My best friend bought a 1987 A70 when we were 16 years old. It was his first car. We had some amazing memories just cruising in this pearl white beauty with the burgundy interior. We even managed to stuff a full sized surf board inside for our senior beach week when we graduated high school. Over 20 years later he still owns this car as well as a 1986.5 with a 1jz swap. His car is so clean it was even featured in the North American promo commercial for the mark 5 a couple years ago since he’s kept it meticulously stock and clean. As a result of his continued passion for these cars and this era of Japanese classics he now owns his own custom car shop specializing in mkiii and mkiv Supra builds. So many many good times and a lifetime of friendship built cruising in and wrenching on this car. 👏🏼🔥🏎️
I owned one of these magnificent rides (1988 Supra Turbo with the 3.0 liter 7M-GTE engine) and the engine is bulletproof when you add an intercooler and beefier radiator (Had a GReddy Intercooler kit). The real reason this Supra didn't get the respect it deserve was because it was heavier than it's predecessor, and at the time no 4 wheel steering nor AWD which would have made this car a true Dragonslayer. Also, it was marketed as a GT (Gran Turismo/Grand Touring) and not a true all out sports car. Despite having a world class suspension and powerful and capable engine. This car was built for high speed, long distance, comfortable cruising. Nothing inherently wrong with that as many GT machines from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and others give you the best of both worlds (speed and comfort). But back in the 80s it was comfort or speed. Rarely both. Even Porsches were real butt busters as well. That and "turbo lag" of the time limited how fast you got that mill to give you it's power. So to summarize, the MK3 Supra was WAY ahead of its time and a tantalizing look into what cars would become. And if you want one? They are well worth the effort!! But a diet is in order, especially the 80s MK3. Lighter hatch glass, carbon Targa roof, a good aero kit and a host of engine mods (cold air intake, intercooler, stronger twin turbos, better exhaust) and you have an awesome alternative to the extremely pricey 240/260/280/300/350z series, or the later RX-7s.
This was my first car when I was 18 yo! I only got 2500USD, 86 MK3 Supra was the only rear wheel drive Japanese car that was available on autotrader at the time in Los Angeles back in 2006. As someone that is originally from Japan I was only looking to buy Japanese rear wheel drive car. I lowered, installed nicer intake/exhaust system... racing with other cars on 10FW then blowed the headgasket :(... Poor international student couldn't afford engine rebuild so that was sold to a gentle man who works at Toyota dealer ship for 20 years, and he said "Im gone restore it, and this gone be my son's first car". Good memories!
I'm 56 and picked one of these up 8 years ago for 5K, when these came out when I was young I was gobsmacked and absolutely loved the style, I think they'll go through the roof in value.
About 30 years ago I had a black 88 Supra with tan leather interior, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that car. To my eyes it looked amazing inside and out. For the time period the interior was like a space ship, and even some people commented just that when I had them as passengers, especially at night. The car was so smooth. The ride quality was just fantastic. Just a perfect balance of ride quality and handling as a GT-cruiser type vehicle. It also was quite ballsy for the time period. I remember it having a good amount of torque. It was the perfect car for me at the time. Fantastic looks, smooth, comfortable, luxurious, relatively fast, and very reliable. Unfortunately I wound up wrecking it being young and dumb, after having too many drunks. I've had MANY vehicles since then, but that still remains one of my favorite most enjoyed vehicles, possibly at the top of the list. And for the record, I still think they look fantastic to this day. I've debated getting another one for nostalgia's sake.
89 white package was my first car & still have her ❤. Its not talked about because the notorious bhg issue. Can be easily fixed, even prevented but not many are mechanically inclined to fix the thing themselves.
This was my very first car! I had a dark red 1987 one. It was a gift from my uncle when I was 16. The head gasket failed and the car would dump white smoke everywhere. My popz took it to a shop to get fixed, and the shop never really worked on it. They wanted 3 grand for a new engine! They kept storing the car in different places, including the parking lot of a public library. The police came to our house asking about that. Eventually the shop moved away (more like disappeared), and they took my car with them. My dad reported it as stolen, but we never saw it again. I had a friend who wanted to turn it into a full-blown race car. I wish we had sold it to him instead. Actually I wish I still had it for myself. Never had a car as good as this one. I love the 4th-gen Supra (I wanted to get one after I lost the 3rd-gen but my parents were like HELLS NAW), but it does sadden me that no one ever talks about the 3rd-gen Supra. Such a wonderful fucking car.
