Thank you for the link,,, much appreciated man..
@@kakakhodenn9128 You bet!
The record version of Rosanna is the second time ever the band played through the song. That's the basic track. Patch had the chords for the first part of the verse and wanted a Bo Diddley type of beat. Jeff immediately replied: "No, you don't; how about this?" and kicked off this shuffle which he put together from Purdie and Bonham.
Since Sony boss buried Toto in the US after IV, they always did big gigs in Europe and Japan. Thanks for mentioning Mike's bass playing. His pocket is tighter than the greed of Wall Street. Rest in peace, Jeff and Mike. Always in my heart.
Jeff is the best of all time. Sadly he left far too soon, yet he is still one of the most prolific drummers ever thanks to his early start as a session musician that carried thru his entire career. The Porcaro brothers (Jeff, Mike, Steve) along with Lukather & Paich were some of the most in demand sessions players and were the studio musicians for many of the biggest artists throughout the 80's & 90's. Lukather, Paich, & Jeff Porcaro each have thousands of recording credits, many of which were chart toppers and Grammy winners.

No one can play the rosanna shuffle right except Jeff Porcaro.
To play it right, you need to have the exact same feel as Jeff.
And i think that is highly unlikely that you do.
People should fool around with it at home but i think no one should make a cover.
Besides the iconic J Porcaro shuffle beat, there was actually a Pantera song that Vinnie Paul used an identical paradiddle-diddle part on to start the song that he might have heard Jeff play during this song just like Jeff done for the shuffle after hearing Bernard Purdie do it.Its the part at 11:55 . Eventhough a paradiddle-diddle isn't a J Porcaro lick, however it always makes you wonder if Rosanna is where Vinnie first heard speaking of the Paris show video,it's literally the cleanest & tightest live show I've ever watched because of how perfect Jeff and the rest of the band played. When Eddie Van Halen names Jeff the groove master of all time, especially considering who his brother is, that tells you just how bad ass Jeff really was.
Jeff Porcaro ,Mike Porcaro and Carlos Vega in my heart !!! Thiago from Brazil !!!
Live in Paris is the best of Toto ever, this version of Rosanna is amazing
Jeff Porcaro is my favorite drummer is all time, you must remember he was a go to drummer for allot of act such as Boz Scags, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers and evening Michael Jackson. He has some of the best fills in the business, and is k own for his shuffles which are very dynamic and great. He is a i time keeper and the glue to this group. He could do the impossible on a drum kit and remeber he is a studio drum and is gong to be very dynamic with his famous shuffles, ghost notes and fills! Most amazing drummer I have ever heard. Lead vocals for ToTo Bobby Kimball, Joseph Willams, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen a lot of member have sung leads. Of coarse ToTo has been playing for over 40 years together and the line has changed a few times, in the loss of Jeff Porcaro drummer first passed away, then in 2015 brother Mike Porcaro passed away. Bobby Kimball and Another brother Steve Porcaro left and came back a few times, but they have strips the tear of time.
His work on silk degree is my favorite
Thanks for posting this. Jeff is so often sadly overlooked, because he had no interest in solos or flash. He was a band's drummer, allowing them to shine, but his moments when they come are magical and that time he keeps... But you're right, the body of his works speaks for itself and for him, because he was the go-to guy who nailed it. Same as Luke on guitar, who could hear something once or twice and nail the solo part with relative ease. Add Mike and Dave to the mix and what you had was pure genius.
You get it Tony!

