      Boxing is the art of position. The way to evade and move just slightly enough to miss but just enough to be ready for the next clean power strike. Jabs are for distraction and to overwhelm while the rear hand is for the KO bow. The legs "kick" down the ground to transfer energy to the fists aside from skipping and sliding for quick movement. There is a saying that "the twist of the feet is a reflection of a perfect rotation of the hips when striking". Just like in Karate

    As a former amateur boxer I can confirm that spinning your body is an amazing way of defending at close distance, for once, your movement is little, so it is pretty quick, and even if you don't completely evade the punch, his punch will slip through your body so, you won't take it full force, you also won't move away from your opponent so you can keep at punching range, and finally it leaves you at the perfect position for powerful counterpunching, since turning your body, also serves as loading your punch, something you aren't encouraged to do otherwise, as it is a huge visual queue that you'r about to punch

    • @craigcrissman4651
      @craigcrissman4651 3 года назад +2

      Yeah the loading aspect is why counter punching can be so devastating. Because you're hiding the load up that would normally extremely telegraph your punch behind a defensive movement

    Mayweather strength is his ability to read the space, like you said, and react accordingly. He’s a good counter boxer and has great head movement that allows him to counter.
    I think his biggest weakness is his attitude. He believes he’s untouchable and I don’t think he’s fought very aggressive peek-a-boo fighters (like Mike Tyson) or In fighters that can properly counter his style.

      He did, and the referee was so corrupt that it almost started punching the other guy (Marcos Maidana). Check it if you can, there is a particular point in the fight where the referee interrupts the match FOR NO REASON when Maidana pinned Mayweather to the ropes. Issue is.. Boxing vs karate is hard to do. Mayweather is a pro boxer and a normal boxer box's different. But from one person that did do boxing for 3 years and now doing karate. I can say.
    Karate doesn't roll the punches that boxers are doing. But in boxing your feet work is where the power comes from and shoulders. In karate the power is from the hips.
    Also the blocking with gloves are parries. With or without gloves parries are the 2nd best move you learn. But you also learn to move your head.
    Karate can use the hand work from boxer's. Boxers can use the kicks from Karate.. But at that point you would be a kick boxer. So as I said it hard to compare the styles.

    • @daveyjones18
      @daveyjones18 3 года назад

      Another problem comparing the Mayweather style in particular, is that they use their left hand as a catchers mitt to protect the jaw, which is only possible with a bulky boxing golve 👍

    Lots of people don’t recognize Mayweathers ability to control the ring and distance between himself and his opponent. This is why his defense is so prolific. If you watch even when he is on the outside he is controlling everything. In boxing you’re taught to control the center. It gives you more options and ability to really impose your will and know where your opponent is going to set your attacks. Watch any Mayweather fight and you see this control.
    But a great defense to this control of the ring and to be able turn the table on control against a Mayweather defense is to bully him. But many just couldn’t do it for long periods. This is because he would make a slight change to his stance or he’d draw you in to reassert control, or he’d attack with more pressure, and this would make his opponents think they needed to switch they style with his, and that’s why Mayweather was such a great fighter and his defense was impeccable. Had his opponents understood to continue a bully/close pressure offense, they’d be more successful with Mayweather. Also Mayweather hated when his opponents were fast and moved a lot changing they angles.
    These where Mayweathers pros and cons. It’s easier said then done, of course. But when you fight you know how important this things are. Especially in boxing.
    Being I fought (Boxing)for over 30+ years, over 15 years in TSD, and a little bit of training in kick boxing, and aikido. Sometimes mastering some of the simplest techniques will help you have the most success, and control (ring management, distance, movement, timing, and subtle adjustments) makes the biggest impact in a fight and success in a fight.
    Just found your videos. Love them already. Been binge watching for 2 days lol. Keep up the great content. 🙏🏾

    Trying to answe your questions, Sensei: Mayweather's strengths are mostly on the way we uses his shoulders to block and make the opponent act (and then react), but also be tactical about the whole fight e.g. let the opponent hunt at the beginning, make them tired, then go after them. His weakness, I'll say, compared to someone like Mike Tyson or Ali, is that he has less footwork (he has lots of hip and shoulder, but not as much footwork). Instead he'll break the rhythm and walk around the ring. The other most obvious weakness is that *he's only a boxer* and doesn't know how to kick or grapple. Of course, he might be one of the best strikers in the world.

    His strength is controlling the distance with that lead hand. What you also notice is that he makes his sparring partner come to him, so he can practise intercepting him as he moves in. I didn't follow his career, because his fights weren't very watchable, so I don't know whether he ever fought an expert counter-puncher. Why no lead hook in Karate? It can be telegraphed, take longer, yet is still often there when the straight jab, uppercut or backfist is not. Especially when your opponent is expecting a jab, upper cut or backfist. And it's more powerful than the others often finishing your opponent.

