  • BioShock Infinite vs. Quantum Mechanics: The Real Science of BioShock Infinite, starring Parallel Universes! Flux Pinning! Schrödinger's Cat! Wormholes! Spoilers! and the rest. Here comes the science part (it's all the science part).
    In 1912, when BioShock Infinite takes place, the world was on the verge of the scientific revolution that was quantum mechanics. Small wonder the dizzying science fiction of BioShock Infinite draws heavily on eye-widening quantum phenomena such as Many-Worlds Interpretation (for multiple universes) and entanglement (for trans-universe communication).

    About schrödinger's cat: there's also a voxophone about the state of a man during baptism, in the water the man is both sinner and saint, until his true identity is revealed when he surfaces.

      Its the height of human arrogance to assume that a particle or set of particles (namely a cat) cannot decide its state until observed by a human. The universe (namely other particles) are observing constantly and at a far greater level of detail.

      +Naveen jeet Because some of the explanations aren't very good or precise. But if she has a M.S. i guess she's just having a hard time simplifying.
      She doesn't really anything wrong, some of it could just say better. And unless there is something about the hypothetical worm hole i don't know they only allow spacial travel or at least not time travel as it is normally understood.

    Love this episode due to the science of it, did not know the level of science Jane had and is impressive how clearly the science was explained, the quantum entanglement isn't really going faster than the speed of light because the action of one of the particles causing the other entangled particle to move are connected in a way akin to two gears meshed together, the "gravity" that holds the galaxy together is permeated throughout the galaxy and all particles are connected to it... the center of the galaxy rotates and all the solar systems move in accordance to it, this wave function like force causes the two particles that are entangled to react instantaneously regardless of distance as they are still essentially connected, also all forces are essentially different types of magnetism, and magnetism is the energy wave function while the particle is like a condensed knot of the wave function, this is why when you "observe" a particle does it cause its effect because it simply reacting to the addition of a specific energy pattern of the wave function... this is only theory as I have not proved it through experiments but I do consider the ease of which this could be proved by the many experiments that have been done that fit nicely with my explanation... also to mention I find it funny that my name is also Robert

    calling it levitation suggest that it is done by supernatural means there fore the other scientist believed it was nothing short of magic, but She mentions how it simply failed to fall suggesting its an outright elimination of the effectiveness of gravity's pull on it either by over powering gravity on an extreme level or diminishing gravity effect entirely

  • @LordCaladus

    As far as the Lutece Particle is concerned and Quantum Pinning; it could simply be that Rosalind Lutece figured out a way to package the magnet/supercooling/particle in a container such as shown in Burial at Sea. Also, given how American culture was in the Infinite Universe it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility that Comstock got supercooled magnet tracks or platforms installed so that Columbia could exist.

  • @MerryMarvelite
    @MerryMarvelite 11 лет назад

    Quantum Entanglement is also used in Mass Effect. In Mass Effect 2 the device with which Shepard communicates with the Illusive Man uses quantum entangled particles to allow lag free communication accross a galaxy.

  • @onyxtay7246
    @onyxtay7246 8 лет назад +13

    Well the Luteces flipped the coin 123 times. So even better than 100.
    Also time travel in Bioshock isn't really time travel. As in Bioshock time isn't linear. Everything happens at the same time, but we interpret events as occurring separately. That's why the Luteces say the line "Lives, lived, will live, dies, died, will die." So time travel isn't traveling through time. It is simply traveling to a place where you are experiencing something that humans say happened at a different time.

      Dead on. Plus they didn't cover the fact that she wasn't jumping through time in one universe, it's actually a different universe entirely because Columbia and Rapture never exist in the same universe.

      Time is also relative. Happening all at once from a non subjective point of view. So. It'd be very mixed around. Happening at the same time on different timelines. Of course she could travel between the universes in a way also time travel going outside of relative time in one universe to the next

    The key thing to remember about Schrodinger's Cat - that thought experiment (first, not a real experiment that he carried out) was actually meant to point out a paradox that can occur when talking about quantum mechanics. It was specifically to make people think about the fact that we only see quantum effects at very very very small scale... the thought experiment was meant like "So, what if I make it such that a larger scale event is dependent on a quantum event?" The paradox is that the large scale event (dead cat) should NOT have a superposition - it's either dead or alive - but the triggering mechanism (emission of radiation from a radioactive atom, a subatomic quantum event) exists in a superposition of states until measured. So, either the emission is not a quantum event (but it is) or the cat exists as both alive and dead simultaneously (which it doesn't) - and so, we have a paradox.

