Elephant Survivor Fishan 5 Years After the Fracture | A Special Day for Fishan!

- Today we look back on Fishan’s journey since he fractured his leg five years ago. In this video, Adine and elephant carer Owen tell us more about Fishan’s injury, his recovery, and the challenges he still faces.

🐘 THE INJURY
Fishan fractured his leg in September 2018 when he stepped in a man-made hole that he could not see. He was unable to walk back to the homestead or to any water sources, and so the carers put a bathtub filled with water on the back of a bakkie and took it to him. That night, Fishan had to sleep out in the bush, and the carers stayed with him all night. The next day, Fishan and the carers slowly walked back to the homestead. For the next three months, Fishan stayed at the homestead every day.
Tending to Fishan’s injury was not an easy task. Mobile x-ray machines couldn’t take decent x-rays of Fishan’s leg, which made treatment more difficult. The first cast that was put on his leg broke after two weeks, and the second cast had to be taken off within a day because it was cutting off the blood flow to his leg. Putting Fishan under sedation for these operations came with several risks as well.
Many people would have put an elephant with an injury this severe down. “The option was either to put him down or give him a chance,” Adine explains. “But you know, where there's life, there's hope. And Fishan not only got his second chance, he had a few chances in life. And he took them all and embraced them.”
🐘 THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
For months after his injury, the carers and the elephants did their best to help Fishan. During the days, when the other elephants were out in the bush, some of the carers stayed behind at the homestead with Fishan. They read to him, spoke to him, played music for him. In the afternoons, the other elephants came back to the homestead and the little ones ran up to him to greet him.
“So Fishan actually was not alone. To be honest, he was not alone,” Owen says. “Of course, for himself, he was in pain. We cannot deny that. But the fact that everyone was trying by all means to say, ‘Fishan, don't worry, we are with you.’ And then the hope was there.”
As the months went on, Fishan’s leg healed and walking became easier for him. Eventually, he was able to join his herd in the bush again. Things weren’t quite the same - he couldn’t walk as far as the other bulls anymore and had to start foraging with the cows and the youngsters, and he lost his position as second in dominance among the bulls to Jabulani. But Fishan adjusted to his new circumstances. He grew much closer to the cows, and he started helping matriarch Tokwe to look after the younger elephants.
🐘 FIVE YEARS LATER
Five years later, Fishan is doing well. He walks slower than he used to, and he has a slight limp. In the winter months, when the temperatures drop, his leg is stiffer and he walks with more difficulty. He needs extra medical care during this time, to ensure that he’s not in too much pain. His injury also led to him developing a pressure sore on his injured leg, because it’s easier for him to lie down on his left side when he sleeps and use his stronger right legs to lift himself up. The pressure sore still needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent the wound from becoming infected.
Despite the challenges Fishan still faces because of his injury, he spends his days doing the things he loves. He walks with his herd, he swims in the waterholes, he rolls around in the mud. Owen explains that the team worked very hard to give Fishan hope. “We find that his life is a little bit more difficult, but we're not gonna lose hope from that,” Owen says.
To Fishan, Owen says, “We love you, you are still gonna be an elephant, you are gonna do all the things that you wish to do in your life.”

In the lockdown here in 🏴 I broke my ankle , wasn't able to have a X-ray, I was told it was a bad sprain ,hence after I found out I had broken my ankle, I was walking but with a limp, my Knee gave way with oestearitis, so now like Fishan I walk with limp because my ankle healed but not in the right place, love Fishan ❤️🐘hope your pain is not to much !

Five years. It seems like it was only yesterday as I followed like everyone else every step of Fishan’s treatment and recovery. I am still truely amazed at the teams efforts and the memory of that time.

