Your dedication to training for the UTS 100K is truly great, Ben! It's amazing to see how you're tackling the challenges, especially living in an area without continuous climbs. Your journey is a testament to perseverance and creativity. Wishing you all the best on race day!
Going up isn't really the problem. It's going down. Snowdonia is a ruthless beast. I hope you were well prepared. Nothing replicates mountains in training except for getting onto the mountains ❤
Completely agree, unfortunately getting to the mountains wasn't practical for me with the nearest being 5 hours drive so I only got out to them once in between work and family commitments. But it was enough to get the race done
Nice one Ben 👏 training took a hit over here with a strained calf 😭 Hoping to recover quick and will catch you at Snowdonia if not before around Brighton 🙌
Yes we were wondering how you practice running eity those underfoot conditions. Really interesting how you still address factors we would associate with road running such as VO2 Max and LT
Yes it's hard to mimic them around here but luckily we at least have a couple of semi rocky and chalky spots that can help a bit. I target VO2 max and LT first as they represent the max sealing for performance so good to raise them first and they can help with strength for ultras too. And then I move to the more specific ultra focused stuff with elevation, endurance and terrain. So going from least specific to most specific to the event during the training cycle. Some actual mountains in this block would be the icing on the cake so hopefully can get a trip out there before race day!
Mate it sounds like you're really nailing the training bud! Great use of what you have to hand to replicate the race conditions with the reps and the gym work. Love the idea of the journal bud! I think times going to fly now before we know it it will be race day. Keep on smashing it bud! 😎🤘
Thanks mate! Yes not long at all now, feels very soon. Hopefully will get out to the mountains for some final long climbs but if not happy with the trianing so far. Congrats on your race today, what a result 👌🎉
Nice vlog, Ben 😊 Great to see the variety in your training. Ive been in the gym more at the moment as I'm balancing a lower leg niggle. I've been doing 10 minutes of backwards walking on an incline of about 6% - it's making a real difference!
Cheers Ian 👍 Funny you mention going backwards, I've started incorporating it into my drills I do to mix up the muscle groups though can't imagine having the coordination to do it on a treadmill 😅
Thanks 👍 I made it in Excel as a custom plan using some of the materials from the ultra coaching course I've been doing with UESCA. I have a bank of sessions that I tend to pick and choose from each week for specific sessions like intervals, tempo, steady State runs etc
The not so aptly named South- ease sounds like a useful location for your training especially with the built in aid station. 6400m though, that's mind boggling. You seem to be doing everything you can to prepare though, so I'm sure you'll do great. All the best mate 👍🏻🏃♂️
Thanks Andrew. I haven't been doing the stair master as much as I would have liked but usually once a week though would like to go twice, just fitting it in with work and other training has been tricky. Up to 20 mins on it so far aiming to keep the heart rate in Zone 2 and doing a few mins single steps then a few mins douole steps. I'm hoping to build towards doing around 45 mins on the stair stepper by the end of this block
Nice one, will put something together on kit. It's definitely the longest kit list I've had for a race so just trying to make sure I won't need a wheelbarrow to fit it all in
I'm using a belt from Decathlon which has a place for poles on the back of it. I'll be doing a video about kit over the next week and will include it in there. Really good belt, similar to a naked band.
Southease hill is Satan's playground 😂. Went out from Devil's Dyke passed Ditchling Beacon (to the Pink Pit Stop) and back this morning. The wind?!! It's very easy to get a few thousand ft of elevation for sure, but agree continuous climbs are hard to deal with. I used poles today too, I found a more comfortable rhythm was pole movement on line with your natural arm swing? Right foot/left arm, left foot stride/right pole strike. It's a quicker movement but feels more natural... I'm considering sacrificing SDW50 to focus on UTS actually. Annoying they're so close together.
It's tough up there if you're going into the prevailing wind! Feels like running on a treadmill sometimes where you're running but not going anywhere. I sometimes use that technique as well but usually just on really steep hills where my steps are slower and my arms can keep up with it! I know a couple of people are using the SDW50 as their last long run before UTS but trying not to go all out for it so legs can recover for UTS
@@timeonfeet WOWWW!!! It's totally another level again!!! You've really gone from strength to strength over the last few years, Ben, but that is a massive challenge for anyone!!! Btw, do you still do your regular "ice" baths??
@@bev9708 It's going to be a whole different kind of challenge but looking forward to giving it a go. I don't do the cold baths too much these days as I've read a couple of things about how it's important to let your body get used to dealing with inflammation in recovery on its own. I'll still do a cold shower or bath here and there but not to rely on as a recovery method
@@timeonfeet Ohhh that's interesting!!! My plans for the summer are to get some poles and head for the Alps to learn how to use them!! ENJOY your training Ben, sending lots of courage!!! I'm tapering now for my first full 50k trail race in 2 weeks. Unfortunately I picked up a bit of a lung infection shivering for an hour in the rain after a very very tough muddy 26k trail race last weekend, so 🤞🤞that clears up quickly !!!
@@bev9708 all the best for the 50k Bev, look forward to hearing how it goes and I hope the lung infection shifts! Getting out to the Alps sounds a great plan, never been myself but heard the trails are stunning

Thanks Mihai! Yes I've had to get a bit creative with trianing to try and get mountain ready but hoping it'll pay off. Thanks for watching 🙏

@@timeonfeet good nan. Great video. I hope UTS 100km went well for you 💪⛰️👌
I'd recommend practicing with poles on the downhills as well, they really do help going that way as well
Thanks Mark, will definitely gives this a go in training 👍
Interesting video, cheers
Thanks Ash 👍

My absolute dream to be fit enough to take part in this event
I hope you get to take part in it 👍

Brilliant video, was wondering what kind of workout you were doing on the stair master and how many times a week?
