  • The Edge of Night ended its long run on December 28, 1984. This is the closing credits to show number 7420 as it aired on ABC TV. Thankfully ABC did not ruin the music by airing an over the credits promo. This episode was taped on December 13, 1984. Video remains the property of Proctor & Gamble Productions, all rights reserved.

Almost 27 years and I STILL haven't gotten over the demise of the greatest television show of my lifetime . . . And in answer to timhomer2009, yes, the lovely and elegant Lois Kibbee was in Caddyshack.

I never had a chance to watch "The Edge Of Night", but it seems like it was an outstanding series! I have read over the years that it was basically a daytime version of "Perry Mason" (when it was on radio), and that it was the first soap opera to have a large amount of male viewers! It would be nice if the remaining episodes were placed into syndication or available on DVD!

This final show aired three days after Christmas 1984. WABC-TV (channel 7) usually had this until the very end. It was on around 4 PM before another non-network show was on 3 years after the "4:30 Movie" was cancelled in 1981. Channel 7 in NYC had so many changes after the show ended.

Unfortunately, only 106 ABC affiliates were the only ones that stuck with the soap in its final days. The majority that pre-empted it, including WISN/Milwaukee, WTAE/Pittsburgh and even WCVB/Boston, decided to air something else in the 4PM/3PM slot, which some saw as a death bed for any network show, which led to ABC giving up the the final half-hour back to its affiliates after EON's cancellation.

I'm thinking WSB Atlanta stuck with Edge to the bitter end. I know Edge aired on three different stations over the years: WAGA (the CBS years), WXIA (ABC from 1975 until the station switched to NBC in 1980), and WSB (September 1980-end, I think, although then-independent WATL may have run the final months).

Would be neat to see Procter & Gamble partner with a infomercial producer (like Guthy Renker) do a "Best of Daytime Soaps" on DVD/Blu-ray, classic episodes and scenes from favorite P&G soaps, including EON, SFT, AW, ATWT, and GL... or one of the sub-channel networks (like MeTV, COZI, Antenna TV, etc.) air reruns of surviving episodes in what they could bill as "Soap Rewind" or "Love In The Afternoon Rewind".

Question... it sounds like the theme actually hit its natural ending point (it wasn't on any kind of a "loop")... on any show where a pre-recorded closing theme reaches its end point before the credit roll is finished, do they just restart the music from the beginning, or do we just hear silence for the remainder of the credits?

I would think The Edge of Night had somewhat of a mystery theme to it, almost similar to Dark Shadows, even though both shows were not in any way related. A lot of our favorite daytime soaps have went away. With the recent announcement of Megyn Kelly going to NBC, I certainly hope that NBC doesn't touch Days of our Lives. We've got more than enough cheap talk shows, game shows, courtroom shows, and tabloid-gossip and viral video shows on the air, when all us soap fans want is stories.
Back in the old days, ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates have had a thing for preempting network shows, including soaps. ABC: Early years of One Life to Live was preempted, much like the last 9 years of The Edge of Night was preempted. OLTL enjoyed 44 years on the air, and was getting better when it ended. Ryan’s Hope was another heavily preempted ABC soap. Sacramento market didn't carry Loving/The City and Port Charles. CBS: Seattle didn't air Capitol, and the early seasons of The Bold & the Beautiful. Sacramento dropped Guiding Light in 1992 like a hot potato. New York started the practice in 1993 of airing GL on a day late schedule at 10AM, taking it out of its 3PM slot. NBC: For a number of years, Boston and Sacramento didn't air Another World... Sacramento, along with San Francisco would pull AW in its last year or 2 on the air. Last 4 years of Search for Tomorrow was preempted.

I was surprised when As the World Turns and All My Children were axed. I can say that I was not shocked by Guiding Light and One Life to Live being canceled. GL had been in trouble for years. OLTL stayed only cause of the time slot between the more popular soaps AMC and GH

I do not watch Days of our lives but the soap is endangered of being cancelled I have seen their latest numbers they are as low as Guiding light during their final days and Days of are live is renewed until September 2018 if they cannot get their numbers up Nbc will not renew Days and cancel days. In 2009 Guiding light according to Wikipedia was getting 1.6 in daytime ratings and was dead last in the Nielsons Days of our live ended last season as low in the Nielsons at 1.6 if the ratings do not improve a whole lot Nbc will not renew Days and pull the plug on the long running program.
