    I'm Indonesian, when I was a kid, there were two varieties of Salak sold in Traditional market. One variety tastes more sour and has a bit of stringency (dry mouth) and the other (Salak Pondoh) is sweeter. I remember that the sour ones have reddish color and overall orange color, but its bigger than the Thai ones, and looks rounder. Nowdays, its rare to see the sour ones in the market. The salak pondoh is more common

    Fun Fact! there is a third Snake Fruit, Salacca Affinis, it is endangered and rarer than the other two. also there are many different types of indonesian Salak such as Salak Pondoh, Salak Gula Pasir and Salak Bali. Gula pasir is one of the only Monoecious variety.

    around min 3.11 sec when you break a part fruit meat you can see like thin membrane covering whole fruit meat you can try to peel it first before eat it, because that stuff make fruit didnt taste good, usually i always peel it by rub it with my thumb after peel the skin, basically its like second layer skin from this fruit, some ppl its ok to eat it but if u wan try some new experience just try peel it before eat it im sure it taste better, also this fruit seed actually can roasted and drink it as coffee so if ppl love coffee i think is worth to try it

    Hi Jared, to make things even more complicated, there are actually 2 varieties of Thai Sala, and they have different names in Thai. One is the one you showed on the video and its called Sala as mentioned (สละ). it is more enlogated, sweeter, thicker peel and more thorny. The other one is called Rakam (ระกำ) and is rounder, have a nipple like shape at the end, the color of the peel is lighter red, have thinner peel, less thorny, and is much more sour. i saw some comments here from Indonesians, and maybe Rakam is Sakak Medan and the other is Salak
    Pondoh, i am not sure.

    I am lucky enough to grow both varieties here in Far North Queensland. I love both varieties though IMO the Bali varieties are more sweeter but like you said at the start if the fruit is not fully ripe can dampen the enthusiasm. In my experience the ones that have no seed have been crossed with with the wrong variety and the flesh is a bit flowery and not intense in flavour. Thanks for doing a great review on these wonderful fruits. I have plants for both varieties if anyone is interested.

    Salak from Bali at beginning of Monsoon season is the best! Fruit is sweetest at the time. The later one waits the chance of a fermented or soured fruit. If fruit is harvested too early it has an astringent or drying sensation in the mouth. Think of eating unripe persimmons ... same type of mouth sensation .

  • @agunlogisteam
    @agunlogisteam 3 месяца назад +1

    The indonesian salak cultivar is already a lot confusing. The two main ones are pondoh which is smaller, sweeter, and drier. Then you got the bali variety which is larger and juicier with hint of sourness (my favorite, actually).
    And then you got the minorities. Condet, manonjaya, etc etc which is harder to find in market because they often sold as pondoh or bali 😂
    Perhaps one of them is a hybrid between zalacca and walachiana?

Made ice cream with the Thai variety, also difficult to do but REALLY good. Yes; Juicy Fruit gum is the flavor + a bit of (old) pineapple, as you said. The mature plants are nasty and want to kill you in many different ways. I'm going to keep trying to grow them dispite the past failures. There's a popular Thai drink, of artificial Salak, bright red and like chugging a chemical factory. Also the flavor in Thai "pink ice" deserts.

    If the skin is bright, it is not ripe yet. If the skin is darker, it is ripe.
    If the flesh is dark, it is sour. If the flesh is light like garlic, it is sweet.

    Are these related to strawberries? What does the tree and leaves look like? Is it a nut?

    • @dondobbs9302
      @dondobbs9302 2 месяца назад

      They're in the palm family. The plant has big, nasty, razor covered leaves. They're fruits, not nuts. It takes having male and female plants to get fruits.

    Isn’t one of them particularly more spiny than the other ones? Like, there’s a variety of those that you would definitely not want to handle without wearing some pretty thick leather gloves if memory serves.

      According to Wikipedia, the Indonesian snakefruit does grow in the Philippines, but I don't know if it's been cultivated. You might need to search in online stores to find some. The Philippines does have its own Salacca species, S. ramosiana, but I don't know if the fruit of that is eaten.