    • @KarateDojowaKu
      @KarateDojowaKu  3 года назад +4

      My guess is that a hook becomes effective once the weight of the gloves are added on. If you try with just your bare fist more power can be loaded if you punch rather straight . Maybe this component is one of the reason why

    • @sonnystaton
      @sonnystaton 3 года назад

      @@KarateDojowaKu Bare fist or not it's very effective & powerful. Maybe even more powerful than a Karate counter punch. Watch MMA, tiny 4oz gloves yet plenty of KO's by lead hook, it's power is the kinetic chain energy that Bruce Lee explains very well in Tao of Jeet Kun Do. The kinetic chain downside is telegraphing, so it won't land as the lead strike in a combination or without at least a feint. But it lands regularly in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai & MMA.The power just like a Karate punch comes from the hip rotation, since it's path isn't a straight line but a curve, greater traveled distance to the target means it reaches the target later but at a higher speed. Also its adding centrifugal force to it's power. In boxing it's generally the 3rd strike in a basic combination with jab being the 1st, cross being the 2nd & the hook the 3rd.

Even if I don't land it, it is a great sets up for a kick. In America there are so many people who by boxing training or by watching boxing will lean their upper body back to avoid a hook, leaving an big opening to follow with a body kick.

      @sonnystaton 3 года назад

      @@daveyjones18 I don't see any logical argument for a higher risk inadvertently landing a hook to the skull, than a straight punch. I was hoping this post would die into oblivion at some point, but I guess it will not (just when I think nobody cares). Anyway, the 'vertical punch' I was referring to is not related to karate but more like boxing/generic/jkd type: if you're right-handed, your knuckles are on top (on contact), and considered 'horizontal' karate kind of 'tsuki', whereas (also right-handed) when your knuckles are on the right side, therefore considered 'vertical' as in Bruce Lee's jkd. Overall, I'm encouraging (at least Shotokan) karateka how to respond to western style, Muay Thai boxers, & kyokushin karateka, off the mat.

    Ok.. you can still parry a punch without a glove or a glove that big.
    those are 16 ounce gloves. professional boxing matches go down all the way to 8 ounce gloves.
    back in the old days of boxing , gloves went all the way to 6 ounce gloves i think. like floyd mayweather fights at 8 ounce gloves, ali at one point i think used 6 ounce gloves.
    in ufc i think they are four ounce gloves. so a 6 ounce glove is not to far off from a 4 ounce glove.
    and these guys were parrying or blocking punches with 6 ounce gloves wich are almost the same size as a ufc glove.
    oh yeah. also the gloves are not ment to be a weapon. thats not what the gloves are for. the gloves are soley desgned to protect the hands. however its not ment to protect the opponent either.

    Hello Sensei. Since you enjoyed analysing Mayweather's boxing, and because you learned how aikidoka draw out an attack, I think you would really enjoy this analysis: ruclips.net/video/oTO6abQFs14/видео.html
    Based on this video, I think you can say that aikido/aikijutsu uses either "progressive indirect attack" or "attack by drawing" to create an opening for a "hand Immobilization attack".

  • @tonyd6514

    You ask what we think Mayweather's weaknesses are. He often holds his front hand across his stomach - from there he can flick his jab out - moving a bit like a backfist but then straightening at the end. His rear hand is held ready for a cross. If you fought him with your right leg forward - keeping your elbow down - your jab to his head will naturally shield you from his jab with your forearm (he'd be trying to lift his arm into your forearm using only his shoulder muscle - which is a very weak movement), and your left arm can be ready to deflect any cross he throws, but you can also circle to his blind side as your punch, making it even harder for him to cross. He may of course change his guard or stance - but that's where he's inherently vulnerable with that guard.
    You mention the leaning and twisting of the upper body. It's worth remembering that there are no low kicks in boxing. With full contact low kicks allowsed, when you lean your upper body and commit weight to one foot, that foot/leg becomes an easy target for sweeps or low kicks.
    Regarding using the front hand: karate also has the haito uchi (in English, ridge hand or reverse knifehand) strike. With practice, it can be thrown out much like a jab ~20cm to the side of the target and snapped back surprisingly strongly through the target: it's stronger and faster than a hook punch, far less telegraphed and more controlled. That can be mixed in with jabs, backfists (both sideways and forward/downward) and don't forget elbows: they're especially useful when someone blocks a jab near your wrist, if you're sliding forwards to close distance. Which is not to say uppercuts aren't useful too: they certainly are, but you touch on the reason you see a lot more of them in boxing - the large gloves make it harder to damage an opponent holding their globes by their head, and an uppercut can sneak through that kind of guard. When it's not so hard to hit the head, the uppercut - which has very limited range and slow recovery - isn't needed or useful quite as often.

    • @BS-cc4ks

      ....No, the ridge hand is not faster or stronger then a hook punch. As in, a hook punch can be more compact then a ridge hand while retaining more power. Which ironically makes the hook punch less telegraphed and more controlled then the ridge hand.
