  • Hey everyone, Chris here from Play-in Games! Today, we're diving into something a bit different - an insanely popular and addictive video game called Balatro. This isn't just any video game; it's a card game with a twist. Think poker meets rogue-like(lite?) - a blend of strategy, luck, and a touch of madness. The real question is, how far can a first time player like me make it?
I've been hearing about this game from all corners - viewers, friends, and even my own son insisted I make this video. So, let's see if it's very good or vaporware. I'll be navigating through the game's challenges, exploring its unique mechanics, and sharing my thoughts as a traditional card player.
In this video, I’ll walk you through the basics, give my first impressions, and see how far I can get. Will I break the game, or will it break me? Stick around to find out, and don’t forget to drop your thoughts in the comments. Have you played Balatro? Who broke who?
If you enjoy the video, please like, subscribe, and hit that bell icon for more game reviews and playthroughs. Your support means a lot!

Little newbie tip, you want one preferably scaling chip joker, one necessarily scaling mult joker, and at least two mult multiplier jokers.
So if you have square joker (+4/5 chips per four card hand played), green joker (+1 mult every played hand, -1 mult every discard), and ramen (x2 mult, -0.01 mult per discarded card), you can cruise your way to victory playing four card high card hands and never discarding.

Couple of things, take them or leave 'em:
    1. Always be mindful of the boss' ability.
    2. Unless your Jokers value them, use all discards.
    3. You can also use your Hands as discards.
    4. Tarots are there for deck manipulation. Eleven Aces of Spades? No Problem.
    5. Planet cards are Jokers that do not take up a Joker slot. They give flat Mult and Chips, but they ramp up.
5a. Have a Joker that gives chips, one that gives flat Mult, one that gives XMult.
5b. Scaling (gaining) Jokers are important to victory.
5c. Seals are not animals, but you gotta catch 'em all. They will generate more value the earlier you get 'em.
    6. Not all Jokers are useful throughout a run. Feel free to swap them out depending upon the context.
    7. Cash is king.
    8. The more shops you see, the more Jokers you can shop from.
    9. A Joker on its own is fine, but most every Joker has synergies. They are your implement. Using them synergistically, and looking for them will work for you better in no time flat.
    10. Interest matters, save up money until you can earn maximum interest on your payout.
    11. This game speaks the language of poker, but it is not poker. Your will and mind will determine how you fare. Design your own path through the forest of unpredictability.

Love these, thanks! Yes cash is king, any run that is low on cash has been a short run. I hadn't thought about the interest, but I will now. I've done much better using the planets, especially when focusing them on my most used combos. I'm going to try some of your tips on my next run!

3:50 making wild cards act as any number would actually be a really good balance change, I think

Yeah, I haven’t been able to get past level 18, I’d welcome any edge at this point 😂

@@Play-In-Games as a "gamer" with over 100 hours in this game over the past months, i would say that the way you're playing here seems pretty smart, but there are a lot of things you need to keep in mind as you get to higher rounds that come with practice (like noticing which jokers work well with the cards you play; the one that you got to multiply your score can be very good if you play and upgrade a hand like two pair that can be played easily a couple times per round). if you save money and try to be on the lookout for jokers and tarot cards that are better than what you currently have, it becomes a bit easier to keep up with the difficulty curve for a while. other than that, keep playing and maybe check out a youtuber like Balatro University if you want to look at some more ways you can improve(or what the game looks like at an advanced level.
nice job so far, i liked this video of what its like to come in from scratch!

@@Play-In-Games as a "gamer" with more than 100 hours in balatro over the past months, i think the way you're playing in this video is quite good, but there are a lot of little things to be aware of that come with practice, like the way each joker you have interacts with the specific cards in your deck. for example, with the joker you got that multiplies your score if you play the same hand twice, you can aim for big scores by targeting an easy hand to make like two pair, and upgrading it to make it more consistent. with some practice you can learn which jokers are helpful in certain situations and be on the lookout for any joker or tarot card that might be an upgrade to your current situation, and its not too hard to outpace the difficulty curve for a while. you could also check out some youtubers like Balatro University if you want to learn from them or see some high level play.

Any number wild would be way too strong. Being able to have a card that can consistently turn any 3 of a kind into a 4 of a kind, or any 4 into a 5 of a kind would be too much.
Besides, I'm fairly sure the reason they don't exist is because they don't work. If you played 5 cards, 3 Jacks, 1 Wild Number, and 1 Two, does the wild become a Jack or Two? It could be a 4 of a kind, or a full house, and depending on your jokers, you could want either of those.
The same thing would be true with playing 5 wild cards, there's no way for the game to pick 5 of a kind versus straight versus full house.
The way they would have to add it is "Become a copy of the left most played scoring card" and that's really not a wild number anymore, it's a copy card. Which could be ok as a spectral pack thing, but definitely not as something obtainable through Tarot.

The disadvantage of skipping blinds is not getting money and having to play a harder blind without getting to go to the shop.
