so much. I recently did a playthrough using shield parry (I've played using block and guard counter but never really tried to master parrying in ER) and this fight nearly convinced me that I just wasn't good enough at parrying for it to be a viable strategy for me.
It's such a relief to know that the opening volley is simply unparryable, rather than it being due to my incompetence. 😅
Thank you so much for consistently uploading incredibly high quality and informative content. You're one of my absolute favorite youtubers. Love to see it, now I want to go and parry all of these attacks!
The kind of content I was looking for. Thanks for existing
I love the creativity in this video. This was so much more fun to me than most of the ER content examining some very small detail in the game and then coming up with convoluted lore theories about it.
I was looking for a video exactly like this the other day, so i kinda asked for it, even better that it's made by you mate ;)
Haha, that's awesome! Great timing, then. Hope you enjoyed it!
Sure did, i've just got consistent with parrying in Dark Souls, trying to do it in Elden Ring before the DLC now and this will help a bit.
Plus it's really good how you explain everything in a calm almost relaxing manner, it's easy to watch a bunch of your content back to back
Love your editing, syncing the parry to the music. Great video, man :D
besides all else, the sound editing, scripting and the voice acting is flawless. can see the effort that went into it, huge kudos
As someone who learned to parry from watching your early vids, this is my favourite Elden Ring video.
Glad you enjoyed it, Aaron. Pleased the vids helped! Thanks for watching them!
You taught me more about parrying than anyone else
Your channel is always consistent, entertaining and informative, can't wait for Shadow of the erdtree content
one of the best ER videos i’ve ever seen, and certainly one of the better gaming “in general” videos of this year.
nobody asked for this video because we had no idea what we were missing. well done man.
Hey peeps! This video is just a bit of nerdy fun, so don’t take it too seriously. Let me know which parries catch you out the most!
You miss spelled my USERNAME in the credits bro :(
@@kingclawblazer Sorry dude! It will be correct for the next one.
Nerdy but informative bro I didn't know most of these enemies could be parried especially twin Prince I've been deep into ds3 lately. I hope you've been well and great bro. 🙏🏿👊🏿
@@ainsly19 Glad you liked it, Ainsly. Yeah, Twin Princes is a weird one. You can parry but there is no riposte animation, so there's not much benefit in actually doing it. You too, mate. Hope DS3 is going well!
I did Malenia parry on Master difficulty in the Reforged mod and for a long time I thought the fight could not be solved 100%, due to the "quick 1-2". She does it more often if you're very aggressive and it feels to me, as if there are two versions of the move and only one of them has the short pause. Good chance that I'm wrong and it's more of a range issue. I feel like it's almost impossible to parry the move from slightly further away.
Anyway, I appreciate this video a lot, because I've become obsessed with parrying.
Parial parries were so common in ds3 because parry frames for boss attacks were often put in the middle of attack frames. For example, attack window is 6 frames and only the 3rd one is parriable. One of the best examples is Sister Friede 1st phase, almost all of her scythe attacks are only partially parriable. I have no idea what purpose it could be achieving other than adding randomness and annoyance. In Elden Ring, thankfully, FromSoftware put almost all parry frames right at the beginning of attack frames. Commander Neil might be one of the few exceptions accidently forgotten by the devs. You can look up everything yourself in DS Anim Studio, by the way
Love your videos. This is the dialogue I’m shouting when I watch, “what! Wow! I didn’t know you could do that! Love this guy!”
This' one mechanic that I've been meaning to go back and practice to improve on. Thanks for putting this together. As a player who's new to this style of games, I appreciate any info I can get to improve my gameplay.
Man I'm more hyped for Thingfishy's dlc videos than I am for the ACTUAL DLC!!!! 😂😂😂
You are the reason I EVER started to parry things in any game!!!
I tried it in ER and i LOVE it. I've also tried it in DS3.
Parrying Pontiff is soooo satisfying. Still havent gotten past him tho. 😅
Honestly cannot wait, Barak! So excited to get stuck into it. No idea where I'll even start. That's really awesome. It's a super fun way of playing the games. The Pontiff Parry is one of my absolute favourites. Tough fight but a really fun one to learn! Thanks for watching, as always.