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Great Fagencover!
That opening triplet?! HOW!? He was and still is benchmark for the rest of us.
Yup. The greatest.
Thanks for this. BTW: The legendary bassist Leland Sklar is currently posting video remembrances of Jeff Porcaro on RUclips that are worth checking out for a more in depth look at this amazing drummer and person.
Toto's 4 came out when I was only a year old, but goddam.....how this man Frankenstein'd these three iconic drum parts into a whole new monster is just real.
Such a great groove and band. Spot on with the pocket ! Well done mate
Totally mate!
Hope you are well!
On percussion is Chris Trìujilllo who also played the gig in Montreux 1991 and the first tour with Simon (Kingdom of Desire).
Jeffs work on silk degree is so awesome.
Going through the back catalog.
Loving the meme of 2023.
This is another fantastic reaction.
As a hack mallet percussionist in HS who had to double hack on all the drums...
Absolutely love your stuff.
One of my all time favourite drummers as well Andrew
That groove!
Great to hear Steven!
i think this show from paris in 1990 is their best.
Best drummer of all time in my opinion as well. That’s for the commentary. 👍😀
The Rosanna Shuffle, as Jeff Porcaro calls it, is a combination of three different drumming styles. The main drumming style on this is what Jeff calls the Bernard Purdie shuffle. That is the foundation for Jeff's Rosanna shuffle. Second is the John Bonham "Fool in the Rain" drumming from Led Zeppelin. Finally, add in the Bo Diddley bass drum beat, mix it all together, and you have the Rosanna shuffle.
Jim Keltner's interview about Jeff is totally worth the check out. The parts where he talks about Jeff calling other people (drummers) in to do a session. Jim goes nobody does that and he had been a studio drummer for years as well. What a talent Jeff was. RIP
I've seen that. Lee Sklar vid I think!
Legend!
Yeah, it's well known industry legend, that if Jeff felt he wasn't getting a track.....he'd stop the session, grab the phone and call Keltner....Colaiuta....Baird.... "Come Bail me out!" Lol. He was selfless.
Wow! What an epic performance!!!
On Boz Skaggs "Silk Degrees" album, listen Jeff play drums on the song "Georgia". The most in the pocket playing I've ever heard, from anybody, ever!
Beautiful alright Bob. My fave drummer ever :)
Jeff Porcaro is simply the best. Great review!
Couldn't agree more!
Both keyboard players (Paich and Steve P) sang leads on various albums, plus whichever lead singer (Bobby Kimball, Joseph Williams, etc), plus Steve Lukather. Only the Bass/Drums never sang one. :D
Actually Mike Porcaro did some backing vocals in some live performances
I always classified Toto as prog rock. but that might be because I think Jeff Porcaro and Neil Peart are the best drummers to have ever walked the planet Earth.
They are good, but you need to discover lots of drummers more.
Mario Fuentes I’m sorry but if one more person says John Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time I might loose it, not trying to be an ass but I’ve heard it so many times. Neil Peart or Buddy Rich are probably the greatest drummers of all time, Jeff Porcaro was at the top of the lists for grooves, but technical skill not so much, but it depends what kind of drumming you like, and is your opinion.
@@nickavenoso7851 I dindn´t say nothing about that, you got confused.
Mario Fuentes I know, that’s just one thing you could of said, that’s all.
Awesome breakdown. Greetings from NZ as well. Nice to see a fellow kiwi with great content on here. Now I'm gonna check out that podcast with Steve Porcaro!
Please do!
NZ Drummer Podcast. It's episode 31
Jeff was the best... in and out of the studio.
Mike was ridiculously underrated he’s was a groove machine I’ve seen toto many many times live no doubt best band in music history. Jeff said himself I’m a time keeper not into playing drum solo. You can’t compare Jeff to anyone he was a REAL musician was there for the music not for the money. RIP JEFF
Yup!
And yes Mike was a total beast!!!
He had stated in Modern Drummer that he was double scale. He could have asked triple. He didn't. There's humility for you.... ("Yeah, I can raise a family at double scale."). He is sorely missed! The US scene has been hurting since the day he left.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums MIKEY was an amazing player!!!!! Very melodic! He could rip ya head off though; no lie.
This is great. Thanks for posting.
He's the best. Hands down

My fave drummer of all time Chris :)
It's an interesting note about cover bands not being able to reproduce Rosanna. Thinking about that I guess it's true. There are a lot of bands that can play Rosanna *technically* good, but pretty much all covers that I heard lacked that sprinkle of magic dust that only Toto could put on it.
One more note, I don't think that "never played to click track" is accurate, I read somewhere that Jeff actually recorded parts for Fahrenheit album listening to a drum machine beat. But it's been a couple of years that I read it and I may have mixed it up, just worth trying to find out.
Yep, Mike was phenomenal!
Only respect
They are pulling the time away back here, and jeff is just playing a more quarter note pulse
Mr. Rooney check out: Tony Royster Jr ASAP, the one that is 7:10 long, for enjoyment and analysis, he reminds me of Dennis Chambers, your thoughts? Thank you.
Tony is a monster! I'll check it out :)
Can you please react to Georgy Porgy from the same concert? Great video 😊
How bout Witch Hunt by Rush live Grace Under Pressure tour
I’ve always thought Toto was a pretty decently HEAVY band. It may just be Steve but these dudes can really slam out a heavy rock tune.
Best band ever.
No one can touch them
@@AndrewRooneyDrums My favorite band of all time. The only band that could touch them was Rush, imo.
Go find "Kingdom of Desire". Jeff's last album before his leaving. He will blow your mind.
Add Mushanga and Lowdown.
I love Keith Moon, but in a different band he wouldn't have fit, same with Bonham, I'll even through in Neil Peart because in a band where it's about serving the song he probably wouldn't know what to do or might find it too boring. Not only can you imagine jeff pocaro playing in a different...he played on everyone's records from Michael Jackson to Steeley Dan. Jeff didn't like doing drum solos, had he been a show off he probably would be known as "The" guy. Keeping time in a world of playing to clicks has really numbed our ears to how amazing a drummer as rock solid as Jeff... jeff nearly always nailed a song in one take no matter who he played with...that's a great drummer. When asked how long did Toto spend making albums Steve Lukather said " as little time as possible....not many can make that claim on music as proficient as a song like Rosanna...
Great all the way beside this "leading vocalist" who isn't any where near to the skills which needed to sing these songs.. Makes me wonder how on earth they picked the guy? It's just like they chose the first high voice guy the met, i mean he's voice sounds weak without the real power behind it and what's even more annoying he's off the key here and there :/.
The label forced thay guy in them.
