I love the idea of using this as an early warning system so you don't walk into an ambush. Keep these awesome videos coming.
I prefer fishing hooks hung at head level.then the unfriendlys tell on themselves
@GazB85 This is the why in no more Bear Traps.
@GazB85 That's a factor as well. As a little boy growing up in Missouri Me and my friends came upon traps all of the time. Go into the woods and stay on the clear path was our rule. Bear traps tore up many a hunter back in the day.
Works like a charm. Caught me two tweakers last week; and they're not even in season
Lol, might come in handy after UN done training (3/31)😉
@@skindianu That was funny lol
I do pest control for a living, for using snap traps as perimeter alarms or rodent trapping in general I would highly recommended Victor snap traps, cost is the same and they are more reliable and adjustable, also easier to set. Order them online for a dollar a piece, the come In boxes of 12/36. Also using a washer with the primer will help
Rat trap, a nail, tripwire, and a shotgun shell makes a good alarm. I short piece of pipe added will even make a great trap for a survival situation.
Nothing like a good Rodent Sandwich
cool man
Instead of primers, how about cap gun paper caps? You could glue some saran wrap over the caps to make them water proof.
CRAIG HANSEN You could probably coat them with clear paint or nail polish too. (test it before you depend on that idea though) Probably the round ones sold in rings for toy revolvers would be more dependable.
Great Idea, thank you.
Try a Granade pin in the trap, line pulls pin, no side pressure
Brad Hart, you are right ! Sure worked with the old pineapple grenades in Nam.
The set was trapped in?
i dont understand the light one, what would you use that for?
You sure have a talent for making a short story long !
You can also use a mouse trap to make a claymore with a 12 gauge shell
Shhhhh that's illegal, big brother is watching
Blanks...right?
TropoCal SurE
Empty the shotgun shell if you just want an alarm...of course an intruder may mess his/her pants when it goes off...I was losing tools out of my shop, I used this method; heard it go off and after that the sound of feet leaving quickly...never had another problem.
Old 12ga. shells with light load worked just fine. (couldn't shoot them anyway)
Or a pressure mine
I've actually used the rat traps baited with a smear of peanut butter when I was working my way through nursing school... (late 70's) ... City park squirrels tend to be overly trusting, as well as really tasty when boiled with Ramen noodles or rice...
EmergencyNightNurse I mean in a good stew or soup squirt is fantastic tasting
@@gidget8717 I eat squirrel, and I thought the same thing lmao.
Yeah, the meat has a nutty taste
@@normanaltman5888 thats what she said.
@GazB85 we call the grey ones ccxat squirrels and the big red ones fox squirrels
You could also string monofiliment through eye-screws, painted brown, on trees and tie the end near you to a can with a few pebbles in it and have the can balanced on the edge of a rock or stump. When it falls off, you know they are there, but they still do not know if you are there or not. They also do not know where there is. Works to your advantage. Learned this trick in Viet Nam a long time ago and it worked then.
that's Kool ty for that info!
excellent idea. you might want to set ur fishing line a lil lower so if anybody does recon before coming at ur place he wont notice the line. if anybody would do recon, its gonna be under daylight (in the night obviously you dont see shit), thus recon will be able to see the fishing lines if they dont blend into the surrounding (if lines are lower, you need to look at them from a lower angle to percieve em- and fyi trees are perfect observation points). in shtf situation idiots are gonna die very quick. those who remain are gonna be real predators 100%sure, and as such they will do recon before moving in. you may expect them to even use military tactics like the tandem observator/operative. im sure you know people from the military, who in turn are either SF or have acess to SF field manuals and training- theres plenty to learn, especially from the SF. gi's are cannon fodder and are trained as such (interarms cooperation, infantry is very static in mil doctrine so theyre trained to get cover and call for airstrikes/artillery/armor. if theyre on their own, they are an almost exclusively defensive force, dependent on the cooperation between platoons. the SF on the other hand are trained and equipped to be a self-sustainable offensive and defensive force, even in the size of a sole platoon. as in shtf you wont have air or artillery cover, SF tactics is what u want. especially to effectively counter them.)
if I were to do this I would make the rat trap a switch to turn on a flood light. maybe 12 v with a battery
thegadgetguy what would be ideal is when the neighborhood thieves &thugs is doing recon in your yard have the sprinklers turn on and make them all wet😆😆😆😆🤣😆
you wouldn't even need the rat trap for that, I'd use the rat trap to set off the primers. and the smaller mouse trap would be good as an electronic switch
Spring loaded clothespin. Run a wire ( + and - ) down each side, strip and wrap around each jaw. Separate the jaws with a wood shim with a trip string attached.
