Maybe have the final boss key be hidden behind a gauntlet of five mini bosses (one for each Kong). Each Kong can go into a room and use their skills to beat each mini boss to unlock a chamber that holds the boss key.
The coins should’ve been used to unlock a final cheat, something that would make going for them actually worth it, like invincibility and boosted speed for each Kong. Would make future playthroughs FAR more bearable. Especially the races with the wretched rabbit and evil beetle. I say the battle crowns should’ve been used to get the final key instead.
If I was in the dev team and my boss told me that it would be required to get those coins, I would make it so that only one of the two coins was required. Either one, so the player had a choice. While the Diddy Cabin was the golden banana that took me the longest to get, the Nintendo coin was hell to get.
I think one of the worst things about the DK arcade game challenge is that unlike the normal version of the arcade game, which can be played in the bonus menu, The version in Frantic Factory forces you to do it with ONE LIFE, instead of the normal 3 lives. meaning a single mistake can take a while to get back to where you were considering you have to pull the lever every time you need to restart and then work back to where you were. Not to mention you have to beat the game a second time on a harder difficulty, still with one life, to actually get the coin. Thank god they didn't force you to go through the first loop of the game when doing the Nintendo Coin challenge. Jetpac is much easier in comparison since there are no changes to the base game, 3 lives and only needing to beat the challenge once. All you need to do is get 5k points, I just stayed on the first level grinding enemies and gathering the bonus items for the points.
You can still get 1ups in Donkey Kong Arcade by getting a high enough score. That's easier said than done if you are not good at the game. Here's some tips: 1. Go for the items from 50M onwards. They give you bonus points. 2. Don't ignore the Hammers; if you can get a good chain going with a Hammer, you can rack up a lot of points. 3. Speedrun strategies from the NES version will not work as the obstacles move faster in the Arcade version. Don't take risks.
Yeah, that part really confuses me. If they left in the 3 lives, I think a lot more people would see the challenge as tough, but fair. You'd at least have time to get familiar with what mistakes you can or can't make. Getting to 75M and then dying from a fall, then getting reset completely is so depressing, I totally get the rage at that.
I'll never understand this! They shouldn't have changed how many lives you start with. I've tried stacking up points to gain more lives in the past, but sometimes I die just trying to do that lol. I'd rather just go for it with one life
My dad said he used to play it in the arcade with my mother years ago. Naturally, when my dad seen it was in DK64 when I was a kid, he wanted to play it. Little me couldn't do hard mode so I gave it to him, optimistically expecting him to be sloppy and take a while but no kidding, he beat hard mode first try. After that me and my dad played it for hours in the mini game section of the main menu, he showed me a lot of tips and witnessed the game difficulty reset after he hit lvl75 or something like that. After that experience I never really had a problem playing this section again, my dad seasoned me to it and to this day, my dad still has the hi-score on my N64 cartridge
I'll do the opposite: imagine having to get these 2 coins only to then reveal behind the coin door was one final mini game barrel to get the last key....and the game is beaver bother
As a kid I played the entirety of Donkey Kong '94 for the game boy and since I had beaten it I was very confident when my friend mentioned he was having issue with the DK64 Arcade game part and I basically said "No sweat, I can beat it for you." When I tried that's when I learned I had been playing a a greatly improved remake that was nothing like the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Got a really nasty shock when I tried to do a side flip and hand stand and nothing happened. Then I got an even nastier shock when I fell like 2 inches and died. I was not able to beat it for him :( . I did get DK64 a decade later and beat it then.
JetPac was alright for the most part as it was pretty forgiving to get the Rareware coin, plus you only had to do it once. As for the DK Arcade, lets just say its stuff like this why they invented Save States... They shouldn't have been made mandatory to complete the main story though, maybe give some other optional reward like playing as Krushaa in the main story mode or something. Also to this day I'll never understand why Sakurai included 75m into Smash and not the miles more iconic (and appealing looking) 25m to represent the DK Arcade game.
