HI DeMarius: I am a what you call a Comeback Trumpet Player. Basically, I played Trumpet in High School, and after HIgh School Quit playing. Now in my late 50's and early 60's, I picked up playing the Trumpet again. YOUtUBE has been wonderful, and I learned about "ANCHOR tONGUING, A.k. a. The Tongue Arch." It is a technique that those Trumpet Players who can do it, allows the player to play Higher. I haven't quite yet figured out how to do it. So, I watch a lot RUclips videos. During the Pandemic, I picked up playing the Soprano, Alto, and Tenor Saxophone. I taught myself how to play in the Altissimo Range on the Soprano and Alto. I haven't quite figure how to play in the Altissimo Range on the Tenor. Anyways, this is the video I saw where a Saxophone Player was using the Anchor Tonguing Technique. Do you use it to play in the Altissimo Range?

I am recently realizing that I anchor tongue after 5 years of recent clarinet playing. It's tough to break the habit, but I'm going to give it a go.

I anchor tongue and have for 9 years. I've reached the point where I cannot progress anymore without completely resetting my tongue position. Thank you for the video!! :)))

Thanks. I've spent years of feeling like trash because I absolutely couldn't pull my tongue back far enough to tongue in the tip of the reed and breath, literally. Being demonized about it almost had me give up clarinet. I get a very weird fuzzy sound when I try to move my tongue far back while playing like their is no space for air.

Hi, Demarius. I have never heard of anchor tonguing until I saw Scott Paddock's video, so I wanted to see more opinions. I learned the "ta ta" method in school from 6th grade and never learned anything else. So now I am 60 and getting back into my sax playing. I am not having an easy time of anchor tonguing. I do have a difficult time keeping a good rhythm on faster songs and I think anchor tonguing might help. I have a clarinet, but have never spent serious time learning, but I appreciate your comment about doubling and staying with one way of tonguing. Also - thank you for your service. My son was a DI at Parris Island in the mid 2010's. My career was in the Navy on submarines.

I was anchor tonging for about 10ish years before my university teacher noticed. Everybody always said my tonging sounded heavy and actually said they heard "ghost notes" (still haven't figured out what that means). I couldn't tongue clear 16ths above 100 bpm, which made playing Mozart's clarinet concerto quite annoying at times.
I made the switch this year after I finished my undergrad and honestly it feels so much better. It feels lighter and my friends noticed that the articulation is much cleaner.
I've hit a block though when it comes to anything above a high C. I start getting weird spaces between notes. Funny thing is once I made the switch, the problems in my embouchure and breathing are now front and center. I think getting those things solid will probably improve the high register.
Anyway this is a great video! Thank you.

i’ve been struggling with tonguing smoothly (i get a sound that sounds separated and straight and it doesn’t swing) on eighth notes when improvising when i come to a fast passage i want to play, my tongue doesn’t move fast enough i’ve been told to anchor tongue but it’s difficult to me and whenever it’s fast i would just sound like a super young player who can’t swing and it’s super frustrating, any recommendations?

Hmmmm...I would actually try not tonguing at all. Focus on making sure your “fingers” are swinging (I’ll make a video on it soon)!
