The great central valley in California used to have many small lakes, marshlands, and herds of wild game throughout. Then came the farms, towns, cities etc and everything changed. There are a few spots here and there where a wildland area was saved or restored but most is now farmland and big towns. Tulare lake is a prehistoric lake that was formed by Sierra snowmelt before it was drained by man. This last winter was so far above average rain and snowfall, they couldn't stop the lake from forming again. The area where I live in Northern California normally gets 35 inches of rain average. This last winter we got 70 inches! Amazing!
Just shows you can't halt nature back.
Mother Nature at her finest. She rules!
Yes. Not to mention large lakes like Tulare and notably Owens Lake diverted to make Los Angeles inhabitable. Glad they're both coming back strong. For now.
Yeah they intentionally rerouted the entire lake to feed all the farms an it dried the whole lake.
I wish more people knew about that. Almost no one knows that people unintentionally drained that lake trying to create farm land that wasn’t there
@@pmccoy8924 LA took advantage of the Indian tribtes that lived around the owens valley at that time because they had no concept of water rights and were ripped off royally. They used to fish out of owens valley lake. They used to have big boats taking stuff across the lake. It was a life line for many wild birts
It was a lake roughly 800 sq miles in size. It was purposely drained for farmland mostly owned by JG Boswell Co. It does this 'flooding' thing periodically.
Glad this lake came back. The underwater aquifer needed to be replenished.
Exactly. I live over a HUGE underground lake that was used for years to water golf courses. Very illegal to since I live in Arizona and the northern part of the greater Phoenix area.
This is what happens when man thinks he can manage the weather, then God says, hold my rootbeer.
It's great seeing a natural lake flow again
Feel bad for those a farmers but I must say there is something so beautiful about nature reclaiming it’s land
Nature always takes back her own.
@@jeanhansel5805Always!
It won’t be when your begging for food in the near future
@@shur7318🤦♂️😅You think this one dot on the map makes that big of a difference?
@@shur7318You're
Hey, you’re out in my neighborhood. I’ve got some videos I took earlier this year of this lake. My job (Corcoran State Prison) was surrounded by it at one point and I even had to drive through part of it to get to work a few times. Great video, as usual.
my area too! hi, neighbor!
This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on RUclips. Just wow,
Drone footage is really awesome!!!
Chris you are in my area as you are about 50-80 miles away. If you are still in the area, have you ever visited the oil seepage around McKittrick California. This is not due to drilling but natural seepage similar to LaBrea tar pits. Really interesting geology.
Incredible! I study a lot of geological tectonic and terrain history this lake was drained by man before the hover dam and Glen canyon dam projects proposal stages of construction.
There’s an early 1800’s map that shows a lake in CA’s Central Valley that was 75 miles wide and 300 miles long.
I went there over the summer. Super cool to see. Had noticed the water level was roughly 3 feet below the high water mark.
It used to be the largest lake, by surface area, west of the Mississippi.
Tough for the farmers. Still California needed the water. Hard to know what to think. Be careful out there.
But it's not suitable for drinking.
2:46 is such a great shot. looks like it's in the middle of a sea
Chris, very cool! One thing about a lot of those crops you mentioned: they're consume vast amounts of water, which is just one part of the Calfornia's water problem. Sad for those whose crops and farms were inundated with water but not sad that this was much, MUCH needed replenishment of it. Keep up the great work!
WOW, I have nightmares about driving through an area and suddenly huge amounts of water flash flood and cover everything just like THAT. All of a sudden, the road is gone. Man there is NO way I would drive through there, I couldn't do it.
Hi
I also felt extremely uncomfortable watching him drive over that area as well. Like he was going to fall off into the water ! Good video but it made me anxious.
🌸👱🏼♀️🌸
Tulare Lake is the residue of a massive lake, lake corcoran, which existed around758,000 and 665,000 years ago.
I live in Tulare just north east of the lake basin and I can tell you summer 23 was the most humid ever. As a kid I remember the last time it flooded. I think it was ‘79 or ‘80.
Thank you, Chris! ❤
Awesome, Chris! Thank you!
Very interesting! I've never seen anything like this. Thank you!
