I'm always a fan of publication date order and that's how I'm reading the Cosmere books too. So I started with Elantris and was prepared for the worst because everyone is saying it's the weakest one. But I absolutely loved it! So when this is his weakest work, I can't wait to read more. 😄
Great to hear so many people saying nice things about Elantris. I really loved it. I do agree, that if you read his other series and then come to Elantris...you can see some of its weakness, but that happens with EVERY good author. They just get better at their craft (at least he has). I read it again in 2020 and still love it.
I hate that new Sanderson readers can’t dive into the awesomeness that is the Stormlight Archive. By far his best writing. But yeah the later Stormlight (and Mistborn) is more Cosmere connected than his previous books.
It took me 2 years to get through the way of kings (I was not participating in internet forums or anything, just reading it on my way to work sometimes). I have found it incredibly long. Then at the end the story got so interesting that I bought the second book immediately. And then I had to re-read it all eagerly because I forgot how it started :D. It's a slow burn.
Great video. Sorry for the wall of text, but this was my Cosmere reading order, after doing a LOT of research on this. I'm currently on Rhythm of War, and hooked on Cosmere! :) Regarding White Sand, you want to read White Sand 'Prose' which is the text version of the graphic novel. *** Elantris *** - Elantris - The Hope of Elantris (Short Story - Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection.) - The Emporer’s Soul (Novella - Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection.) *** Mistborn Era 1 *** 1. Loved the video. Definitely helped me push through the intimidation of starting to read in the Cosmere. Just read Elantris and then followed up with the novella and short story based on your recommendation. Loved Elantris and if Sanderson just gets better I’m so stoked!
I’m currently reading Way of Kings and listening to Warbreaker and so far loving both. I started off with Mistborn era 1 and loved book 1 but less so for book 2 & 3. I also participated in the Kickstarter.
Book 2 in Mistborn era 1 was one I didn't love on first read and is now one of my favorite Sanderson books period lol but I also loved the third book on a first read so this might not be the case for you. I just loved all the character development in that second book!
Totally didn't need this video in my life, because I've already read all of the Cosmere, but you know... I just love hearing you talk about anything Sanderson related haha 🤩 I 100% agree that Elantris deserves more love!! I am actually really eager to reread that one... And now that I am thinking about it, I think I might just reread the entire Cosmere somewhere in the coming year, because why the heck not 😝🌌
I liked Elantris and it wasn’t even my first lol. I’m looking forward to the next Mistborn and I ended up getting the ebooks for next year. I just didn’t want to miss out 😆🌌
I've read way of kings then mistborn 1. I liked mistborn more but I feel like storm light could be a major fav if I could just follow along with all the damn details it has. As for order, I did Way then Mist but wish I started with Mist. 🌌
I think Mistborn is a more fun series for me even though Stormlight is one of my all time favorites. I just re-read both and was surprised at which books I ended up enjoying more
I'm doing mostly publication order, but I've skipped Elantris, so now I have to figure out when I'm gonna slip that one in. (In case anyone's wondering, I'm currently on Warbreaker, and I'm flying through it.) 🌌
I usually say Mistborn Era 1 first, but after hearing your recommendation, I actually really agree. Publication order seems to be a great way to go. I think when I first started reading it was Final Empire, Elantris, and the I finished Era 1 and didn’t read much more until Alloy came out. After that I got caught up on pretty much everything else (except the novellas. I still haven’t read those) and now I’m just reading them as they release. Great video. -T
I just think publication order is usually the safest route if you are going for the multiverse experience, but I am also super biased since its how I did it 😅
I've read The Emperor's Soul twice...and it is just an amazing story. It is worth buy Arcanum Unbounded, just for that story, but the rest of the stories are great...so it is a win, win, win, win, etc.

If I don't like The Final Empire (2006), I will jump to The Emperor's Soul (2012) and see if I like that one better.
This is very similar to my reading order, I’m in the middle of Final Empire right now. But I didn’t think to include the Elantris novella/short stories
Book2 on mistborn. Going to do all and then maybe stomlight. But should I commit all stormlight before era2.. its just a lot of books. Plan was all mistborn this year then the rest
Thank you. I, too...got into Sanderson early. I've read them all (the Cosmere), and pretty much in publication order. I read Elantris first, then Mistborn Era 1, then Warbreaker. At that time (and now), became a Sanderson fan. I've loved everything that he's done within the Cosmere. I have to say, I'm not really that good at finding ALL the connections, but when I do find them...I'm like a kid in a candy store. I usually stay away from Reddit forums and such, but have read most of the Cosmere multiple times. I then read all of Mistborn Era 2 (that has been published to date), and cannot wait for the fourth and last book in this Era. So excited. It took me, three tries to get into The Way of Kings. It is a HUGE story...and I kept getting lost in the multiple beginnings (getting bogged down with all the characters). I would get to about 20-25% and set it down. BUT, when I did get past it...it only took me 5 days to read the book. I started TWoK on June 1st...and finished Oathbringer on June 12th, 2020. I then reread the series again...when Rythym of War came out. Started on October 13th, 2020 and finished Rythym of War on November 19th. What an amazing month of Sanderson. Ugh. I've also read all the novellas and short stories. Not all of the stories hit with me, but I love the way his mind works...and how he will be able to bridge these stories to tell a cohesive story...some day in the future. Honestly, one of the things that I'm most worred about...is that I will live long enough to read all the books within The Cosmere. Knowing Brandon Sanderson...he'll be able to do it, but I'm 56 years old. It is going to take time...like 20 years (possibly). What an EPIC achievement. Kudos. About the Kickstarter. I only got the eBooks and Audiobooks. The swag and the other stuff are great, but not my "cup of tea". This was my first foray into the Kickstarter world...and what a great one to do...especially if you love his work. I haven't looked into the stories, not even listened to him read the first six chapters of the first secret project...I like to experience them by myself...in my imagination. 2023 is going to be an amazing year...above and beyond all that he is able to publish for his regular job. At this moment he has raised $28,487,085 with still 17 days to go. What an amazing achievement. I'm just curious what he's going to do with it. It isn't like he needs anymore money. BUT, it does show that his commitment to his LOVE (writing stories) is being rewarded. I look forward to his NEXT secret project, 'cause the man is a machine. I do wish that he would rub up next to George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss...so that they'd get infected by whatever it is that makes him SO prolific. Oh, well...a man can dream. Thanks for this video. Really enjoy your views on the Cosmere. I pretty much agreed with everything that you've said. For me, publication order is the best way, but whatever catches your fancy...and Bob's your uncle. Again, thanks.

Yea translations can always be hit or miss, sometimes the ebooks (in the US) go on sale for pretty cheap but I totally get not wanting to pay for a genre you don't read much. Warbreaker is free on his website I believe if you want to try that!
I jumped in with Mistborn and had NO IDEA what I was getting into lol I didn't know what the cosmere was at all and once I started to figure it out I was like WTF! lol