Ditto. I just got my first parry in any game ever! Lies of Ps perfect guard made me get a taste for it. I always assumed it was safer but generally less useful in ER and I've never even used a shield before.
I must say, I'm hooked now. So I did what anyone who got death blighted 3 times in a row today would do. Decided to take a sensible break after using Greyoll to pump VIG.
Psyche, I ran straight to Margit after getting my VIG up 2 points at gatefront. This will be a beating I won't soon forget. Can't wait to get my 100th death on Margit. Stay responsible, folks. 😅
Isn’t that faster than like 99% of peoples reaction times
165ms here. Idk, seems normal for me
@@t0xis_live830 You Sir, react faster than 99% of the world population.
I'm 250-400ms on idle, but I consistenly register 170-190ms at Aimlabs
Most people can do with training up to 10-12 frames if looking for it and around 16 reacting, it's common in fighting games.
220ms is average but most young ppl r prob close to abt 180
Forgive me if my math is wrong but 2000ms in . 2 seconds == 119 frames to parry at 60fps (each frame being 16.67ms)? I would say this is very possible considering most people's reaction time on human benchmark would be 180 to 220 milliseconds. The results on human benchmark though are you not knowing anything about when color will change before you press the mouse button. The game gives you information so you can pre-process and get the timing down. So in theory you should be able to do this pretty consistently or at least most of the time with enough practice.
Hey man, just wanted to say that i love your editing/videos/guides, and that i think you're genuinely really funny. Keep up the great work!
This is the first video of yours I've watched, holy shit, perfect.
Perfect pacing, perfect editing, perfect scripting, subbed!
5:26: "It's when the AI queues up to punish retreating players."
Holy cow, this one sentence has explained to me why my recent "2H GS aggressive" playtrough went much smoother than my original "sword and shield - wait for openings" 2 years ago...
Part of it is simply destroying the enemy poise and having them stagger. Being agressive leads to more staggers.
@@BalthazarB2 Yes, that's part of it of course, but I meant it went smoother than I expected from the extra push I'm putting on enemies with the more aggressive play style.
A VERY Underated video! Really enjoyed watching this!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Dude your editing and style are very entertaining to watch
I just started watching yesterday, btw your videos are SO good! Really polished and well crafted. A+
Parrying crucible knights truly is so much fun, and so is the two commanders
I LIKED THE BIT WITH THE SHIELD
The other bit with the shield was pretty good too tbf
I rly liked the editing in this vid, music made certain stuff feel exciting while ur voice is also very calming
Awesome video! I can’t wait to see what shadow of the Erdtree of brings in terms of parries!
I really wish they had kept the DS3 L1 katana parry skill instead of a side slash unsheath.
I wish greatswords could use square off like in DS3. (Although this would be fucking busted)
@@ThiagoCRocha-fh6lg Yeah Giant’s Hunt is pretty close, but not quite the same.
Maybe you should just remake your parry videos, since your production quality and also skill as a player has improved a lot since you made them.
All your videos have very high production value. They're kind of like motivational gym workout videos for video gamers who wanna work out a working way out of the work of repeatedly running back to the boss fight in frustration.
Thank you for your insights and the calm samurai-like presentation.
Never got so hyped to try out a sheild.
Fire edit 🔥🔥
Insane editing throughout and that ending was awesome dude
THANK YOU! This is exactly what I've been asking for since day 1. LET'S GO!
the editing and voice-over were 10/10 amazing video
Wanted this video for so long, glad someone finally made it
This is such a good video holy shit. Well done
great production actually, this is a fun video!
Cool ending of the video, great video! Things I will probably never do, due to investment of time needed. I will just admire for afar and see you do it!
This is one of those videos where the quality and content far outstrip how large the channel is... keep pushing stuff of this caliber and you'll go far beyond where you are right now!
Thank you, I feel vindicated, doing rune level 1 as my second playthrough and I thought it'd be fun to parry morgott to death it was very difficult for me and this helped get the timings down. great video!