The 3rd gen Toyota Supra A70 is the one that sold the most among the other generations ! Success of a car is it's sale numbers.. It's not forgotten and it's legacy is on the highest level at the moment. The 1st model to get turbo and twin turbo engines. Sport roofs (targa top), Big 8" inch diff, most robust 5speed transmission (R154) , Torsen differential technology, JZ motor options (unfortunately Japan market only), 1st JDM car ever with ABS lock brakes, Electronic damper suspension, heated seats, automatic digital control, amazing interior, very comfortable, and quality at it's best! Used in Rallye Group A, drifting, drag competition, on-line game platforms, is the first true GT car ever made. In Japan they call it the Japanese Muscle car! The Supra mk3 turbo A edition model, was the most powerful car in 1988 in Japan with 270hp. JZ swap it, put some coil overs, some BBK, and some nice wheels and you got the best Supra ever built ❤
I bought an '88 Turbo, 5spd in '90 and it was my daily driver for 10 years until I lost the head gasket with about 150k miles on it. Still on the original clutch too. Loved that car... The cloth front seats were the most comfortable seats I have ever experienced and the cloth didn't fall apart like the leather ones do... Loved the interior and exterior look of that car and how smooth the engine ran... Until it had about 125k miles on it. You couldn't tell the engine was running unless you looked at the tachometer!
Had an '89 Turbo. Passed it down to my son. He eventually sold it to a cousin. The cousin eventually sold it after 25 years in the family. Last I heard, it was still going strong.
i didnt forget. Back in 2002 my first car was a black 87 turbo hardtop manual with 91k miles... wish I still had it. I think about this model quite often
I had one of these and the damn thing killed me with the head gasket issues, still one of my favorite cars I've ever owned. At the time I didn't understand what was going on with it, that I needed to check the entire cooling system not just the head gasket.
i got my 1988 supra love it so much, there's no videos online about it like at all, and every time you see one its most definitely a 1 of 1 cause its never talked about or seen
1979 Toyota supra what a wonderful vehicle I had a friend that had one out the show room floor completely loaded. He has that car still today has had it redone rebuilt redone many times over and over. It’s just as beautiful it was the day it was created on the showroom floor.
I’m a Benz AMG guy. But this has always been my favorite Supra. I know everyone likes the next gen. But that jelly bean styling never did it for me. This one always had “the look”. Just a great looking car. Long live the Mark 3 Soup!!
I love the mk3 supra! I had a 87 7mgte when I was younger with tons of issues doing what I could to keep it going but couldn't afford it ☹️ I wish I could go back in time to tell myself to never get rid of it! I'll always remember all the good times! I really hope i can get another one day 🤞
The Supra is still admired and sought after. I own a 1986 Supra. I drive it every week. I get offers to buy it almost daily. It is not for sale, however. But if it were, it would sell quickly.
I had a 1987 Supra Turbo with Eibach lowering springs and Tokico struts that worked with the factory suspension computer, plus a modified intake, an HRS steel head gasket, boost control/ignition + fuel mods and a 3" exhaust making 350 RWHP. Loved that car. I owned it for 13 years. The rear subframe was a problem on high boost cars with the bridge over the differential tearing in half from too much torque.
These are remarkable car's once you have R&D how much you're willing to do with them. My Mk3 2jz w/ GR T-56 Magnum $wap. Fully restored front to back top to bottom. 💯😎🏁
I pined after this car for years when I was a teenager who couldn’t afford one. I absolutely love the look of the later models. Looks great to this day.
It's crazy to think that my Kia 1.6 turbo has similar power ratings as the old 7MGTE. Back then, i would have laughed at the notion. The technical advancements are amazing.
I bought my 89 Supra na on valentines day in 94...had a great relationship for 10 years. Then bought a 1st Gen Gs300 which still have to this day. But the Supra with the 5 speed felt beefy and always had a presence on the road. People would leave me their number on the windshield to let them know when I was going to sell it
The Mark 3 is a great car. I remember seeing one of these in the lot in 1992, just as Toyota was about to shift to the Mark 4. It has that look like the curves of the 90s are waiting to be born. It's flat, wide, low, and long. A clean example with a post-2000 twin turbo 1JZ-GTE would slay all day and pull tail all night.
Buying an 88' MK3 in 2021 was the best purchase I've ever made. The car looks like nothing else on the road and it gets a massive amount of attention. Purely stock, it's a pretty dated car with huge amounts of bodyroll and ride height. Lowering her on FA 500 coilovers, beefy front swaybar and rear strutbrace, she is now the best handling car I've ever driven. The driving experience is as raw and fun as it gets. Far and away the best car interior I've ever seen and also has the most comfortable seats I've ever used. I think people only actually woke up to this car the last three years as the prices have spiked and even since I bought it, parts prices have doubled. By the end of the decade I think it will be considered an actual classic.
