Apparently Ubisoft just barely dodged a hostile takeover back in 2018 by Vivendi, a French media conglomerate.
That sure explains their frantic decision making since then. The last actually good game from Ubisoft since then I'd say is Anno 1800. But even then, that game wasn't developed by Ubisoft themselves.
