  • Quarantining rescued horses is a must for the health and safety of the existing herd on the farm. Our homestead is currently home to three draft horses. Odin here, a Belgian rescue from a Texas killpen, is our fourth resident and is currently under quarantine. We are not a professional quarantine facility but we do take biohazards seriously. So before Odin meets his future herdmates, we make sure he's separated and off to a good start in a quarantined area. This quarantine time also allows the horse to acclimate to his new surroundings without competing for feed, water, and allowing the body time to heal.
Ideally a rescue horse should not share airspace nor make physical contact with resident horses until cleared by a veterinarian. This reduces contamination of the stable and prevents viruses, lice, and other illnesses from being transmitted. Minimum quarantine time at our farm is two weeks. More time is needed starting at the onset of any symptoms. After bloodwork and fecal labs come back clear, and with our vet's blessing, the new horse will then be in allowed into the stable.
This video explains how we use a pasture that's well away from the other horses for our quarantine area. I discuss footwear, handling of feed, and why we quarantine rescued stock.

He's beautiful! You are so kind to give him such a loving home.
I'm loving your channel. I grew up in Central NJ and sadly so many people outside of the state, especially in the south where I moved seemed so surprised when I said I grew up around farms and woods. Your farm looks like home to me.