I took had a 88, turbo, 5spd, steel roof, burgundy cloth interior. Bought it in 90 with 45k miles on it for 10.5k... Loved that car, most comfortable drivers seat I have ever been in (and I been in plenty of Bentley's, Rolls Royce's, newer Lexus's, Mercedes, even a Maybach... None of them had a driver's seat that fit me so well and was so comfortable. Granted I am a small guy, but.... Drove it for 10 years without much trouble until finally loosing the head gasket at around 150k miles and overheating it. Was still on the original clutch! Maybe 3rd or 4th set of brake pads! Until it had about 125k miles on it, you couldn't tell if the engine was idling or not inside the car unless you looked at the tach. Many times I thought it stalled at a red light and almost panicked until looking at the tach!
@@DaveGringo Sad to hear about the headgasket, but they all will go. Since yours blew at 150K. I'm hoping since mine was replaced at around 90K and it's 117K now that I'll have it for a looong time. Glad you agree about the seats. They are really something special.
Being a kid in the early 00s, all I ever saw was "THE" Supra and I always liked it, but not as much as the NSX or RX7. But then I saw this car like a month ago for the first time and I've been OBSESSED with it ever since. Great looking car. It kinda looks like a Japanese muscle car to me.
There’s something about the MKIII Supra. It’s the ultimate 80s JDM car for me. The ae86 is cool and all the the late 1980s supra has electro beat theme music in my head.
I had an 1986.5 Supra non turbo. That was the absolute favorite car I’ve owned. It was simply a nice car. It wasn’t super fast. But I loved the ride. It was totaled when a driver turned too sharp and knocked the front end crooked. 😢😢 . The only major problem I had with it was the head gasket at around 120,000 miles. It never ran hot. And the head was not warped at all. I simply replaced the gasket and properly torqued the head bolts and drove it until the aforementioned accident at 180,000 miles.
I do love the mk3, we had one back in the day and it was F ing great car, ( not with the US spec rear lights ) looking for one now, not the NA one but the turbo one. ❤
Long before the fast and furious made the supra popular this thing thing awesome specs for its day. What a great design. I loved seeing this at the Los Angeles auto show when i was 15
Honestly, if you look into this generation of Supra you'll understand why it's so overshadowed. The 7M-GTE engine had a lot of little teething problems which made it a lot more of a hassle to maintain and push out more power than the 2jz engine, I've been trying to scoop one up but as I'm reading more and more on forums you'll find out that even in its stock form it's a car for people that want to spend time working on their car regularly. Unlike the 4th gen which if you keep it relatively stock, is going to be a lot more reliable and dependable. Despite that I hope to own one sooner or later if I bump into the right and yes, they're underrated...but, I'm also not suprised they're not as appreciated as the later generation. It's not all hurr durr fast & furious, there's legit reasons why the 4th gen is just a better car overall
Had one for a few years sad someone decided to self delete by jumping from a bridge and i lost it and got ptsd for a few years after but they are great cars and other then its end i had nothing but good memories of mine.
Always wanted to put a 3sgt in one of these they are so heavy and this would help a lot plus all the 90's legend supras in jgtc mk4 were not 2j they were 500 hp 3sgt swapped
the mk3 supra was my favourite car for a REALLY long time, and i agree with it being underrated. I currently admire the Porsche 911 carrera rsr 2.8 and 3,0
My buddy Robo has one of these In Nashville. It's his baby and he's put alot of love into it. It got stolen but the MK3 gods smiled upon him and it was returned. To both of or happyness hell, I like riding in the thing!
I've been wanting a mk3 supra ever since I first saw it but I'm a highschool student eith a part time job and seeing these go for an average of 10-15k crushed me
not forgotten at all the 70s and 80s racers folks are alive and well it is still well known and remembered and sought after just not be someone who is 19 years old but someone older, bet you its still not forgotten but ya written the title in a way to provoke comments LOL smart smart....
Its not forgotten, theres one in my garage. Saved it from the junkyard after it blew an engine, now its got a 2jz. I hear the mk3s called "cope cars" all the time, and that may be true for some people, but its really a time capsule of a jdm grand tourer. Its shockingly light on its feet and goes 85 mph without you even knowing it. Its a shame its got 80s engines tech with the 7m since the 1jz wasnt released in the US, and only a 5 speed, that really holds it back.