You could do that with a clothespin, foil gum wrapper, and strips of old/expired creditcards
@@skindianu
ALSO . . . .
your comment abt catching tweakers is STILL winning the internet 5 months later 😂
good idea with the primers. the glow Sticks don't seem easily defeated by simply taking them after the pop.
Excellent suggestion using the clamps to hold the trap in the loaded position! Good stuff as always! Thanks +Sootch00
Brilliant!
Awesome. Genius
Pew pew
Better way: use a small wood screw as an anvil and use muzzleloader percussion caps.
Bend the far corners down on the small trap wires so they hit the primer more like a firing pin. You could use needle nose pliers held at a 45 degree angle across the corner. The small washer under the primer would also make for a more positive ignition. Seal primer backside as well to prevent water getting in ignition materials.
9:18 One of those threaded nails
@83rdox Did you watch the video....with sound?
I cracked up 😂👏 at the idea of Krylon secretly selling their product in Rustoleum cans!!
BloodSweatnBass Right!? And hickock45 secretly dressed as sootch.............
The generic paint for a dollar or two at Wal-Mart is actually krylon paint. True story.
Still can't beat fishing line w/rocks in a can.
Vietnam area alarm used on the first bases
*LOL!*
*I have 60lb test line across the path, with small treble hooks tied to it at waist level, and cans on either side.(hidden in the plants)*
*The ends of the line are connected to light/easy to break tackle, anchored to small LOUD magnetic contact window/door alarms.*
*Trespassers will be hooked, sound the alarms, and run off with 10 cans dragging 6 ft behind them, revealing their location like newlyweds.*
*"w/rocks in cans" Even better.*
*Thanks overclucker!*
@@jaredbalmer3206 *What is a; "Vietnam area alarm"?*
He mentions Mono filament line will stretch over time. Also UVS will degrade the line over time.
Or a fishing line with a barbed hook, and a hand grenade at the other end.
Would using double sided mounting tape to attach the primers work instead of glue ?, thus you can reprime the trap.
Shaking it up prior doesn't do anything. Inside is a glass tube full of a chemical. Glass is broken & combined with the 2nd fluid in the casing. Then it glows
I'm going to be completely frank: the glowstick option isn't bright enough and won't produce enough noise that you will reliably hear it and look towards it at a distance, and the pistol primer option is a bit awkward and not loud enough. I think you might be better off using a muzzleloader percussion cap with a short screw as an anvil. I can also think of a few other ways to use them creatively to set off louder things. Really, though, mousetraps are very much a last-resort type deal for if you run out of better options like solar driveway alarms.
Cut out a semi circle (1/2") from the top of the trap where the bar strikes in the center. Tale a piece of thick aluminum same width as trap but about 3/8" longer. Fasten with flat head machine screws from the bottom of the wood up through the aluminum and fasten the nuts on the upper side. Drill a hole that will accept either a .22 caliber or .27 caliber booster cartridge ( Ramset or Hilti ). Set as normal but for mounting I use a metal stake in the ground to allow the booster charge to discharge unhindered into a safe direction. This is especially effective in countries where reloading components, shotgun primers, shotgun shells are highly regulated. These boosters make for a louder bang than pistol primers.
That's cool. What a good idea.
What’s going on shaky?
Congress, the White House and the State of New York obviously needs these rat traps: we need an extra large size for HRC.
And an even bigger one for Trump.

13:25 I've had my fair share of "what the heck". ;)
The ultimate alarm system would be a human-sized trap that would break an ankle when that turd came in your compound! ;)
5 years later!
One thing that will help with setting off the caps is a bb size dot of JB weld on the bar just over the caps .
I love the primer-mouse trap idea...nice, thanks!
A bead of solder on the trap wire to hit the primer more like a firing pin should solve the problem with the misfires.
