What helped the members of Toto get more involved with the Thriller album is in part due to Steve Porcaro's involvement with 'Off the Wall' album. Steve is a fantastic writer and a great keyboard player. These guys were also heavily involved with the Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees album. If you Wiki each band members discography, it will blow your mind how many different artists they have been involved with.
Steve Lukather wrote the guitar for She's a Beauty and Talk to You Later for the Tubes since they needed radio hits, not to mention I Love L.A. by Randy Newman. Jeff played for everyone since he was a session pro at 15 going on the road with Sonny and Cher
It wasn’t just Steve Porcaro, who actually only programmed synths for two song on Off The Wall. But Steve Lukather who played guitar on 8 songs on Quincy’s 1981 album “The Dude”.
Human Nature was played for TOTO by the “writer” but TOTO didn’t want it. Also; the words “why, why, tell ‘em’ that it’s Human Nature.” were the only words “written” by the keyboard player from TOTO (that remained on the final Thriller album). The music and the style of singing (that remained on the Thriller album) was definitely the keyboard players from TOTO’s creation.
I'm so glad Joe came back and showed what his voice is really like, he took a real horrible time of it when he toured 'The Seventh One' album and it was clear the drugs and alcohol got to him around that time. It was a real shame and people thought he couldn't sing (the band had to shrug it off as a sickness), end result being he had to be dropped by the band. Even though it was clear that most of the guys had a real issue with these substances and it affected their lives, the singer took the worst end of it because of the nature of his instrument (vocals). Here he showed that he had recovered from it, and what a great singer he was. Just a real shame it was a bit too late after being dropped and Jeff having already paid the ultimate sacrifice. These guys are true idols of mine musically and here we see the true colours shining again! Wish I could've been at this, and wish Jeff was still around and doing the thing that made this band extra special. Toto, the world has yet to realise your true talent!
Hellrun Hello, your commentary is spot on. Yes, the drugs and lifestyle took its toll. It was difficult to see them in the after affects. They still "have it". This performance is great loose and enjoying the stage. When they play their "magic" returns. Have a great day.
This could have easily been a Toto song from Toto IV, adding to its greatness. I think Bobby Kimball would have knocked this one out of the park at the time, but Joseph does an amazing job as well.
These were also the same guys who played a lot on Al Jarreau's albums in the 80s. Think of "We're in This Love Together" and "Mornin'". And this live version is wonderful, especially with Joe shining out in his later years. Thanks for sharing this.
He actually turned round to signal when her singing part was finishing, as its only 2 bars unlike the later 4/5 bars main vocal. He even raises his arm at 3:19 to remind her to stop, and yes indeed a little nod to show his appreciation. She was probably screwing it up in rehearsal, as its easy to forget that it goes back to the verse after only 2 bars of the "Why oh why" bit and most people would carry on singing it (as thats how everyone remembers it!)
@@3allz She didn't screw anything up, man. She's a complete GUN vocalist. She wouldn't be there with them after years of association (or P!nk) for that matter if she wasn't. She knew exactly where to come in and stop, it ain't rocket science.
Props to Kumi. However the band members of Toto were appropriately credited for the songs they contributed to on the Thriller album, which was about half the songs. If you look at the album sleeve, they are credited with their contributions. Also at the end of the album sleeve, MJ and Q list each of the people that worked on the album. They got their credit. Theses guys are gun musos, and they would have gotten many more studio dates as a result of this.
so cool! When I was 16 or 17 I met David Paich on the street. My being a pianist and a huge fan I told him he was a big influence and that Rosanna was the first piano solo I ever learnt. He laughed and said he's forgotten how to play it (Greg Phillingaines had been touring with Toto), and joked and said I should come over and teach it it to him!!! ha ha
Michael Jackson give another feeling to any song this the Toto version sounds good but Michael Jackson was the soul of the song the Toto guys make the instrumental part the voice of Michael makes you feel like in a concert with him.
So in a tiny room with most of the original guys in Toto plus Nathan East and Simon Phillips on drums? Holy shit. That is guaranteed THE MOST talent that has ever been on stage.
It's AWESOME to see and hear them play my favorite Michael Jackson song that they played on! Thanks, Toto and Steve Porcaro, for giving it to my childhood crush and making it one of his most famous songs on the "Thriller" album!
Joseph Williams is just nailing the vocals. Love the vocal arrangements on this live Toto version. And the groove is just terrific....but then again it is Toto!
Always interesting when you really like a couple specific bands / musicians, and later find out the behind the scene connections between them. Makes sense because whatever aspects of their music I enjoy was cultivated and influenced by one another, bringing that common thread to both.

