Photographers, is social media worth your time? (what's the alternative)

Is social media worth your time as a photographer? Here's what I know about social media, it can be well worth it if the time in the right areas is put in, but it depends on the algorithm, what's trending and you're competing in a space that is pay-to-play (ads).
What if while you put the effort into social media, you put your time elsewhere, also into your website. With your website, you own it, it's not subject to the algorithm. If you put work and effort into creating helpful, resourceful pieces of content, than you can build off of those for years. Your site can get stronger and more well known. IF you start now and put the work in.
Both are great, so do both! But put a big chunk of focus into your website, or ask someone to help you.