The DK arcade segment was the bane of my existence for 20 years, if I were to change it I would just include the first second and final level and remove the third and not let the player die after the first hit
For a mini boss in Hideout helm, there’s this giant red klaptrap shown in the cutscene before Creepy castle that never appears after. It could be guarding the final boss key. I imagine K Rool being devious enough to set this as a trap for the Kongs, knowing they are after the keys.
Fun fact: on my childhood DK64 cart, I have 100%. Not 101%! 100%. Everything else of note, 200 golden bananas… and 1/2 coins. I was able to get the banana fairies in the room locked by the coins by just peeking through the window- which got me the “201st” banana. But I never beat DK arcade nor DK64, because whoever decided to make it a ***SINGLE LIFE CHALLENGE*** has a special place in hell waiting for them. It’s called Beaver Bother. That’s the hell they’re going to.
My father used to hang out in Arcades im his youth. He claims he had the high score for Mis PacMan at his Arcade. Anyways he beat down both Jetpack and Donkey Kong Arcade within a few minutes as he mastered both games in his youth. So getting these coins was no problem as a kid for my brothers and I. Plus my dad made sure we all mastered the Donkey Kong game. My dad even bought a 3rd party Arcase stick controller for playing DKA in DK 64.
too bad he never played donkey kong on gameboy, that one is the best version since it has so much chapters i never got to beat it as a kid i think i made it to 6-2. id like to play it again someday but i might emulate it.
I mean I've beaten the DK arcade game many times in my life, but I swear, the way it controls in DK64 is somehow worse, took me far longer to beat it in DK64 than it ever has in any of my many other wins of the game. Genuine question: have you played it in DK64 or are you only assuming it's a full 1:1 experience? Because I am nearly certain that it is not.
That fall damage is outrageous, if you land a single pixel below the platform you've jumped from, you die, and guess what? They're elevators, which make them MOVE UP AND DOWN! This was very frustrating on my childhood.
You can avoid the springs that fall down and the second flame on the third level, you just have to jump on the second elevator near the top then immediately run and jump to where Mario is at 4:53 definitely can still be a run killer, but then you only have one more hard spot before the fourth level.
I didn't mind it very much but I am biased because A) I only played DK64 once and recently too, so I just wanted the coin just to have it and B) I have played quite a bit of the original DK arcade game so I knew the "tricks of the trade" so to speak. I was surprised to see that both the N64 and Rare coin were required. If I was a kid playing DK64 in the early 2000's I'd definitely agree with you more lol.
I'll be that one person, DK OG just looks uninteresting to me. Games like that is what I *DON'T* play. I'd rather be forced to finish the original Dragon Quest. Atleast then I'd have a fun time.
I would still keep them required, but set them behind a boss each. You're going into Krool which is a gauntlet fight, so a couple of bosses to make sure you really know the moves is a good idea.
I admit i did struggle a bit with the DK arcade. but there was always this cool aspect of it in the back of my mind. Growing up hearing from my parents about the original mario and DK they knew in their days. and finally seeing it for myself the first time playing this game within a game was awesome as a kid. Finally gitting gud as they call it nowadays and beating it felt great. DK64 will always be one of those games i remember from my childhood
My suggestion is to make donkey Kong also score based. The coin be score based, and completing the levels gets you the banana. Also cut out the fade in and out screen with dks slow af lever pull as well. Just have it where it automatically fades to black interacting with it again, or just offer a retry screen on failure. Even if it just keeps the one life that would be significantly better, but I'd also wish they'd just give you 3 lives for it.