@mortalclown3812 the climate emergency is a result of the ongoing catastrophism cycle of planet earth. If you want to know more about it, I recommend the Suspicious 0bservers channel on RUclips. We go through this roughly every 6,000 years. It's all because of the Sun. And anybody with basic college level oceanography 101 knowledge knows that when enough ice melts the gyres shut down - and that brings at least a mini ice age. What I find most fascinating is that the upcoming catastrophe provides the mechanism through which the Biblical prophecies - the earth reeling to and fro like a drunkard, the islands & mountains disappearing, and the changes in the sun, moon, & stars - can all happen! If I didn't have faith in Jesus, I'd be very concerned. But I do, & it just gets me excited!

“Where there is life, there is hope.” A wonderful belief that saved Fishan’s life. He wanted to live and be given the chance to continue contributing to the wellbeing of his herd. And did he ever! The little ones get comfort from this huge bull’s protection and love, he gives valuable assistance to Tokwe, provides loner Bubi with a close friendship and continues to participate in mentoring Mambo and Zindoga. Just an amazing guy.

Regarding the wound and Adine’s worry about maggots, there is medical evidence that they can assist with healing by consuming the dead and infected tissue (they leave the healthy tissue alone). The HERD team saved his life and continues to give him the best possible care. Thank you for all. you do for this magnificent boy and the rest of your elephant family!

I have Cerebral palsy it’s a condition that causes tight sore muscles and it also affects mobility depending on severity some of us not able to walk at all or speak(it’s caused by a brain injury usually at birth)it makes walking and balance a challenge sometimes causing falls. I’m very blessed that my case is moderate and I’m ambulatory about 90% of the time I’m also dealing with chronic pain as a result so Fishan holds a very special place in my heart he’s my kindred spirit and I see a lot of similarities in our challenges. This boy is a warrior and I fall in love with him more every day with a family behind you who’s willing to fight for you and be there for you through it all along with dedicated doctors there’s always hope.🐘💜🥹

It is so inspiring that Adine and the Herd carers were willing and open to giving Fishen a chance to live. He certainly had a will to live the best life possible. He has been such an asset to all the Herd members. He is a wonderful elephant.

An amazing effort by all to help this majestic elephant. So much work and devotion to help him recover. Amazing all that was done to help him feel part of the HERD even when he could not be with them. My heart is so thankful for all of those things. How precious is this story of Fishan and how relationships kept his spirits up! It speaks to the intense love and respect that Owen, Israel, Tiger and Adine and all staff had for this handsome bull during his injury and recovery, and also now as he lives with pain. I've had this situation several times with rescue cats that no one wanted because they were not "perfect", and I KNOW that --- assuming good medical care --- it is precisely the relationship that is the medium for change. If they feel the bond of attachment and support, AMAZING things are possible. I resonate with the carers in Fishan's story and respect HERD all the more for it! He Beat All The Odds!
There was a post recently from a subscriber who also had a leg pressure wound. It was posted 2 days ago, and it was on the picture of FishTheMan that Herd had linked on utube.It explained how she had a dr actually get the pressure wound to heal. It sounds promising , and I hope the HERD team will read the post.
I'm going to donate. FishtheMan is our gallant elephant who is in the end the Father of this Herd.

Thanks for the info abt Uncle Fishan's journey🐘🥰! It's truly amazing that the vets and the entire HERD team were able to care for him and helped him successfully heal. I hope everything that was done for Fishan in the process was documented and perhaps submitted to a journal of veterinary medicine so others can learn from the experience. When you think that horses (including very expensive thoroughbreds) are routinely euthanized after breaking a leg, the fact that Fishan wasn't euthanized and is doing so well 5 yrs later is really a miracle. I didn't know Fishan was castrated when he was young. Maybe that's why he's friends with everyone in the herd.

I didn't know that about elephant bull testicles! I can't believe I never wondered, I mean they're obviously 'missing' from his backend! How did I never follow that train of thought?!
This may explain why he is SUCH an absolute sweetheart as well, and less prone to want to fight yet still willing to step in for reprimanding the younger ones. Fish is my favorite, thank you for giving him the chance to do well when he broke his leg, the world is a better place with him in it!💖🐘
