In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates an easy earring project. Learn how to quickly turn dapped, textured sheet metal discs into beautiful wearable button earrings.
The secret to successfully doming your textured sheet metal disc is to use a hardwood dapping block. The hardwood dapping block is softer than a steel dapping block. As a result, the use of the hardwood tool won't damage the texture you've applied to your sheet metal disc. Also, the hardwood tool has a more shallow curve to it. This allows you to create dimension with your sheet metal discs without them shrinking into half spheres.

Professor Ahr, I recently finished the Silver Jewelry Course and am beginning with copper projects. I watched your dapping and texturing videos and am interested in making the textured button earrings. I cut out a dead soft copper sheet circle, textured it with my cross peen, annealed and pickled it and then tried to dap it. There's not much texture left. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for OJA, I LOVE it and it is helping me.

Hi Sue! Thanks for taking the Colorful Silver Jewelry Course. I hope that you enjoyed it. The reason why you are loosing the texture on your discs is because you are using a metal dapping block with metal dapping punches. You need to use a hardwood dapping block and punches. There should be a link to purchase a hardwood dapping set in the description to the video. : )

Hi, Prof. Ahr! That makes sense, not sure how I missed that. I will get a hardwood dapping block and I"m sure that will do it! The silver jewelry course was so helpful, and provided me with the information that I needed to get started- I would highly recommend it to anyone. And the price was so reasonable for the depth of information that you covered. Thank you again for OJA! @@OnlineJewelryAcademy