As a kid me and a friend would play jetpack and giggle at the electronic fart sounds the game makes and it's on of my fondest dk64 memories funny enough. Something that's wild to me is you get access to both those coins at the same time in the game, but they knew it would be so hard to get both of them they made it a skill check at the end of helm. Even with FF gauntlet platforming difficulty increase it's wild they put one of the hardest challenges in dk64 in level 3. They could've even made it that if you pay extra coins you get an extra life or something, anything to make it slightly easier. To this day I've never beaten the DK arcade on vanilla hardware, I hate it that much
Move the coins to Crystal Caves (Rare) and Creepy Castle (Nintendo), move the arcade cabinet to Cranky as a 20+ banana medal reward, and have no collectables in either game since they should feel like a reward.
It’s the time it takes to reset between tries of the Donkey Kong arcade that got me as a kid. I beat it once and left. Eventually forced myself to do it again so I could finally beat the game.
Honestly this is one of the reasons why I've decided I don't want to replay this game any time soon. I was a huge fan of this game when I was a teenager, but now looking back I see that nostalgia was the reason I used to really enjoy this game. But nowadays I just can't, not only does this game have a lot of collectibles, it also forces the player to collect these two coins, which are a pain in the a**, to beat the game. These two minigames aren't nearly close to fun, they only made me extremely furious and that's it. Idek why the creators of this game thought it would be a good idea to prevent players from beating the game by forcing them to have collected those coins, but that's just not it
The thing about arcade Donkey Kong is that once you clear it for the first time for the coin, subsequent playthroughs only have you adapting to the mobile flames on stage 2 and 4... I had a lot more trouble with Jetpac until I realized that it's easier to zip across the screen and grab all the parts/fuel instead of trying to take it slow and careful.
I heard once that the DK Arcade was improperly ported and that the springs don't launch themselves at the player correctly, leading to them not having a good pattern. Given how much of a cave game DK64 is, I wouldn't be surprised if this was accurate.
I remember having a lot of fun with Jetpac, while with the DK Arcade game, I quickly learned that my experience playing the Atari 2600 port wasn't enough to prepare myself for the horrors that awaited me trying to get the Nintendo Coin. So many hours of frustration as a kid, knowing I finished Hideout Helm but couldn't get to the final boss until I finish that arcade game. I did eventually pull it off, but always felt it was unnecessary to take what could have just been a neat bonus minigame and turn it into a mandatory part of the game.
I struggled to beat the Donkey kong Arcade, but as a kid who smashed through all the dialog, I had no idea that there was a coin inside of Jetpack until I was messing around one day and it spawned in the mini game. it took me forever to beat this game just because of that 1 coin I could never find
The Rareware coin was leagues easier than the Nintendo coin. The harder version of DK arcade was way too hard for me as a kid. Took me several tries before I finally did it.
You were randomly suggested to me by the algorithm... but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far! Finished your "worst golden banana" video before coming here. Keep going - good voice, good commentary, fine editing! Fun fact: I didn't understand what was going on with the two coins. I just randomly played the Rare game and unlocked that coin... but then accidentally missed Cranky's dialogue after, and (wrongly) thought he said if I got a higher score, I could get the Nintendo coin. So... never beat DK64 as a kid lol. Truly, a terrible idea for completing the main game...
I agree with every part of this video, while the beetle, rabbit, and Beaver Bother were what killed my hopes of reaching full completion as a kid, the monstrosity of the DK arcade game is what kept me from reaching the end of the game. It doesn't give me much trouble anymore, but as a kid I remember sitting down with my dad and enlisting him in my crusade to get that damn Nintendo Coin, and that horrible feeling when we found out we only got the EASY reward was just crushing. Over the years I've gotten good enough to where while 75m used to give me all the trouble (because of the last dash to Pauline), nowadays 25m gives me more trouble due to the unpredictability of the barrels halfway up.
i think a simple change would be simply remove the coins required to play the DK game, that way if it ended up taking a bunch tries you wouldn't potentially run out of the coins and have to leave to go get more, but a more impactfull change could be simply give you the banana and tbe Nintendo coin at the same time instead of making you play the game twice
I think the most jarring thing about the Donkey Kong Arcade is how primitive the controls are, particularly in the context of a late '90s 3D platformer. Jumpman feels like a senile old man, what with his poor speed, weak jump, post-jump delay, and inability to fall a few inches without breaking his bones.
