For a beginner, tactics in doubles and mixeddoubles can be a little overwhelming. Where to stand and how to move on court, where to attack and what to do during the serve? The bad news: There is no easy answer to these questions and a lot depends on your level, skills and especially the situation you are in. The good news: there are certain guidlines and rules of thumb that should help you to be a lot more successful right from the beginning and to get a better idea of how to play doubles and mixed doubles. In the video I am going to cover them and I am super happy that Australia's top shuttler Gronya Somerville is joining me!
--Overview-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here a short overview about the different sections and topics in the video:
0:00 Introduction
0:53 Basic Positioning
2:00 Fight for the Lift
3:53 Where to Attack
5:11 Defensive Position
6:10 Block and follow up
7:10 Moving in Defense
8:03 Outro
--Additional Info---------------------------------------------------------------------
Please keep in mind, that the players in the video are world class athletes, and some of the shots and tactics they use may differ in some cases from the basic advice. Elite players have a great awareness of the situation they are in and have a good understanding of their partners actions. That's why they sometimes can play shots that may go against the basic guidleines or position a little different but still score points. Anticipation and intuition about what will happen next helps them to do so and breaking out of certain patterns can be essential to win on that level.

Same lol
What country are you from mate ?
Me too
Thanks, everyone that I play with needs to watch this kind of video. But they can't be bothered! 😳
Gronya's video was very good. I hadn't considered some of those things, like not attacking the tramlines straight away. 🤔
Great tips, equally helpful for beginners as well as well as established partners. One of the best created coach videos here. Thanks so much!
Great tips Toby and Gronya!
One of the best tactical videos I've ever seen. Well done and keep posting... Will Def share this to my students as a reminder
I read Tobias Wakanda at first. Thank you for the strategy explanation. Realy good!!!
Great one - and a good foundation to the advanced tactics shown at Gronya's channel!
Thank you, great to hear it helped! 😊
For the beginners playing batminton in court is best video thank U
Sir please make a video on deceptions...
How to execute them and when actually we should use them in the game...
Very useful to me. Thank-you very much.
This is what I am waiting for!!
Me too!! 👍🙏

Helps a lot thanks!
Coach! I have doubt that how do you make your players regular exercises in a weekend
Great tips thank you so much
Happy that the video helps! Thank you for your kind words!
Well we'll Gronya ... Surprise surprise... Nice video
5. How do they suggest you stand with your feet when waiting for the birdie to be returned?
Hello my friend
What method do you suggest to strengthen the wrist in the blows of its name and dice?
I have never seen better tutorials on badminton.
Thank you! =)
Ok mit Somerville wars wirklich überraschend👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Boo! :P
Hi, thanks for the tactics video! I have few questions:
1 Should you vary the distance to the net when you are net player in attacking position? for example when standing too close to the net you can’t block or intercept drive defense because shuttle flies too fast, but when standing too back if opponent plays block you have to lift because you are standing too back
2. If you are defending player, when to play high defense, drive defense with topspin or block, I think drive after smash is safest because you push shuttle far and low but they still have advantage and blocking is most dangerous because controlling height is difficult. So question is maybe play drives and high lifts from harder smashes and wait for opportunity to block from softer shots?
Thanks!
Hi Martin, great questions.
About the first one: The distance can depend a lot on the situation and also on your opponents. If they never or rarely play a counter defense, take a step forward and cover the net and if your partner plays a drop also push forward. In one of the upcoming videos there will also be tips for the positioning of the front player in terms of how close or how far away from the net so I hope this one will explain everything in detail.
About the second one: when your opponents attack with a steep smash drive defense can be dangerous because it flies upwards directly into the racket of the opponents front court player. So I would say the angle is more important then the power. A block to the net is extremly dangerous under pressure and the right timing is curcial. But this is also one thing I will go in detail on in the next video with Gronya ;) so I hope you can wait a little longer XD
@7:00 in this scenario, she blocks but didn't go forward and the opponent attacked her backhand side easily because straight return will do the job. I think she didn't go forward is because she's probably the backcourt player and her partner is a front court player.
Thanks!
Please also make a video on full court stepping
Thank you
Thanks
Love the excellent tips. How not to smash into the front partner if they are not squatting low or we don’t jump smash?
It should never hit your partner if you smash properly and your partner's head is at net level.
Super👌
My friend sent me the link to this video a day before our big match made me think if my partner are as good as me
Watching this video the night before a badminton competition. (I haven't practiced)
4:09 i never knew this tip!!
most of the time people don't even look at their partner. The tip is a bit off. The smash has to be depend on the position of the bird. Everything is depend on the position where you or ur partner about to smash.
Most of the time you should not smash cross court. If it slow opponent able to control your smash. No matter where ur front player stand they will have time to get the bird pass him or her. Another word after their return shot 50%+ your next shot won't be a smash.
Anything you want to do, all you need is to learn ur opponent weakness and habit. Try to observer if the return always straight or what. Then you play around that. Smash drop whatever it is.
And the tip on defense shot was off also. Your feet should perpendicular with the bird. If you look how in the video show when the bird is in the corner.