The only part I like is using sedatives to pass the time.
+Stigstigster really 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fuck it id eat a rat if there was no other food haha. Its probably not HORRIBLE. Just tell everyone else you found some dark meat chicken lol they probably won't notice
Great ideas, we used to do similar things in the military about 30yrs ago, ageless tips though..........
It occurs to me that if you take a small thumbtack and glue them to the corner of the small trap in line with the primer it might make it go off more.
One way to avoid unwanted people from snagging the glow stick once they trip the wire to avoid detection is to have enough wire to put the trap about 10 ft up a tree facing your lookout spot then running wire down the tree with a nail about a foot off the ground into the tree then obviously run your wire the rest of the way like normal.. unless they have a collapsible ladder in their pack they are not getting to it before you see it
Friend of mine ate a rat said it tasted like chicken 🍗 yumm 😜
It was worth the tinkering to watch my hoity mom crap herself! Thank u, Mr. Sootch!!!
Somewhere I have several engineer handbooks from Radio shack that cover making home alarm systems out of clothes pins, cans, and other stuff from around your house. This video brought back some memories of my parents finding some of my traps around the yard and house. Always good to find ways of re-using common items for other purposes.
I don't know much about pistol primers (except for what they do when they do what they are supposed to do) but I am sure you could, with not too much efford, make it set off flares and/or flash powder for a more serious report.
I love that you did not edit out the "fails" :) ("That the set was trapped in...")
Awsome video, as always.
rodent poison's are causing tragedies for the predator birds, killing many a year!
mount a shotgun shell to the trap ,put a small split shot on the bar to hit the primer, trip wire to the trigger. Pow
I have some of those back in the farm
Thats illegal sir ! Lol
@@relativelynomadic LOL only use a blank shot gun shell or just the primer
Nice, Sensible. I'd add one modification to your setup and prep in general. Spectra braided line. Good ol' mono is plentiful and a good thing, but for critical work the stretch can be a liability - one can't always count on a straight forward setup like you've got here. Sometimes, especially when expediently set, trips have to be strung over and around things. In those sits, mono fails, and spectra shines.
The newish spectra fishing braids all have super-low stretch (sometimes near zero) and tiny diameter for their strength. Ex - if you were using 20 lb mono before, you could use a Power Pro braid that's a 6lb diameter. Since it's braid, it's reflective signature is already reduced. Since it's now smaller than sewing thread, it's almost invisible, even in daylight. And since it's braid, it can be stained. I use nothing other than a sharpie.
It's awesome, accurate, and invisible.
What great info, thanks
ty for the info
Great tip , thanks
Someone was paying attention in JEST school. Semper fi brother.
This is something I'll have to remember and use when I move into the woods and leaving and coming back don't want to come home to something with out some kind of warning.. keep up the good work...
Good idea. Maybe you could epoxy some small shot or bb's to help set off the primers.
My favourite one is the 30 rat traps at the front door and you hear them scream
Aloha.
The larger traps with the tie-wired light sticks are awesome, and reloadable over & over again.
The smaller traps with the primer caps, rather than gluing them on (1-time use), drill a tight hole countersink to hold the primer caps, so you just press a fresh one in to reload.
Another idea is to simply use the paper rolls from a cap gun, and just put a couple nails on the side to hook them into place across where the bar lands. When it snaps, it will fire all the caps under the bar, should be plenty loud, and it is cheaply reloadable on the spot.
PS -- Keep putting the bloopers in on your videos, it's like waiting for the easter eggs after the credits on a Marvel Movie.
Peace & Prepare
Pax et Paro
Screw the trap to the fence .then drill thru the trap and fence and install a 22lr . more noise easy to reload IMO good info sir....these traps do go off to easy..
VN Dustoff Good idea. CCI makes some great little blanks as well.
SP.....might I suggest using SpiderWire....its 10 gazillion times stronger than typical fishing line. Plus you can find it a darker color...almost OD...and it holds up better UV exposure in the sun.
Yeah, some Spiderwire camo braid, or a moss green braid would be better. The braid will not break. Good thinking about the UV, cause that WILL certainly degrade typical mono fishing line, but no braided line. That stuff is super strong.
Long live the Republic!