This is why you leave mother nature alone. Good to see the lake back
Absolutely 👍
That is insane! Great drone footage also
Thank you for Beautiful Video on Lake Tulare! 🌺
Great video Chris. I had never heard a thing about this until I saw your video on it. Thank you for sharing this. You have been one of my favorite RUclipsrs since I got my first PC some years back. Thank you.
I can't watch past 2 minutes...I have a "thing" about driving into water. It's a major stressor. I did a thumbs up and this comment and will watch the next one. 😮
Haha I appreciate it! Definitely understandable
Great video Chris. Can't wait to see what else you post.
Fascinating, Chris! And sad, as well. The lesson, in the end, I suppose, is that Nature always wins.
Wow, crazy, Thank you for sharing
1:27 nice back to the future reference!
Chris, you always take me to interesting places. I've been a fan and subscriber for a few years now and I appreciate you letting me tag along with you.
Thank you.
There's something similar in Coquille Oregon that the locals call "Winter Lake"
That's the area my okie ancestors headed for during the Oklahoma dustbowl era. So many arrived in raggedy shape by went on to make a good living and decent family income.
Many of my relatives are buried there, some still live there, and I'm still in the Texoma area 😎👍
Interesting story....I didn't know anything about the "new" lake there.
Mother nature always wins
Thank u for sharing this tragic story Chris😮
Thanks again for an interesting video
Wow, that is amazing.
No news reported it
Very informative and educational thank you 👍

Dude is honestly upset that the drought might finally be over.
Come north of Sacramento then you'll be in my neck of the woods. 👍🏻😎 I hear there's already a bacteria spreading through out the lake now... don't come into contact with it unless you know it's a safe area.
Crazy how that happened. Since you’re here in California, you need to go check out the old #1 main track up at Norden in the Sierras. It’s right up your alley.
It's definitely a mystery and it's always good to see nature reclaiming it's former land. I feel bad for the farmers in that area.
It's not a mystery at all? It's just nature not caring what man does.

we have lakes and roads like these up here in northeast south Dakota. North Dakota too, with the Devils Lake.
Welcome back to the USA! I hope you had a wonderful trip. It sure looked awesome from all the videos ya lucky dog haha.
You’re in California again?! Come visit in Chico!! I told you a year or so ago I’d buy lunch if you come by. Let me know and keep up the awesome work. 🤗😁😁
Earth is the landlord and we are the typical renters thrashing the place. Glad to see the landlord get some payback.
On the other side of the mountain range - Walker Lake NV is also regaining water. YAY!
WOW! I didn’t know this.
ty, wow

Great aerial footage. Gives us the total picture .
That was very interesting 👍👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🌄🌄🌄🌄
Oh you're in my state,. Cool
The farmers drained the lake in the first place, and now they wonder why there are droughts.
Wow what a lake. I never heard of that. Its near San francisco. Its a tough issue isn't it? Thanks for sharing.
That's crazy
That was cool. Good job. Let people make their own conclusions.
Yes, it's a refreshing take
surreal.
VERY COOL,THANK YOU CHRIS
That's crazy.
Owens Valley is probably back.
You`ve actually captured a life-long nightmare that I`ve NEVER been able to get rid of---I can`t believe I can see in real life what I`ve been dreaming about for 50+yrs.--the only difference is that the body of water is the Atlantic(I live on the coast of Maine,in a small town called Brooklin,as close to the water as you can get, believe me)....The road I drive on just becomes swallowed up,just like this,by nothing but water everywhere in every direction, and I can`t swim,so THAT fed into the fear, still does........
Strange reading this…I too have had this dream numerous times over the years and it always seemed or felt like it was based between Kennebunkport and York. Definitely New England at least and definitely the Atlantic. The part at 0:16 really reminds me of it. Honestly really odd reading your comment on here. Curious if it’s super common, something to do with living near the water, New England, irrational fears, just us (!) or ?????
go take some initiative and take a swim class anyone can learn to swim its almost a natural instinct
Wish I could,Chris---I`ve got MS now and am fighting the wheelchair, but have a sinking(pun intended) feeling that it`ll win in the end...But I`ve ALWAYS had a really bad fear of the water--in a boat,I`m fine;just something that`s been there from the start....@@imchris5000
I can actually see why you feel that way. When I lived in NAS Brunswick, Maine, we were nearly surrounded by water. There was one time heavy fog rolled in on the next peninsula and I was driving blind and I promise you, if it wasn’t for some random sign, I would have driven off the cliff into the ocean. Your fears are not irrational at all my friend!