Luke is very generous. When he says they played on this slice of sublime sweetness, he means they all wrote it - arranged, performed. And Luke came up with the guitar on the spot in front of Quincy Jones. Doesn’t get any more legendary than that. And people are wanting a studio version recorded of this. Time for a Through the Looking Glass vol. 2. 😀❤️❤️
@@cathybedwell1877 Just like you Lmfao! That's why you don't have a pic. Oh, don't worry about mine, "Cathy". I don't put one on purpose to strike a nerve on broads like you ;) Lol!
Would really like to hear Toto knock out their own version of this tune in the studio (NOT the demo - lol - which is interesting, ... but is very much a demo).
Where are you from istarted Smalltime? They just finished a tour of Europe and the UK. They will be touring the US from the end of July, with one date in Vancouver at the beginning of the tour.
Had to check this out after Tim Pierce's The GENIUS of Steve Lukather's Rhythm Guitar

Yep
That's how I got here!!
Me too
The song that almost wasn’t. Thank God Quincy let that cassette play until it flipped to the other side
I just saw that !!!!!
(t)auto-reverse...
True, but it only becomes magical when Michael Jackson voice is leading the way.
Amen to that!
Naw I'm confident that instead they would have recorded it first. They actually do it far better. And this is live and it's better
Must be great for Steve Porcaro to play this song live.
I'm sure he's proud of it!
After Toto didn’t want it. He tells the story Toto wanted to do more stadium rock songs. Oh well
@@DavidKfilmmaker and then Human Nature played in bigger than life stadiums around the world ..the irony.
Yeah but Toto should've went with the original lyrics here.
This band helped make the biggest selling album of all time, fantastic !
+Gordon dodds just helped? They pratically MADE it
+lorenzo “lorecaffe95” cafferata no dude they helpes
*biggest selling albumS
Exactly, but that was mainly Jeff.
Just with those royalties Paich,Luke and the Porcaros could retire definitively from music....
This song is so great that it would’ve been a hit somehow but can’t imagine anyone bringing it to light like MJ did
Apparently the take on the album is his first recorded take. That’s how good Michael was.
one of the most beautiful songs ever written
this song was an instant hit & still once MJ put his magic touch on it .
Tim piece sent me here
MIchael, the King of Everything made this song enormous, but only Porcaro and Toto made the sound to HIM.
Steve Lukather was called in to develop the guitar part for this MJ hit.
the story behind this song is very touching..

Why must people be so brutal to one another? It’s human nature sadly
Joe's voice sounds great. Killer tune.
M J took up this song at different divine level... love you M J .
I would think most Toto fans are more than aware of the music they've helped create. It's not like a secret that Steve Porcaro wrote this initially.
Tim Pierce brought me here.
My favorite Michael song written by a musical genius, arranged by one and performed by one!
Song is timely for me in this time of horror...
Thriller is my favorite Toto album of all time
I love TOTO and no wonder why Thanks Steve for this beautiful song that we love and MJ did so wonderful with it.

Jeff didn't die of the drugs. He had a hartcondition and wasn't strong enough to survive a strong poison that he had used for his garden.
Hellrun I remember him from Star Search. Then he sang background vocals for Jeffrey Osborne's Don't Stop tour.
So true x
Omg, I love this song way back then with MJ and I love it even more with TOTO
Steve lukather! He makes it look so easy. Thanks so much for uploading this.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Steve Lukather can play anything!!!! super talented
BigTimeBluesFan989 That entire band can play anything!
!Great voice by Joe! Luke and the boys ALWAYS putting it on the ROOF!!! TOTO RULES PERIOD!
That is my favourite song of MJ. The guitar line is amazing.
I've seen Toto in concert a few times and they are always amazing. A very talented bunch! I love seeing them.
that time MJ was the king of the world!
Fucking awesome. And no lip synching hear. I think the artist of today could take a lesson from this. A REAL live performance.
I'm not saying they do on this performance, but Tote is notorious for using a ton of autotune in their live performances. :)
Yes I love TOTO
Would you care to explain how, and when you've seen them useing autotune on vocals live?
Only time I remember is on the falling in between live DVD and that's it so what the fuck you smoking?

Until today....I had NO IDEA Toto were the originators of this song...which happens to be my favorite by Mike....

love this song and the most fantastic band I love sang it ... awesome!
