My favorite years for the opening were '77-'80. Around that time the only opening title more eerie than Edge's was In Search Of. And after that, Tales From the Darkside used that same color to negative transition with the freaky music and it was amazing. Totally agree with you!

    • @hotgritz4sho
      @hotgritz4sho Год назад +4

Thank God. I thought I was the one scared out of my mind but this intro theme. I loved it tho. It was familiar and eerie. It definitely set the oftentimes creepy and mysterious tone of the soap just as much as the “Dark Shadows” theme song did to help convey its distinctly gothic noir vibe.

It's totally crazy to see these comments that mirrors my feelings of how eerie, and spooky the opening credits of TEON was. My Grandmother loved her "Stories" as she would call it. But TEON was certainly one of her favorites. She would make breakfast and a sweet cup of coffee as we would watch her Stories.

OMG! That 1977-1980 version. There were only two opening sequences that ran more chills down my spine and they were Tales From the Darkside and In Search Of. I used to cling like static to my grandmom's arm when this started up and beg her to turn it off, only to be right there the next day doing it again! Great memories!

I didn't like it when they discarded the melancholy noir-jazz 1977 theme for the 1980 dance-club theme, but I'm pretty sure I would have just loathed that wretched samba theme they used at the very end had I still been watching.

One of the prettiest theme musics ever added to a soap. As much as the 80s stuff was the "malaise era" as has been said about the cars of the decade, this one definitely had a sort if hypnotic charm that belies some of the emptiness of feeling I get from much of today's content, although still sometimes good every so often. The original theme music, and content, was evolution of script and music over time, having a certain sort of respect for its origins, or traditional trademarks. This viewpoint isn't just for soaps, but media in general.

That was Geraldine Whitney (and later Saxon), played by the late, great Lois Kibbie. She was AWESOME, and definitely DIDN'T take any sh*t from anyone. A very similar character to Kay Chancellor on Y&R in many ways.

  • @michailtakach

Nobody could say EON didn’t try to keep up with the times… although I’ll agree those final opening credits were really a bit 80s… personally I love the terrifying 1980-1983 rendition, with intense music, somber characters, and an overwhelming sense of doom and dread. Even as a child, I was convinced that Monticello was the most dangerous city in America, since every character on this series seemed to be struggling just to stay alive. You definitely didn’t want to get too attached to anyone on this show, except maybe Raven Whitney, as they’d be killed off in the most terrifying ways imaginable. I’m really surprised EON isn’t still with us today, and that nobody’s attempted a revival, because it established the whole “law & order” tone that rules TV today. Hokey soap storylines layered on, just for kicks.

That's what they were known as in The African American Community. I told UK Soap fans and they laughed. UK Soaps are so 180% from their UK Counterparts. They are more Blue Collar. You could put a Family like The Ryans on Ryan's Hope or The Coopers on Guiding Light on Coronation Street and Eastenders and they would fit in. Alot of the folks own or work in Cafes or Bars or even Garage Mechanics.

I think it was the only Proctor & Gamble Soap that was broadcasted on ABC back in the day. This would have been perfect as an Opening Sequence on The UK Soap Opera EastEnders that recently celebrated it's 35th Anniversary. Two other Soaps also celebrated their Anniversaries. Coronation Street (60 Years) which now surpasses Guiding Light as the Longest Running Televised Soap Opera on TV, as well as Hollyoaks which celebrates 25 Years. In Australia Neighbors also celebrates 35 Years which was created by Reg Watson who created the "Original" Prisoner Cell Block H that was remade as "Wentworth."

I remember the characters of Sky and Raven being like a Nick and Nora Charles/Hart to Hart supercouple getting involved and solving crimes/mysteries. Current daytime soap writers need to take page or two from the way storylines/characters used to be written. Action. adventure, romance, love themes, out on location, laughter, heartache/break without dragging it out at a slow burn with no real/exciting pay off by the conclusion.

@publicitypunk there were definitely some fun mishaps when soaps were still broadcast live. My all-time favourite near-miss involved ATWT, when Lisa was supposed to be pregnant, and the organist screwed up and played the "fade-to-commercial" music by mistake, and Eileen Fulton, assuming they were off the air, almost pulled the pillow out from under her blouse, right on-camera.

This would make a good title for a mystery anthology.

When I was little that early 1977-1980 one used to scare me. I thought this was a horror show because the music was so spooky

That's Joel Crothers of Dark Shadows. The other guy was an adult film star. Swear.

On the Irish Soap Opera Fair City, there's a Character named Larkin. So Many Folks from the UK are either on Soaps or Pop Stars. Some of them would have been fantastic on US Soaps as an European Relative.

Yes, I recall in Connecticut it was on ABC, but only on the New York affiliate, Channel 7 at 4:00 right after General Hospital. I don't know what they had on Channel 8. PM Magazine or something

"The Edge Of Night" disappeared from the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida area in September of 1977. WLCY-TV 10 decided to start airing old movies each weekday at 4:00 PM.

ABC didn't air The Edge Of Night in the best timeslot to begin with. Our affiliate,WVII-TV in Bangor,Maine, stopped airing it just a few years prior to its cancellation.

If they revived this show with attention to good acting this show could be a powerhouse. Imagine if they hired writers who really know how to craft good stories with interesting characters like EDGE in its heyday. General Hospital has done quite well with its mob stories. Air the new version with the C&B theme and you could wipe away much of the lame competition.

marvelous montage but was how does UK figure into it? Was this shown in the UK also? Wow!
Also how about the version where the man is singing "seems as tho' our harmonies are...etcetc"
And the version that was an ersatz 40's-big-band sound that was a bust? Just keepin ya on your toes......

I can't help it though. Every time I see her, I think back to her shower scene in Caddyshack when she says, "Elihu? Would you come and loofah my stretchmarks?"

@RadioFreeSpike Close resemblance, but the actor is Joel Crothers, who starred in several New York based soaps, including "Dark Shadows". He passed away from complications due to AIDS about a year or so after "Edge" was cancelled.