Where water once was, it will be again!
yay... you're in my neck of the woods.. well, I live nearby
If the lake was drained by man, good that it got brought back to what it was originally meant for. California is always gripping about a water shortage. There you go California!
incredible video. Very sad to see.
They are the Sierra Navada. "sierra" is spanish for "mountain range" so saying "Sierra mountains" is kind of like saying "Mountain mountains"
Aint drinkible thats for sure😮
If it does recede, the soil left behind should be high in nutrients where it isn't polluted.
Nice Video!

Record snows in the Southen Sierras last Spring led to an increased runoff that was 4 times greater than what is average. The runoff fed rivers that run inro the Central Valley basin, the site of Tulare Lake. Tulare Lake had been diverted and drained to create the productive farmlands in the early 20th Century. On a positive note, the farmers have been able to store karge amounts of water for future use and the groundwater aquifers, which have been over taxed and lowered, are being replenished.. Unfortunately, the loss of croplands does impact the cost we pay for certain food items.
Out of curiosity, is there still snow form last winter, or had it all melted during spring and summer?
@@MrToradragon There is still snow .
It looks like an ocean.
Love the content and the Cubs🧢!!!
It wasn't snow melt that filled it. Was a lot of rain last December and following months.
pipe it to Lake Mead
For all the uneducated people with their assumptions. The entire valley is more than half of CA agricultural output. It feeds a ton of this country.
Terrible what happened to the farmlands but.. what a nice view! It kinda reminds me of that train scene in spirited away.
I agree, it's amazing out there
Wonder if they’ll get a bunch more snow this winter.
what date did u do this recording??
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO ,, HOW SAD.. LIKE YOU SAID THIS IS OUR FOOD AND MOST OF THE FARMERS $$$$$$$$$$ THE FARMERS DONT MAKE MUCH AND THEY WORK AND WORRIE ABOUT THERE CROPS DAY IN AND NIGHT ,, I KNOW I WAS A FARM BOY WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND THERE WERE OTHER FARMS UP AND DOWN THE STREETS,,. THANKS>.HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!!!!!!!
Bugs and frogs , seen the same in utah once 😊
That’s weird as hell!
Wow 😮 I didn't know that had happened there and i had passed through there before! How far does it go?
larger than lake tahoe they say. you can't even see the other side of the lake.
I would think with need for water in California that noone would be bitching about that water.
What drone are you using ?
Nature finds a way to reclaim what belongs to nature !!!
Maybe will help with the water table a little bit at least.
My understanding is property owners are still waiting from the results of a study to determine the amount of money they will be getting
That study won't be ready till next year
👍🏻✌🏻
Id rather see it be a lake
How long is that road in the water?
Yeah and the nino hurricane/typhoon rains that dumped near there.
Atmospheric rivers last winter are what started the reappearance of Tulare Lake. The snow melt increased it. And yes this farm land does supply the country with a lot of product. The company it hit hardest was the Boswell’s and sorry I don’t feel sorry for that greedy company. As far as “Californians are bitching about to much/not enough water” no we’re not. We need the water but the country needs the products that are grown here so prices don’t skyrocket. For those of you who are just “hearing” about the lake I suggest try a google search or even here on YT. It’s been covered everywhere. So until most of you cynics have lived here keep your negativity to yourselves please.
Have a great day!
LET THE LAKE LIVE
It will do the ground some good
Can't mess with Mother Nature .
"So I'm headed towards San Francisco." Turn around, man. I saw a photographer get beaten and robbed for his camera. It's no longer safe there.
This was filmed before I was there. I forgot all about filming it. Luckily I had no issues in Frisco
But Al gore said that the world would turn to desert.
Remember at the end of the day mother nature will take back whats hers