Delightful video. As someone gradually just now becoming a truly nerdy parry enthusiast (my first run of the DLC I beat the final boss mostly with parries), this info about the base game is downright fascinating.
I finally got the time to watch… Been hyped since your community post and wow this is som next level freakishly good content. Love it! The nerdier the better :) And definitely Malenias 1-2 for me as well, Ive now accepted that I’m too old and slow 😂 luckily I can keep fairly consistent with the rest of her attacks at least.
Awesome work!
This was more than enough for me to wait on buying the DLC. The level of satisfaction behind parrying knowledge is all of the motivation for more practice. You are an inspiration to myself and many-many more tarnished! Keep it up!
Thank you, i cant stop watching parry guides right now, its a skill i havent made much use of
Really awesome video idea, information, editing and your voice is very cool. Enjoyed my time and now must go and attempt to parry melania again.
Really good editing and music my man! sick video and absolute chad parry skills
Killing it as always! Can't wait for the DLC Parry vids!
Me neither! Thanks for watching, as always, Terk. Hope you're doing well!
But wtf the video quality edit wise and content wise is badass well done bro ❤
Your guides definitely got my parry game up dude cheers!
That's awesome, Village! Glad they helped. Thanks for watching!
Your videos are absolutely addictive!
Sick video, final parry clip was insane
Great vid! Ive always loved the parry and i think its super badass but ive never been good at it lol. I love parrying the horseback enemies haha
this video was so amazing, subbed
Great vid. Very professional and clean
You might think no one asked for this video, but it's exactly what I'm here for. I first started watching your videos, because Elden Ring is the first Fromsotware game I played and I already loved parrys in other games. And your early videos were such a greate help to understand parrying in these games. There are so many parrys you showed in this video, I didn't know existed and I want to try all of them now. Greate video, realy exciting to watch.
Also for the noble parry: I think timing the parry with the moment that noble lowers his left hand is easiest.
Really had no idea you could even parry some of these attacks. Awesome video!
great video! when i play against morgott i used a mediumshield and hold block during the parry minigame to block the first attack in his 2 hit combos and parry the second, it's very consistant and makes that #1 parry a joke to parry, give it a try!
I've never tried parrying in the game, but this was still a really cool video to watch.
Outstanding work!
One of the best videos on the internet.
Saw the watchdog being parried in the intro, I had no idea about that too. I wish it was possible to do a full parry only run but non of the greatrune holders are available to that. 😢
As I am new to Souls games and I never have parried in really any game, learning in Elden Ring is really fun and your parry run video is the one that I decided to do it
Really interesting video! The ducking animation that you mentioned during Morgott fight sparked some thoughts - there has been quite a few instances where hits from mobs or bosses wiff due to some movements by one's own animations. I think it's a great feature! It gives quite a bit of added depth to the combat.
Insanely well done video. Felt like i was watching a documentary instead of a top ten. Good job
I'm so happy to watch a video mentioning the Malenia quick swing. I found my reflexes failing to parry it about 40% of the time even when I'm perfectly relaxed and assume it's the next attack
First, thanks for the tip on godskin noble. Because you mentioned the sound I realized it’s really a 1-2-3 attack. (Grunt, shing, thrust in tempo)
Second, I really loved seeing the teleporting knight get bodied. That was magnificent.
I relate so much with that Crucible Knight statement lol xD. You just get so excited seeing one.
Glad to see other parry enthusiasts, excited to see what bosses are fun to parry in dlc
This video is so well made
Cool video, clever choice of topic
Amazing video bro. I sure didnt asked for it, but i'm so glad you made it.
Also, this freaking Bell Bearing Hunter and his magic sword xD I always tried to parry the first swings, never knew it wasnt possible. Anyway, I agree so much with most of it, and the part about the banished knight is insane
And well, Malenia is weird, but I knew Morgott would be the star of the video xD
Very nice video and pleasant voice. Subbed
Great vid thanks for the tips
Your videos bring me so much joy.
So pleased you like them, Matt. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Fantastically written
Amazing video. Very well made.