    The coin always showing up heads has to deal with the constants and variables theme. Every time Booker got to this point it always came up heads, or he always doesn't row. It goes with the theory that this is the Luteces' 123 attempt at fixing things. It took them that many times to get the variables right, since they found that you can't change constants. Booker always picks #77 even why they try to stop him.

    with the siphon working she was bound to wherever she was physically, and the tears were already there and were, you know, tears; but then she went god-mode and she could go wherever she wanted, and she chose a nice spot to watch Songbird drown

    • @shannonsmith924
      @shannonsmith924 5 лет назад

      Fernando Rayón Hierro there's lots of issues in calling it a wormhole. Because it's not that at all, even in theory. More like a doorway. And being outside of time would cause her to experience time all at once. And see it. Through the doorways. Then travel to different universes and places from the outside of time location.
      So.. no. Not wormholes

  • @Ceece20
    @Ceece20 8 лет назад +1

    Jane on the theory of time travel, Steven Hawking (and other various scientists) came out with an explanation why backwards time travel is theoretically impossible. The explanation is if a wormhole was created, it would be so unstable that literally anything with mass would cause it to collapse on itself. Another theory suggested that even if you found a stable enough wormhole, the feed back caused by light particles moving from one point to the next and back again would also cause the wormhole to destabilize and collapse on itself.
    While backwards time travel is mostly impossible (you could use alternate worlds theory where the alternate world is exactly like your own but 40(whatever) years back in the past), forward time travel is very possible. Many possibilities exist for this from moving fast enough, to creating a forwards traveling wormhole, to finally getting close enough to a massive object like a black hole. So forwards time traveling is possible.

      +dogsrulenw08 the possibility of a stabilized wormhole is real. also by traveling using a wormhole once you reach the other side you will have bypassed the speed of light which means you will effectively be in the past. how far in the past you are is determined by your distance if you travel back you would return to the present

      The problem is. Elizabeth isn't creating wormholes, she's simply traveling to another universe that has its own timeline. It's not going backwards or forwards. It's going outside of time then entering it. Events outside of time would be happening all at once. They always are in other universes and time itself. So the only way she could safely time travel is. By going to a place not subjective to time outside of the universes and timelines which is the lighthouses.
      Then she can simply enter into any universe and time zone she pleases. It's like if you went instantly from one state to another with a different time zone. Things would happen same time. But time would be different and events too. Parallel to eachother. But not touching

    Some person (from digipen I think) has expanded on the idea of tares and created a game called "Void" it''s pretty cool, you should do a video on it :D

    Hang on can quantum entanglement also be used for teleportation? Example you have 2 objects a sphereic object in this case (ball) that is connected to quantum entanglement... let's say you throw the object away from you is it possible since in quantum entanglement that the object is still connected to the other object you have in your hand and therefore can warp yourself towards the ball you threw at?

    I was just under the impression that in the case of Rapture it was a early onset universe she brought them to (a universe where the big bang took occured earlier but running parallel to our own) The Rapture shown occured along the same timeline only in this case the universe involved had begun earlier than Infinite's universe by a few Decades...

    You know we are on youtube and discussing about quantum mechanics. Le´ts just get to the point...You know things and i know things and call it even. Because i think the discussion don´t bring us very far^^. Greetings Dylan.

    there is also a voxophone by Comstock that references schrodinger's cat : One man goes into the waters of baptism, a different man comes out, born again. But who is that man who lies submerged? Perhaps that swimmer is both sinner and saint, until he is revealed unto the eyes of man.

    To be honest, I think the Lutece particle works better than real life quantum levitation because the infrastructure only needs particles to keep them suspended in the air while flux pinning requires Superconductors and magnets to work in tandem and this particle allows levitation to occur more independently.

      You need to get better friends:L!
      Having said that, I'm in the same boat; my friends are fabulous but only one of them is a scientist, besides me. My dad is a physicist, so I talk to him about physics/other science. I think it's partly because this kind of stuff is considered boring, especially as it can be quite hard to understand. And it's not all sci-fi aliens and spaceships (quote from non-sciecey friend).
