    You really should look into sending that gear to a shop that can do 3D prints. They can 3D print materials nowadays that beat injection molded parts in strength, and they'd be able to very easily 3D-scan that part and fill in what's cracked to then re-print it within a few days for much cheaper than you're going to find it online.

    Check the speed of your generator, although it doesn't make much sense, it could be that the microwave syncs off the normal 60 hertz incoming power. If that's the case, the generator engine engine may be running 20%ish slow. I think your kilowatt meter will tell you the frequency coming in.

    • @Rudt2691
      @Rudt2691 7 месяцев назад +4

      Agreed, I worked for a VCR company that the clock ran slow. It was determined the house that logged the complaints AC was lower than 60hz which affected the clock as it uses the 60hz frequency of the AC.

    • @theoccidentaltraveler
      @theoccidentaltraveler 7 месяцев назад +12

      There is a governor adjustment that affects hertz on Onan generators.

      We literally just had this issue with our microwave in our RV too. We had a 30 amp ran outside for us to plug in and the ground was wrong and it wouldn’t work. Once that was fixed everything was perfect. It even affected the ham radio equipment badly (had a loud buzz). It’s perfect now.
      I wonder if the microwave is fine when it’s plugged in? If so it’s definitely the generator.

    Eric, I wish I could see the gear setup, I was a machinist in a sprocket and gear manufacturing company for five years and have been selling power trans products ever since. I know I could id it and recommend a replacement that is common throughout the industrial world.

    You could just get a local manufacture to make you a new gear. They should be able to use the existing gear to design in CAD and use a water jet or similar depending on the material you want to use.

    I have a travel trailer and I always put my cat in the truck before I put the slide in and leave him in there until the slide is out. You should maybe put the kitties in bathroom before operating the slide. Cats love to do what cats do and it’s better to be safe than sorry! Glad your fur babies are both okay. Good luck with your repairs/improvements. I’d suggest living in the new RV for a few weeks before making any major interior changes. I enjoy your videos so much, that I watch others first. Just saving the best for last.

    Your gear fix: If push comes to shove, mechanically squeeze the gap closed in the gear ensuring that the center square is no longer distorted, fill all the openings in the gear with a good epoxy filler. As long as the lugs stay intact, that gear should then last you a lifetime. Another idea, room and clearances permitting, would be to bolt round plates to both sides of the gear with a new square opening through both plates. Either fix would outlast the original plastic gear. Aside from that, we love your show, never, ever boring!

    According to Einstein's theory, time is relative. Your microwave could be traveling closer to the speed of light and therefore time slows down in the microwave. Or, there could be a gravitational disturbance somewhere in your RV. Possibly a mini black hole behind the slide out, that's why Tara got stuck.

    You can take the gear to a machine shop and ask if they can create a CNC version of it or you can take it to someone who scans objects for 3d printing and then have them print it. Another option is the company in AZ that replaces slide hardware, I think it is Vroom Slide Systems.

    Electronic clocks run off a 5-5-5 timer chip. There is a clock input on that chip, if the input is off, that will throw off the time. Like someone else mentioned, it's a possible input from the generator issue. Not saying the generator is bad but the HZ(Hertz) might be coming in at 50 instead of 60.

    As a temporary fix you could force the plastic back into shape and pour "window weld" into all the open spots around the center hole, it would make it really rigid and not able to skip on the shaft until you can find new pieces.

    Look for a local fab shop in your area and see if they can make you an aluminum gear to replace the cracked plastic one (would possibly be a worry though that if something jammed up it could break other components or the motor) or find a local 3d print shop to make you one. Probably the most affordable and easiest options.

    Eric, with your microwave it could be your generator. If it puts our a modified sine wave that could affect the timing chip in the control panel of your microwave. A pure sine wave inverter could solve the problem.Eric a quick fix might be to plug your microwave into a power conditioner, and see if that fixes it.

    My 2005 Ford F250 Super Duty had the V10 and 150,000 miles without a single issue. Be sure to change the spark plugs before the recommended 100,000 miles because there are issues with the plugs seizing in the block and causing issues for the mechanic if you wait too long.

  • @danrambow7721

    Getting a new gear, 3d printed sounds like a great idea. You could have one machined out of aluminum too, but then you have no margin of error if things get jammed. The plastic gear will shear before destroying the motor. Being the old engineer I am, I would straighten out the deformed part of the gear, fashion a sheet metal square sheath to span across the inside of the hole where broken, and then fill each void around the hole with 6000psi JB Weld epoxy. But I like fixing problems the hard way. If you can't solve the clock on the microwave easily, you could print out a conversion chart for real minutes to your microwave minutes and then just punch it the right value. Won't be long before you remember them all. i.e. 3 minutes real might be 2.4 minutes on your microwave.