You Never see squat about This model ..Never talked about never mentioned in JDM forums or a Big Movie .. Oh wait there is this video ..
not much in the young circle
This car with a 2JZ swap would be peak TRD. No GR, no BMW sticker swap, no weird looking curves and fake vents, no movie star inflated pricing, just pure sleek ground roots JDM mastery!
People sleep on the Soarer too. I love the pre-Lexus Soarer.
I'm surrounded by them in upstate NY. I know at least 5 people with one.
@@anydaynow01 you don't even need a JZ swap. the normal 7M is an absolute monster once the headgasket gets torqued to proper specs

Ι totally agree !❤
My first ever car in Real life and in Gran Turismo 2.
Definitely not forgotten, my1.5JZ Mk3 Supra turns heads when ppl hear it coming
Being a kid in the early 00s, all I ever saw was "THE" Supra and I always liked it, but not as much as the NSX or RX7. But then I saw this car like a month ago for the first time and I've been OBSESSED with it ever since. Great looking car. It kinda looks like a Japanese muscle car to me.
the black car with the bronze TE37 in the thumbnail is fire
Not forgotten just overshadowed by the MK4. Just like the Z32 is overshadowed by the Skyline.
What a gorgeous car.
I havent forgotten it. I still dream to own 9ne.
I'm sold, I'm buying the mk3 supra in my lifetime.
I still have the 96 Supra turbo !!!! 76,000 miles
I do love the mk3, we had one back in the day and it was F ing great car, ( not with the US spec rear lights ) looking for one now, not the NA one but the turbo one. ❤
Had a mk3 supra 3.0 Turbo.. bloody great car.. well other than it liking to kill bottom ends.. but one of the best looking Supras for sure
My favorite gen Supra
Long before the fast and furious made the supra popular this thing thing awesome specs for its day. What a great design. I loved seeing this at the Los Angeles auto show when i was 15
Please have less people like this ride so i can afford it😢
Ofc it's a legend, the 90s editions were just ultimate. So this is still the main game.
Another undermentioned is the Mitsubishi Quest .
I love the A70. So much i picked up two of em.
I miss mine . Wish I still had it.
It's not all hurr durr fast & furious, there's legit reasons why the 4th gen is just a better car overall
never forgotten. if i could get this and a couple of other 80s japanese car, oh boy ! lol. they're rare now sadly
My favorite supra
I want a Supra Mark 3 but prices have been going up now lately
My dad had one of these 500hp with a fat t66 turbo back in 2000 before it was cool
I had an 88 I loved that car nice
I love how this supra looks
incredible style MK3 Toyota SUPRA🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤
Had one for a few years sad someone decided to self delete by jumping from a bridge and i lost it and got ptsd for a few years after but they are great cars and other then its end i had nothing but good memories of mine.
Always wanted to put a 3sgt in one of these they are so heavy and this would help a lot plus all the 90's legend supras in jgtc mk4 were not 2j they were 500 hp 3sgt swapped
the mk3 supra was my favourite car for a REALLY long time, and i agree with it being underrated. I currently admire the Porsche 911 carrera rsr 2.8 and 3,0
that was the forgotten supra, but its on the comeback!!!
My buddy Robo has one of these In Nashville. It's his baby and he's put alot of love into it. It got stolen but the MK3 gods smiled upon him and it was returned. To both of or happyness hell, I like riding in the thing!
Would have loved this in 4K. Darker colors on this generation really makes the body lines stand out.
The coolest supra IMO.
I've been wanting a mk3 supra ever since I first saw it but I'm a highschool student eith a part time job and seeing these go for an average of 10-15k crushed me
@sunnyblumen3807 Here's the video we promised!
i really like your words. thank you
Best Supra ever created.
At some tv show, forgot the name, the two guys bought a mk3 supra and they had worked at it before they sold it for a profit.
not forgotten at all the 70s and 80s racers folks are alive and well it is still well known and remembered and sought after just not be someone who is 19 years old but someone older, bet you its still not forgotten but ya written the title in a way to provoke comments LOL smart smart....
My favourite supra.wish i'll get one,one day.
Such a solid looking car ...its art 🎨
I remember when 3500 lbs was heavy. Now we have a civic type R at 3100 lbs. 😂
I loved this version of the supra, was very underrated, I love the F bodies in general.
My fav Supra
My favorite of the supra's
2+2 seating ....lmao as a teenager i regulary crammed people in there i think 10 at the most