Two prevent the primer from blowing a hole in the wood trap and eventually ruining it for that purpose, how about gluing a small flat metal plate to each corner and then gluing the primers onto those little metal plates? In addition, since the primers need metal to metal contact, put a small bit of painters tape over just that little section that will make impact with the primers before painting them. Then of course, peel them off after the paint job is complete.
this guy is consumed with fear, the sky is falling
great idea sootch. another idea for the glow stick signal. use braided line instead of mono-filament line. also screw the trap higher in a tree/post and run it down through an eye screw or fence post staple. on the tied off end use a hook or bent nail to hang a looped end of the braided line. this would allow it to be unhooked when not needed. the extra height in the dark should be easier to spot as well as cast out more light in the area. personally if i was just passing though and set something like this off i'd be doing an about face and double timing out
attaching a fishing bell might work better.
may try to glue some cut off thumb tacks to the wire striker to use as a "firing pin type set up.
Ok , I see him at 11:50 talking about the primer blowing a hole in the wood and holding the trap with the live primer in other hand over his finger and pulling on the trap..
What is to keep the intruder from simply taking the glow stick and putting it in their pocket after it is tripped? I think the primer alarm is the best to use.
Use an IR chemstick. They can't see the light, so they can't find it to pocket it. Meanwhile you're behind a NV scope watching them stubble around in the dark looking for that "sound".
The primer one is great but I’m sure if tripped the glow stick one could simply be pulled out and hidden.
I would use two small eyelets and a pin to hold the trap down. Then when the string is pulled the pin pulls out and sets the trap off. Makes it more secure and allows the string to pull away.
Shaking the stick up before the chemical reaction starts doesnt help it at all. man I love these though. I'm putting a few traps in my car now
Rats are squirrels with ugly tales. Taste the same, specially when ya starvin'!
True lol
My .02, I would run the trip wire loose enough so the person or group thay trips it is about 10 ft past the trap so they have a harder time hearing the noise of the trap engaging or seeing the chem stick glow. The trip wire can still be elevated using natural vegetation as to make sure it's not stepped over. You'd want the wire to give the perception the person got their foot caught on undergrowth thus adding a level of stealth to the trap.
I know this is like 6 years after the video, but put a nail or screw behind the chem-light to ensure the tube inside brakes. I've seen these get triggered but not light up.
I love the primer alarm, nice job! Also foot snares the way The Meat Trapper does in his Resistance Trapping video.
A professionally made snare with a good snare lock will trip up a bad guy and because he would have to use both hands to get it off, he will have to put his weapon down, leaving him open for you to deal with.
The alarm to alert you and half a dozen foot snares scattered along the path will reduce the size of the threat for you to take the upper hand.
I think I'd forego the mouse traps and just rely on the larger rat traps for both the light sticks and primer traps. especially the primer traps where the added force of the hammer coming down should be enough to be certain the primers will go bang when the trap is activated.
Thanks for the video
Try to use a shotgun shell insteat a primer as a noise alarm. This scares off intruders and smaller predators
Have a great time
nice video :) H8trs aside of course there , Ya just cannot Please everybody
Seventh. Use a small washer as base for the primer, the wood on the mousetrap when wet gets to soft to set it off.
Um no stain the wood should solve that problem
@@brandenzobal5793 proper size washer probably more reliable - why not both ;-)
Cool...vietnamese booby traps..U.S. training manual...Im thinking using two 22 caps for a better report?

I think the vc and nva style traps are banned atleast the punji traps are i think
What exactly does the glow stick do when you sleep in the tent at night and a predator triggers the trap? So that the intruder can see better in the light ??? 😮😮
You use it when you have a person on gard while you sleep. .
or as an indication that someone was there while you were out.
if its glowing, it might have been an animal, if its gone, it was probably a person.
I like it! We have several new traps in our stash and now I plan to modify them like yours. Great concept. I hope you are doing well.
small head nail an muzzle loader primer work better

One of the best videos you have made. Simple, effective and easily applied.
i have seen a couple of your videos liked them all! wish we were neighbors! anyways, see you in heaven sir!