Donkey Kong was alright but also probably because I had that game both on oldschool systems and gameboy and played it to death. Jetpack, however, was brutal. The first stage was easy, the second throws you for a loop and by the third stage you're just anxious because it doesn't take much at all to lose all your lives. These coins stop blocked me from the end game for a ridiculously long time because I did not have DK64 as a teenager. That was the period where a messy separation from my abusive dad meant I lost my entire N64. I didn't play these games until later in life and they WERE a lot easier, but god are they unnecessarily difficult and simultaneously unnecessary as a roadblock.
When I first played the game on the Wii U (VC), getting the Nintendo Coin was almost my breaking point of resorting to use the built-in save state. Didn't do that, and finally beat it.
I played this game when I was like 10, and don't remember having any issues with either of these coins. When I think back on it, I just remember it as a cool little reference to the two companies' history. I think you might just be bad tbh
I had an idea for a new character in a remake of this game named Kollector. He's a rich Kremling who loves Banana Coins. He would sell both the Rareware and Nintendo Coins so it's an alternate way to get them. Other ideas I had for things he would sell: 1. Bonus Barrel Freebie Tickets 2. His own Golden Bananas 3. Addition Melons 4. A Tag Anywhere type of item. In addition he would have his own collectible for you to get, gems that Krushas have. 1 in each level as well as DK Isles.
@superjoebros64 well it gives incentive to actually collect all the Banana Coins. You really only need maybe 20% of them so at the end they're not useful.
It was 2005 and I was 13 when I finally beat the DK arcade. My brother and I had already had DK64 for a few years when I decided to go back practice the arcade game til I figured it out. I remember only getting a golden banana for it the first time. Rather than giving up, I figured I beat it once, so I could beat it again. And I did! The very next time, if I recall.
One tip for the third level to avoid the Springs near the end at the top: run to the left of the ladder. There's a small space that the Spring jumps over. I know it's tempting to finish the level by climbing the ladder as fast as possible - and that's exactly how I've lost a lot of times with just one pixel interaction from the Spring!
Yup, Level 3's second flame enemy is the worst aspect of the Arcade Game. It refuses to leave the lower platform until luck is on my side. I recently beat the arcade game three times to see if anything secret popped up and ohmygosh, will not attempt anytime soon. It seemed even harder! Pretty brutal throughout all levels with how enemies & barrels chase you down. I adore the flame that forces you to get a running start at the beginning LOL K. Lumsy was so lovable that younger me kept at it for his freedom xD I agree that the best option would just be limiting the keys to bosses. I actually wouldn't even mind Jetpac being the only requirement with the Rare coin. The arcade game, in my opinion, should have just been a fun unlockable along with DK Jr. if they really wanted. I will most likely beat arcade DK again if the game hops onto Switch but glitches are tempting haha Awesome video!
I let a kid in my class borrow my copy because he said he could get me the Nintendo Coin. Waited for like a month and while he did give the game back, he didn’t even get the coin. Kinda wonder if he just wanted to try the whole game or something.
I absolutely couldn’t get the Nintendo coin as a kid. I tired over and over and my brother got so sick of it that eventually I gave up completely. I FINALLY beat it in college years later. The game said I logged 80+ hours. Yeah, I don’t care for it much.
I wouldn’t mind having physical versions of the coins. Getting them from old games in the game was unique but there’s no way to really know you should be looking for them. It also felt odd that only 15 medals were needed and they don’t serve any other purpose afterwards
Getting the coins could allow you to swap kongs anytime without a tag barrel. (Some special places and boss fights would disable it) There, I fixed 2 problems with one move.