--
Which position do you recommend (when receiving the serve) for the partner of the returner and why?
With many amateur players I see an almost parallel position to the returner.
In my opinion, this is wrong.
I recommend that the partner takes a position close to or above the centre line and just behind the returner in order to take a quick offensive position.
Not identical, but similar to the position of the serving pair.
Nice tactic for beginners
What's the weight of your racquet , for playing doubles which is better 3u or 4u ?
His is Arcsaber11 and it's a 3U. Mostly now a days players are moving towards lighter rackets. It would also depend upon your plying style attack/defense and strength. A 3U headheavy will be difficult to maneuver but good for attcking.. 4U would be a safer bet since your level seems to be beginner.
Sir this tips are amazing please train me
1- Front back
2- Fight for the lift
3- Attack arounf area your partner is in
4- Defensive Position. Stand ALMOST parallel to net
5- The person doing block moves forward
6-Move sideways in defence
I haven't played for a very long time. Decided start playing back. Which one should i train first? Help!
Maybe Footwork
@@amaniqistina4350 I've been playing for months now, but got a knee injury recently. Maybe footwork is the way to go first. Thank you
i have a men's double tournament to play on coming 4th of december. one of us should be below 40 yrs old and another player should be over 40yrs old. in this kind of situation, what kind of strategy and playing style will be very useful?
The sole age doesn't say so much. It depends on your overall level and your streghts and weaknesses. If you have one player that is a lot fitter and faster it could make sense trying to get him more to the back and the other one should look more for the net
@@tobiaswadenka8435 im 23 yrs old and i must cover back court much. right?
@@gaffarsajith3514 yea
Keep doing videos broo
I will
I don't see Gronya's channel in the description or did i miss it ?
Sorry now i added the link to her video
@@tobiaswadenka8435 thanks for all the work. Great videos.
Please tell me all types of drills, footwork, exercises......,so on make all in one video coach!
The most dangerous thing happens to me is when i defend a smash i have no power & i just make contact but no stroke....& ending up in giving to their front player .......which csn easily smash at my face.....:(
Yes that usually makes it easy for the other pair. Have you watched the video about defense i did with gronya? There we give some advice about things like that (you can find it on gronyas channel) 😊
Doubles is tough, the speed is crucial but that positioning is really hard to master
The positioning isnt that hard. You Just have to mirror your Mate
Nope. Disagree. All you have to remember is, move as if there is an invisible straight rope between the two players.
@@rahvij it is quite hard when the game is kind of neutral. After a push shot to the back court, I wonder if I should move to the front to fend off the net shot, or move back to the centre to defend
It depends on how much pressure the push shot is, there is no standard answer, but most of the times you can move forward to the net a little bit to put more attention to the net, leave the rear court to your partner!
@@eddieliao6635 thanks! I will need to try that! Doubles is harder than singles for me
"Man is stronger than the Woman"
The most underrated statement now.
My gf play smash while me Infront to intercept..ahahahhaha
Yes... Why this statement? Discrimination is really bad at this thing... That's why Disliked the video😐
@@krityaawasthi9209 Lol, it calls sexual dimorphism. If you had only studied at school properly, you wouldn't have hated this statement.
@@nikitakolobov5137 Why are you being soo rude ...i have just shared my mindset nothing else..... I just want men and women treated equally that's all.. If you have any problem with that... So i don't give a fuck to that....
@@krityaawasthi9209 Women and men are equal except cases where we cannot overcome our physiology. I have no problem with it, you just overreacting on the statement in the video while it has nothing to do with discrimination.
I was expecting some cheesy tactics e.g. passive cross drop shots (people usually defend the straight shot), when receiving serve, drive to opponent's backhand and follow through with a net kill, when serving - serve in positions which you can predict their return habit and then intercept it etc...
@5:58 The girl on the left side has her right foot back because she needs to face the attacking person
I'm here for school
For a moment I forgot I was watching a video on badminton because I was engrossed in staring at her eyes. She is so beautiful.
Gronya is aiiiite
FUN FACT - opponent also watching !!
They need a strong body and years of training to achieve this strategy😂
You need certain technical abilities, especially you need to be able to place the shuttle properly and you should be able to start and move out of the corner quickly but most of these things in the video can be useful even for people with not so much experience (but of course it needs a lot to make it look like in the video :P)
It's kind of disappointing that, for example, you explain why they use one leg in front of the other (which you don't really recommend 😛), but you don't explain why is a lot wiser to stay parallel to the net! What I am saying is that you should explain ALL the reasons of any positioning you want the viewer to be aware of. Thank you very much for your work.🙏😇
Thanks for your feedback! As this video is about the basics i didn't want to go too deep into such details. The topic of foot position on a higher in defence on a higher level alone is so complex that you can easily make a couple of videos about it. In my experience most beginners stand to offensive in defense (one leg far in front) so focussing on a more parallel position usually helps
Is that Danny d?

I got 3 ads in 6 minutes video 😓
so many players just stick to 1 formation and never rotate.

why do you hate to state fact...?
Is Tobias a german? His accent sounds really german XD (i live in germany)
Yes I am and yes it sounds like that 🙈🤪
Wow I got a heart. Can i count it as a yes?
@@Mikail_199 I already wrote an answer 😉
Hab morgen Training (in Bochum und natürlich Badminton) sollte also lieber pennen
@@Mikail_199 ja stimmt. Dann mal viel Spaß im Training morgen!
She was so beautiful that I completely missed her's tactical part in the video..😅😂
why would u wanna say it if it is a fact :/
Why do you hate to say the fact that man is stronger.. That is just fact.. Woman has other advantages.. And man has other advantages.. If you really want to have a fair situation without looking at this fact.. There shouldn't be any woman singles or doubles.. Just play in one open tournament regardless of gender... (sorry.. A bit annoyed by her statement)
Why does she hate saying a man is stronger than a women? Have you ever watched the olympics?
Oh feminist
2:12 No , man and woman are the same . Everything a man can do , can also be done by a woman .
Yes tell them king. I'm kinda attracted to your feminine energy 😍
