The biggest problem is not that a deep fake will embarrass someone. Rather, quite the opposite. When a real video surfaces showing criminal/unethical/genocidal/etc behavior... the culprit will hide behind the deep fake shield. In other words... scream 'fake news'.
Additionally, software detection is pretty useless. We are dealing with machine learning here. They'll just train the algorithms against the detection software until it doesn't get detected. With today's processing power, it'll take a couple hours at most.
We will be an endless cat and mouse game. Detection gets better, deep fake tools improve. And the deep fake tools have a huge advantage since they can train against the newest detection software. The detection tools, however, won't often have access to the newest deep fake generators to train on, just a few released videos. There will be significant lag in detection capability. At best, the software will be able to flag deep fakes that predate it by months.

I knew the implications of deepfakes years ago
when I saw youtube channel CorridorCrew doing a "passable" Tom Cruise.
Granted they had a voice actor for the audio,
but something like this tech could spark court proceedings, even wars.