That Nintendo game is why I was able to 100% the game before beating it. The first time through for the banana was a wall enough, but not knowing that the Nintendo Coin was behind it had me putting that particular banana off for easier ones. It was the last banana I collected 😆
My issues are not even the difficulty or the mini games. My issue is, as you already mentioned, the fact that the coins are needed, but nothing tells you they are. The dialogues asking you if you want to try them makes them SEEM optional, until you hit that door to key 8. And then, for the Nintendo coin, you have to go back to an earlier level you probably finished ages ago, just find that arcade machine. Fun! (Also, nice Jontron reference.)
The simple change of making these coins a neat Easter egg/secret instead of mandatory would make such a huge difference Using banana coins is a cute idea cause it's like using a quarter on the og arcade machine. Doesn't mean it won't infuriate me 😂
I really hate how the arcade kicks you out of the game each time you lose then you have to sit through the Gorilla Grab animation as well as the screen zooming into the game for some reason. That's like 10 seconds each time just to do one thing
Giving the player 3 lives like in the original, instead of a single life, could easily help make the Donkey Kong arcade more bearable. Also, making it optional would work too.
I mean, for the rareware coin, you can also just sit a certain way on the cliff and hold the shoot button, you'll defeat enough enemies to get enough points, i dont remember if thats level 1 or 2 though
I actually enjoyed the DK arcade game as a kid, I thought it was a fun challenge. I remember it was hard, but it didn't take me an agonizing amount of time. But I was pretty young, so I might've just been more tolerant back then
"Git gud" I guess. I love DK arcade game and played the NES port all the time at my grandparents, and the Nintendo coin took maybe 4 tries before I got it. Jetpack was a lotharder for me because I kept hitting enemies and eventually just cheesed the first level getting additional bonus items until I got enough points.
If there's one thing I really like about the coins, it's their design. They both look really neat in the collection menu, it's just a shame that they're not used creatively in the final door.
I really don't think they are awful additions, BUT I don't think they should be required to get collectibles. Maybe as a bonus on the Main Menu screen to play when you would like? Being unlocked by completing certain objectives throughout the story.
0:15 To the two coins: I appreciate you, Barnacle Man! I recall spending a lot of time in FF playing the DK Arcade. It was tough as a kid but I remember loving it. As an adult, I don't find it too tough to get the Nintendo coin and am kinda surprised the reputation it has. I also remember playing Jetpac for hours in the DK Bonus section- it was so fun back then!
I really appreciate the dk arcade games inclusion for the sake of game preservation and that it makes you really get good at this historic and classic game, rather than just play it for 2 lives then leave because it feels old. But yeah its got major problems too
I got this game from a neighbor that sold it us It was early 2000s so no free internet access as a kid or get strategy magazines (I'm not from US so they were not common here), i had to ask him to help since I had to idea how to beat it to finish the game
3:25 regarding the jetpack controls, gonna mention this since I didn't see you doing it if this is your footage. Hold Z to hold a hovering height. Very helpful to prevent the constant up/down (pro-tip: it borrows from diddy's jetpack Z button hover)
I've played a lot of Donkey Kong so I got the Nintendo Coin first try. However, I did struggle with the platform level because in this game's version of Donkey Kong, Mario can hit his head on the moving platforms (which kills Mario) which is different from the NES version of Donkey Kong that I usually play (in that version the moving platforms don't have collision on the bottom or sides). I thought it was weird that these collectibles were necessary for beating the game though, I thought they would simply be extra collectibles for completionists since they're such unique collectibles. I 101%ed the game though so it didn't affect me much but I still thought that was weird.
