This is my favorite Paula Abdul song
This was the remix of the Shut up and Dance remix album by Shep Pettibone. The original version was produced by Babyface and L.A Reid for her debut album ''Forever Your Girl''. This was her first ever single and also her first song ever to recording in the studios after she sign to Virgin. She used her money of her choregraphy job of work before and she making a demo. She was know by many record company because of her choregraphy job, but one day, while she was one of the represent of Virgin, she said, ''I can Sing''. After she make a demonstration of her voice in the executive of Virgin, she signed with Virgin and started to recording her debut album. Her session with Babyface was desastrous and Babyface shout out Paula of the studio after the first session. She never return working with him again. This song was from this session and was finished of the album. After that, she work with Eliot Wolff and Oliver Leiber and Paula have a great chemistry in the studios with theses two guys. The two produced the rest of this album.
This video was incredible and Paula give all her talent of her dance and her choregraphy, depist her voice was so limited. This song was a very low budget and the video also.
She sttrugled to breakthrought in the music industry has a singer with her debut album and all declares a flop at the end of 1988 because the two first singles (this and ''The Way That You Love Me'') received limited success and didn't nothing. Theses two songs didn't crack the top 40 at all. it's really changed when the San Francisco radio started to playing ''Straight Up'' (a another song of this album) since it's was the B-Side of ''The Way That You Love Me'' and the song gave already so much airplay then all the radio give the same thing, because of that, ''Straight Up'' was released has the third single of this album and ''Straight Up'' was know to be her breakthrought in end of 1988-debut 1989.
Wow interesting!!! Thanks for the background
Wow I didn't know this was her 1st single. The original version does not sound like a typical LaFace production. I remember seeing her on Showtime at the Apollo back then performing The Way that You Love Me. It was before Straight Up hit and I had no idea who she was, though she danced her heart out.
oh i like this. People can diss her all they want for her vocals but she did have some damn funky music, especially on the first album.
Paula actually did the choreography for Janet's Control videos..she was in a couple of the videos too
Oh cool
Please react to Straight Up , Vibeology and My Love is for real. Thanks for reacting to my girl Paula Abdul.
Shout out from Trenton New Jersey.
This was my favorite Paula Song back in the day also. After 1990 Madonna was my #1 favorite, Paula was #2, and Mariah was #3. I loved Paula circa 1990-1992, when I was 12-14 years old.
Cold Hearted is a great second favorite Paula song, but for me, personally I just think this is Paula's coolest song.
Paula was pretty loved and huge in the late 80s early 90s, but I just think she wasn't talented or innovative enough to keep up with the times.
Her first two albums were very successful, but her 3rd album lost the spark and she never made another proper album.
One highlight of her catalogue for me personally is a great song she released 12 years after her last album. In 2008 she released a cool/highly underrated single (and video) with Randy Jackson promoted during American Idol called Dance Like There's No Tomorrow. This song totally should have been a hit.
Even though my tastes had long changed by 2008, even today I still think Dance Like There's No Tomorrow is a pretty great song.

Great song. Paula has many great songs like "Straight Up", "Rush, Rush" and "The Promise Of A New Day". Also the songs you already reacted to are great.
There are some great videos on RUclips of Paula teaching Janet. I love this song but Straight Up is my jam
Oh cool!
This is one of the first albums I bought when I was a child. I was 11 years old in 1988. My sister and I used to dance around the living room to the songs on this album. I don't hear 'Knocked Out' as often as her more popular hit songs, but I still remember the words (!) and still enjoy it. That said, it does have a sound very much of its time.
***I CAN'T LEAVE 'TRIVIA TIME', BECAUSE APPARENTLY WILL C-D WAS THERE IN 1988 LIKE I WAS, SO, READ HIS COMMENT, SO I DON'T HAVE TO WRITE IT OVER AGAIN.....TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...ha-HAA!! ...talk about, 'Knocked Out'!! "😆" *EDIT* : ....The original peaked at #41 Pop, at least I can add SUMPTHIN'! ..ha-HAA!
I hear all theses info in a documentary about Paula abdul when i was teenager around 2007-2008. This is the reason why i make all theses inside fun facts and i know theses things about that.
😂😂one of the rare times RBS is silenced
@@EmpressReacts ...I KNOW!! ...and I was DYIN' to leave Paula trivia! ,,,ha-HAA!
Reverse it. Paula Abdul choreographed for Janet Jackson or so I believe. Paula Abdul was a dancer by trade, a Lakers Girl or later hooked up with Arseneo Hall who helped her get into music.
You definitely need to check out Paula Abdul's "The way that you love me" the original version, the choreography and tap dancing really shows off Paula's skills as a dancer and choreographer.

You so need to react to straight up it was her signature tune ❤😊
R&B singer Pebbles did the background vocals for this. L.A. Reid and Babyface production trademarks. This came out shortly after Girlfriend in 1988.
Yeah I remember that.