@ 7:51 - As you are busy setting up your security trip line, someone is driving right up your driveway! LOL
Yeah I watched a lot of you videos. I think for warning systems stay great. But an evasion situation. I recommend glue sticks. You could stretch them for about 7 to 14 ft. They can hold up in all weather. For about 3 weeks. It could be as thin as a human hair. The trick is to cut little pieces of them and then melt them from one side of the tree to the other. One glue stick can make about 40 50 lines. Always go the same way in of your perimeter each day. Keep them 3 ft off the ground. Otherwise small animals will hit him. They leave no Trace. Or very little. Not like fishing line or copper line. Takes a lot of practice. You could put them across trails too. If you have to backtrack you'll know someone's been following you. Or you can lead them astray if you want to make them thick. When you cut the glue stick make small triangles the very thin part of the triangle goes through one branch and then the thicker part goes to another. Always safety first. Good luck
Good idea trapping and signaling system. Thanks.
2 cents: Maybe remind people also to be extra careful not to touch the primer area when setting to trap to avoid a finger catastrophe. In a SHTF scenario there are no hospitals and you need every body part working 100%.
Nathan... shtf. Shit Hits the Fan
Your videos may very well one day save lives if they have not already, thank`s for taking your time to do what you do.
Michael Irons I’m watching this during the corona pandemia.... so you got a little bit of a heads up on me ...
The wire that is a speaker voice coil is dark and blends in well with the surroundings.
A plague of mice or rats is its own SHTF scenario. Google Australian Mouse Plague.

Great for SHTF. Best security alarm eva.
Hey Sootch00,
That can of Krylon camo paint looks suspiciously like Rustolium.
Thanks for the video
Krylon has the better sprayer, than Rustolium
That's funny, I don't care who you are....
Where can I find these nails that thread into a tree?
nice....making a few for the blind spot at my garage
Smoke Grenade tops works great with shotgun primers.
this is cool I like it if you put them up high in tree cem light would be great.
I used an old battery powered bicycle horn on a rat trap when I was a kid, worked well for a trip wire alarm
*just admit it , you're afraid of the dark...*
Ive also seen the magnetic window / door sensors from cheaper battery operated burgular systems used.
I believe dollar general sells them with the battery buzzer.
Anything to give you a little time to rest or relax.
Viet Nam style punji sticks are another good alternative. If done right, you catch em at night, you'll have em in the morning !!!
Thanks for a great video.
Sootch at school: Hey Beav, whatcha doin' after school?
The Beaver: Nothin' much. Wally and me are gonna throw the football.
Sootch: Why don'tcha meet me at the park. I've got somethin' really neat I wanna show ya!
The Beaver: Gee, Sootch! What is it?!?
Sootch: I can't tell ya! But you're gonna really like it!
The Beaver: It's not something that's gonna get me in trouble is it?...'cause everytime you show me somethin' neat, ...I get in trouble!
Sootch: Nah, Beav! It's nothin' like that! Trust me!
The Beaver: trusting you, Sootch, is like asking for a really bad haircut or something!
Sootch: Ah, don't be silly Beav! Meet me at the park after school, and I'll show ya!
The Beaver: Well,...OK Sootch,...but you better not be pullin' my leg or nothin'!
That glowstick idea was great, never thought of that before.
Excellent info Sootch! I'm wondering if there is the Rat trap would be good with a small tube (Maybe in a sealed drinking straw?) of tannerite? Hmmmm.... Maybe a quick vid idea for you... Since you have So Much time on your hands. lol
BTW ... Where did you get that Cool @SS 550 cord wrap thingy?!?!? My likey!
Very interesting! How would you combine a large rat trap with a cheap dollar store door/window alarm to REALLY make some loud, long-time extended noise? I guess the window alarm would have to be draped/wrapped in plastic, to protect from moisture...
Don't know many who want to carry a battery drill and screws around. Balling wire/Paracord/wire be lighter and more options. Shotgun primers would work better, no glue and fits snug in right size hole so you can refill trap after used, just need to fashion a pointy striker where it would strike primer on the metal bar. Not sure I'd ever use my glow sticks on these....but these definitely have potential. Little traps would be less bulky to carry as well, carry 2 or 3 vs 1 rat trap.
why dont you set the trap THEN put the glow stick in ? that way you dont go through a bunch of glowsticks trying to set the trap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can also glur or screw your trap to a better piece of wood so you dont have to be so careful with it !