I remember that as a kid, it took me an awful lot of time getting the Jetpac coin, I think I actually never got it myself and just watched my brother get it Playing the game on emulator a few months back, it took me some time to figure out that you only really need to get to level 2, then just stay on the bottom right corner of the screen and shoot whatever's coming at you, the 5k points will be here in no time. Then it's just a matter of reaching the coin and voilà As for the classic DK game, for whatever reason as a teen I tryharded the hell out of this game (maybe on a GBA classic collection, I'm not sure) so when I had to do it again on DK64, I legit beat it first try for the first run, and maybe two or three attempts for the second one. Level 3 is the only one that's actually hard, the last part where you have to go above the spring is a close call every time! I even found an old arcade machine while on vacation a few weaks ago that had a lot of classic games, including DK, so I gave it a shot, and that version only had the first and fourth levels, so it was easy enough to beat lmao
Donkey Kong should have been remade in 3D, with a whole inversion, where you're playing as Donkey Kong, climbing up to get to K. Rool. That would be a fun inversion of the experience, possibly with Kranky making snide remarks about the whole situation. The replay is total BS. Honestly, it feels weirdly lazy, in a game I usually defend, game design wise. (At least, as an artifact of the time. I welcome QoL mods these days, in a time where folks have the problem of more games than time)
I never beat DK64 because of the Nintendo Coin. I got to the point where I couldn't find anything else to do, so I kept trying for hours over many days but could never beat it.
I remember having a god damn nightmare of a time trying to get the coin, to the point that I put off the game for so long (Shoutout to Fungi Forest, for that matter) I was relieved to know I wasn't the only one struggling immensely.
I think it would have been better if they'd made the win conditions to get the GB from the arcade the one to get the Nintendo Coin and found a different puzzle for that specific GB.
These required coins are so brutal! What would you do differently?
make them not exist lmao
Maybe have the final boss key be hidden behind a gauntlet of five mini bosses (one for each Kong). Each Kong can go into a room and use their skills to beat each mini boss to unlock a chamber that holds the boss key.
Mine would just put the eighth key in K. ROOL'S chair. Have the 2 banana fairies behind the coins while making the DK game award both with a win.

While the Diddy Cabin was the golden banana that took me the longest to get, the Nintendo coin was hell to get.
Rareware Coin: Not super challenging, but a little stressful
Nintendo Coin: Death and Despair
😭😭😭 perfectly described
I think one of the worst things about the DK arcade game challenge is that unlike the normal version of the arcade game, which can be played in the bonus menu, The version in Frantic Factory forces you to do it with ONE LIFE, instead of the normal 3 lives. meaning a single mistake can take a while to get back to where you were considering you have to pull the lever every time you need to restart and then work back to where you were. And collect the coin. You could get 5000 points and die before the coin comes down for you to collect it
You can still get 1ups in Donkey Kong Arcade by getting a high enough score. That's easier said than done if you are not good at the game. Here's some tips:
1. Go for the items from 50M onwards. They give you bonus points.

@@X2011racerIronic isn't it? The player capable of getting enough points for the one up is often the one who least needs it.

your dad is an absolute legend.
Heck yeah that's awesome! W dad right here
I'll do the opposite: imagine having to get these 2 coins only to then reveal behind the coin door was one final mini game barrel to get the last key....and the game is beaver bother
WELCOME TO BONUS STAGE
oh gosh 😂
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Perfect opportunity to include Krusha in the story mode as a mini boss
Also the reward for winning is the last 2 banana fairies
Or that big red Klaptrap from that cutscene.
that'd be really cool! would love to see Krusha in the story somehow
just a small correction,; Jetpac is not an arcade game, it's a ZX Spectrum game. The ZX Spectrum being a home computer system.
@4:43
I see what you did there, and I am 100% glad that someone remembers that gag from his Bubsy vid. Subbed.
genuinely thrilled that people caught this 😂
That arcade is the sole reason I haven't beaten the game
It's cool but the worst 😭
I think a much simpler solution could work. Just swap the rewards. Normal mode gets the coin, hard mode gets the golden banana.
a person who thinks all the time
Whatever it takes to beat the game
As a kid I played the entirety of Donkey Kong '94 for the game boy and since I had beaten it I was very confident when my friend mentioned he was having issue with the DK64 Arcade game part and I basically said "No sweat, I can beat it for you." oooh nooo that's brutal 😭
The Gameboy game did have fall damage, but it wasn't as severe and had fun animations.