Empress once again you are so correct! Knocked out was my favorite Paula song, especially to dance to, UNTIL Cold Hearted Snake came out!! FIre!!
Vibe🔥
Listen to... straight up...by Paula Abdul...you will like this one the best of all ..
Yeah this version sounds different than the one I remember. But always loved the video - this was before "Straight Up". Choreo was top notch for back in 1988.
Ooh empress🙄,this a diff beat need the original,ITS WAY BETTA,BEAT HIT.
It's was the remix by Shep Pettibone.
This is my Favorite also from paula
Cold harded is my lest favorite
Original version is much better than this one.
This track is my favorite of Paula's upbeat dance songs no matter its chart history. And "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" is my favorite of her ballads. And yeah, despite the mixed opinions, the girl can sing. Whenever I hear any of Paula's songs and her vocals, there is no mistaking her sound.
I got this cassette in my Christmas stocking when it came out. I wore this tape clean out! Classic album full of hits!
Never heard this one. Awesome :D
I like the original version better than this remix version. You can hear the early LaFace sound in this.
And this remix version was from Shep Pettibone also.
I believe this was her debut single in 1988 which was a minor hit. Her second single was “It’s just the way that you love me” which didn’t do well though it was a great song and one of my favorites. Her third single was “Straight Up” which was as huge smash hit and made her a star. She later remixed and rereleased both of her debut singles again and they then charted much better.
Another Babyface hit
This was Paula's 1 st single.modest hit.no one knew who she was.than came straight up.with the album.she blew up n they gave it a 2nd release as like the 5th single from the LP!! Don't even recognize this version.the original was my favorite song of that summer my please check that out
Ah. So this was Paula's debut
The video she REALLY needs to check is "Rush Rush"
I just know she'll throw up some 10's!
Thanks Empress, you reacted to my favorite Paula Abdul song.
Np!
This is one of my fave Paula “dance” numbers. I choreographed a dance for this in college for a dance class I was in; it got me an “A”. Anyway, I just hate this version of this song. I absolutely despise it. The video is original; somewhat. They attempted to alter it to match this remix. This remix was done by Shep Pettibone who produced Madonna’s Vogue and some of her other songs from the Erotica album. Shep remixed some of Paula’s other dance songs and I believe the album was simply called Shut Up And Dance (The Dance Mixes). Back then, remixed songs were either a hit or miss. And I think this was just a cash grab due to Paula’s popularity. But this remixed song in particular was not a fave of mine. Hopefully, you’ll listen to the other one and hear the difference. Again, it’s a great dance song. But Cold Hearted is a much better video and song style wise.
Interesting ‼️
Paula got hate in the 90s because she really couldn’t sing. Great dancer , choreographer and cheerleader but she was pulling a Milli Vanilli musically. For some reason the industry thought she could sing. This song was written and produced by Babyface.
Paula sing, look the whole concert of her 1992 ''Under My Spell'' tour, she sing live 60% of her songs live during her shows. But her singing voice range was limited. She wasn't a lipsynch singer like Milli Vanilli who theses last never sing his own voices in his albums. She recording her vocals in all the songs of her debut album ''Forever Your Girl''.
@@WCD199317 Paula Abdul can not sing…AT ALL. She was an industry gimmick because she was a successful choreographer due to her work with Janet Jackson and that’s it. Only tone deaf people really think she can sing. One of the Mary Jane girls did a lot of her vocals. Even Whitney Houston called out Paula Abdul…ruclips.net/video/ah0a8t1GY7w/видео.html
Paula gets hate? What?
Yeah I've seen clips from the early 90s where ppl were shading her
@@EmpressReacts Wow, maybe just vengeful because she was special talented and successful.
I always liked this Paula song, but yes I'm with you - Cold Hearted is my favorite and always has been.
Vibe🔥
My favorite cut from the album, but this remix misses out on the groove of the song. I think you'll like the original version E!
I remember liking this song a lot when it first came out and believe it was her first ever single which you can kind of tell from the low budget looking video 😂 I do agree with you Empress that Cold Hearted Snake is probably one of her best singles and videos followed by Straight Up but this one is still probably one of my favs of hers. I am not really sure why her popularity started to wane but I think it was ultimately the fact that she just did not have a good singing voice although she was a good entertainer. I think pop music was also changing and her music just lost its appeal.
🤣I thought this was a first based on her hairstyle
@@EmpressReactsOMG Yess! That hairstyle was not it! She obviously had no budget for hair and makeup. She looked much better in her previous cameos in Janet’s Nasty and What Have You Done For Me Lately videos. 😂😂
Never hear this. It's okay for like background music. 😄
😂😂😂dang
Paula had a couple of minor or non-hits before Straight Up. The original single version of this song was her first single and nearly made the top 40. The version of the song in this video was the Shep Pettibone remix promoting her remix album after the Forever Your Girl album exploded and ran its course. The footage is from the first video. Shout out to Shep who was everywhere at the time!