    Love the new RV! I think even if you manage to find a replacement gear... I think your goal should be to eventually switch out the mechanism for something more common. Those slides just seem to break on everyone that I've ever seen had one and you won't want to have to continually deal with that. If I'm ever able to do traveling as I wish when I retire I have resolved to NOT get anything with a slide for that reason. As it will just be me I won't need extra space anyway. So I want a small RV or perhaps even a van conversion as they seem to have fewer issues with things like roof leaks. It's just sad that a professionally converted van is so expensive. I can do some work myself... but I'm not fooling myself that I'm some great carpenter, plumber, electrician, etc.

    Lol I had a travel trailer once that had a manual slide. You stuck a crank rod into a hole on the outside and hand cranked the slide. And yes, the drive gear was wearing to the point it would slide out on hard right corners until I made a hard left to push it back in.
    I'm still struggling with my Onan generator issues to the point I bought a R4000 solar generator that has the 30A RV socket and 12 other outputs. I have 600W of solar on the roof and it came with 400W portable panels. I'm tired of wrenching on the Onan, if this pans out and I never figure out the generator it's getting the boot.

    A comment for the youtube algorithm. If you are running the microwave on your generator maybe the generator needs some voltage or hertz adjustment to get the timer correct. Thanks for the videos.

  • @lyfandeth
    @lyfandeth 7 месяцев назад

    I'd vote with Tom, that the frequency out of your generator is wrong. Fast test, see if the microwave keeps time on shore power. It could be that the micowave is not built for 60 Hz, or the generator is not putting out 60Hz. If the generator is the problem, it can ruin anything running on it. A lot of multimeters can show frequency. The only other places I can guess are a generator shop, or a local electrical lineman (or depot) because many of them will have access to a frequency tester.

    Just a crazy idea Eric. If you ca nt find that slideout plastic part that's cracked do you think you could find a way to 3D print the part? Just a thought. Sucks to find the "surprises" after you buy the Rv. Hopefully it all works out for you.

    If you can't find a replacement gear, someone with a 3d printer could print a new gear if you pull the good one so measurements can be taken. Another option would be to use a dremel/other rotary or reciprocating tool to remove all of the inner material and fabricate a round block with a square hole with a press fit to go in the center and epoxy it in.

    Looks like you already found a possible solution to your gear problem. I'd go with the metal one over the 3d printed one. ABS is a good material, but it will just wear out like the original did. Metal one might last a while longer, maybe even the whole time you own the RV. Safe travels!

    Eric you could have that gear either 3d printed or even go to a machine shop and have two made. I run a forklift company and it is very hard to find older forklift parts so we have to get them made. Like the Bigfoot brand, they were well made for their day. Glad Tara is okay. We just got a new kitty that at the moment likes to hide up in our dash. Kind of worried that he might chew the wires and hurt himself.

As for the gear what about that place in Washington that sells used parts from all sorts of RVs, the one you used to go get parts from when you were working on your RV? they might have it.

    Take the broken gear to any machine shop and have them make two - make out of aluminum bar stock they can copy the dimensions off the old gear - maybe cost’s about $200-$300 for both pcs.

    Chances are, the Hertz is not correct on your genset, it is most probably around 55-56 which will cause your clock to slow down, it should be 60.
    As for the gear, if you can’t find one, maybe a machine shop can make something that will work-fit the motor.
    If not, clean it up well, run some tie-wire to strengthen the gear, then epoxy it with enough to strengthen the gear and not put any on the gear face itself. I bet that will work.

    Eric, I know you don’t want to hear this, but as others have said it’s almost for sure related to generator. Not a difficult adjustment. A way to prove it would be to plug into shore power and run the same test with your phone timer. If problem is NOT solved it’s the microwave (probably power supply). Cheers and Happy New Year 🎉

    If you can find RV's that have the parts in a junk yard and get additional parts there for the future as well? Some type of parts store brick and mortar or online? There's a store local here in Pennsylvania called Fastenal that specializes in industrial fastener's. That or you might have to have something remade... redone to change the opening-closing mechanism to something more modern so can get parts for it? Sounds expensive maybe but might be doable.

  • @athiker7209

    Try plugging into shore power and check the timer. Maybe the the frequency or RPM of the generator needs to be adjusted. Wouldn't that be odd if it was set for Europe, at 50 cycles per second!??
