Great video Brandon!your videos are so helpful!can you give me some guidance on part numbers for replacing all my seals in the lower unit on a 1982 115 hp Johnson. There is oil leaking by the propeller so I want to replace all the seals. Thanks so much.Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey, this video was perfect for me 3 yrs ago when changing my water pump. Unfortunately, for me the most difficult part of the job was reassembly of the shift pin bolt. I would appreciate any advice for how to hold the mechanism and shaft in alignment when trying to reinstall the bolt. Please help! I have to pull the unit again because of major water leak.
Nice video. Problem with a 1982 v4 there are like 4 hoses for the fuel that block that shift linkage screw. Even with the carbs off it is very hard to feel and see.
i would love a reinstall lower unit video, i have the 85 hp motor like this one with two pick up tubes a dont see how to get them lined up properly to install the lower unit correctly, you cant see them when installing the lower unit.
Very good. I have a 77 115hp so the same. It's got a bloody wasp nest in the exhaust and won't start haha. Probably wouldn't hurt to check out the water pump etc anyway. Very helpful video.
Great Video! Would the process for removing the lower unit on a 1979 115 hp Evinrude be the same? I need to replace the water pump but I am having second thoughts about doing it myself. It seems pretty basic, but there are some bolts in funky places that require some attachments that I would have to get before I tried it.
Man I’m having trouble reinstalling shift rod on my Johnson 115. So when I get shift rod set In proper spot, when I got to push lever back into spot it opens up and won’t stay seated. I loosened the screw on top of shift lever thinking it will let it slide home but it keeps separating and opening up letting shift rod out. Any advice would be helpful
Hi Brendon, I have a 1975 Johnson 70 hp pre telltale. How can I tell if it’s pumping water. I have it hooked to ear muffs and don’t see a lot of water coming out the exhaust holes just below the cowl. If I pull the lower unit to put new water pump on, can you show me what to disconnect for shift lever, I’ve watched your other videos and how you disconnect lever but not sure if it applies to a 1975 motor
Hi there. I have a 1977 evinrude 115 (i guess is the equivalent of the Johnson). Apparently the guy I bought it from, made some modifications to the lower unit. I can't post a picture here but I wonder if you'd be willing to help me out? I cant find anything else on the internet or i wouldn't bother you. It looks like he might have drilled additional holes near the water outlet holes (i think - or maybe its the exhaust)? I dont understand why he'd do that. He did put a custom plate over the holes to quiet it down, but now i have thick tar-like oil blowing past that custom plate. Its really all a mystery to me. Can you assist at all? I'd really appreciate it. (the guy i bought it from was a marine engine mechanic)
Spot on remova helped me with the 120hp, unfortunately mine was super tight and when I removed it the drive shaft remained behind inside the engine. Heaps of salt residue and sand, hate to think whats keeping the drive shaft in the engine block
I have a late 70'S early 80's Johnson 88 HP outboard. I have located the linkage, but either there is no bolt, or the previous owner broke off the head. Any suggestions that might help?
Have you tried duct tape. Jk get a new bolt kind of a special bolt might suck to find. There’s an OEM Johnson website that’s super expensive but they MIGHT have what you need. Got excited when I found the website and they had an illustrated parts breakdown and each item was numbered and had a corresponding part number but half of them are not in stock or INSANELY expensive. I’m a mechanic by trade and hobby and bought a boat thinking I could “mechanic special” it and get a good deal but….
I have the omc 140 and its almost the same design I have a bolt there though and the second I touched it the bolt head fell off I didn't even get pressure onto it
Do you have any idea how to disconnect the shift shaft on an 82 90 hp Evinrude? I can't find anything that is helpful. I think I can see the bolt pin, but not sure how to get to it.
Hey! It would be amazing if somebody could give me some advise. Here is my problem: I have a 2011 Evinrude e tech 25hp. It is a 20” shaft, and was used in salt water. In a rush, I snapped off two of 6 lower unit bolts. I disconnected the shift lineage behind the intake plates. The lower unit doesn’t budge more than 1mm barley. I need to replace the water pump and seals. I’ve tried some heat but I don’t want to burn off my paint. What should I do? Am I missing a linkage under the cowling? Thankyou so much I need help.
Looks like who ever worked on my outboard put the pin/screw in from the other side, having a hard time trying to get to it. Or the head of it broke off.
Brandon's Garage wow thanks for the quick reply. I have a 1988 johnson 90 V4 VRO. When I'm looking at the engine on the side that your screw/pin is I do not see the head of it. And trying to access it on the other side I can not even see it due to all the wires in the way. I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove the wires. I do not want to remove the carbs until I can find replacement gaskets for them.
So, yours is similar, but a bit different. Yours uses a "clamping" style. Look at the shift rod connector, you'll see a bolt/screw. Pull that off. Then, you can separate the 2 halves. Do a google image search of part number 0395588, and you'll get an idea of what it is.

@@BrandonsGarage Thank you so much man!Really APPRECIATED!👍
So that part number is the seal kit I need for the lower unit?
@@BrandonsGarage help ww cant get the shift shaft to shift gears when we put lower back in.
Awesome video and you helped me immensley by showing how to remove the shift linkage with great detail. Thanks!

looking at alot of videos to find pin. your is very helpful thank you very much.
Thank you sir for uploading this.
Thanks

Oh actually mine doesn't have a removable bolt. It has a rivet style pin through the linkage. Can't see any way to remove it.
Andy G I have the same motor, have you figured out how to get it off?
How do you get the top end of foot apart
Thank you so much sir
is this the v4 seahorse? is there any difference? what shop manual do you recommend for this motor

Brandon are available for questions about same style motor? Bought with a power trim that doesn’t seem like it’s the right one? Thanks

whats the reason for putting it into reverse prior to removing pin and lower unit?
Better access to the screw.
wheres your donation tab , keep these videos coming your a life saver for many folks with old school motors.
ive got the same motor but a 150 there is zero information on it this looks very similar. should help thanks

Remove the plate under the carbs. It makes it easier to get to that shift rod bolt. IMO two person job. My son helped.

Driveshaft break?
Brandon,
Is the johnson 150hp v6 vro just like this video?
Depends on the year, but yes, mostly.
would this process be the same on a 1978 Evinrude motor?
Well this is a 1978 engine, so yes.
Unless you have something smaller than 40 HP, its the same.
Would the process be the same on a V6 gt 200? About to remove mine. Started the process yesterday and have since hit a wall
You are awesome 👏!!

Which bolt was it?
the shift linkage retaining bolt I'm about to go extract it now
o and thanks for the vid I was worried I was doin sumthin wrong
Maybe get some vice grips on the back, and twist it all the way out?
it snapped flush it's all good though I've got the snap on tap n die set for the threads and their reverse drill bit and extractor set so il be good

Did u figuire it out, I have a 83 115tlcte and I'm having trouble figuring it out
Thank you , just saved me a morning of struggling to get that b***dy gear shift bolt out
watch the 85 HP lower service video, it show you how to get it back in.
cool! will do thanks

My little screw holding shifter won’t come out and of course I can’t get plyers in there. I got it loose so maybe I’ll try a magnet...
It did not work for me

Are you sure there is a pin? what engine do you have?

Brandon's Garage I sincerely appreciate your reply. When I get home this evening I am going to take a look at it. 👍
It’s so unbelievable that I have to remove carburetors to change a water pump. That little linkage screw is the devil.
You dont have to, just easier, sometimes.
Sometimes its even worse that in this video.