Should have had the two couns gate off Playable Krusha in the main game
I like that idea. I miss secret unlockable characters in games.
that'd be amazing!
4:07 WHY DIDN'T THEY USE 25M AS THE STAGE INSTEAD? IT'S SO MUCH MORE ICONIC I DON'T UNDERSTAND NINTENDO WHY
SERIOUSLY 😂 this one really puzzles me lol
My thoughts exactly
Honestly, it’s the fall damage that I hate the most. That happened to me during an early playthough and I couldn’t believe it.
Not just that, but Mario dies from like a 2 mm drop. It’s asinine.
I'm still in utter shock. HOW is that a thing??
@@superjoebros64because that's how it worked in the original game. 80s arcade games were specifically designed to eat quarters.
Turns out that design really only worked on said arcade game :D
JetPac was alright for the most part as it was pretty forgiving to get the Rareware coin, plus you only had to do it once.
As for the DK Arcade, lets just say its stuff like this why they invented Save States...
They shouldn't have been made mandatory to complete the main story though, maybe give some other optional reward like playing as Krushaa in the main story mode or something.
Also to this day I'll never understand why Sakurai included 75m into Smash and not the miles more iconic (and appealing looking) 25m to represent the DK Arcade game.
agreed all around! Getting Krusha would have been really cool and worth the challenge
The DK arcade segment was the bane of my existence for 20 years, if I were to change it I would just include the first second and final level and remove the third and not let the player die after the first hit
agreed! there's zero room for mistakes. Not a very forgiving challenge!
4:38 "They put falling damage in their mothereffin 2D platformer?!"
😂
For a mini boss in Hideout helm, there’s this giant red klaptrap shown in the cutscene before Creepy castle that never appears after. It could be guarding the final boss key.
I imagine K Rool being devious enough to set this as a trap for the Kongs, knowing they are after the keys.
Honestly that'd be great! Wish we got to see it more
Fun fact: on my childhood DK64 cart, I have 100%.
Not 101%!
My dad even bought a 3rd party Arcase stick controller for playing DKA in DK 64.
too bad he never played donkey kong on gameboy, that one is the best version since it has so much chapters i never got to beat it as a kid i think i made it to 6-2. id like to play it again someday but i might emulate it.
that's incredible! W dad right here
Skill issue.
Fair 😂
Bruh 😂
And what do you call someone that's stuck there for days? I think that's an obvious no matter what you try, you cannot get *ever* good.
Git Gud.
Those coins are the reason why it took me around 10 years to beat the final boss.
noooo that's rough 😭
Try 19 years for me.
I can never quite time it right 😭
I didn't mind it very much but I am biased because A) I only played DK64 once and recently too, so I just wanted the coin just to have it and B) I have played quite a bit of the original DK arcade game so I knew the "tricks of the trade" so to speak.
Atleast then I'd have a fun time.
dang I really need to learn more about any tricks to this challenge
We gamers have been forced to replay 75m so frequently, it might as well have Totaka's Song in it Superb review! JonTron joke FTW!🏅
It's torture 😭
So glad you like the Jontron reference haha
The sound effect of dying in the DK arcade game haunts me even 25 years later.
Never beat this game. Never was able to get the nintedo coin
that's the worst 😭
I would still keep them required, but set them behind a boss each. You're going into Krool which is a gauntlet fight, so a couple of bosses to make sure you really know the moves is a good idea.
not a bad idea!
0:15 "Nobody appreciates these two coins"
Me: That's why I'm so lonely 😭😭
You're not alone! Its nice to find another fan of them.
😭
To this day I've never beaten the DK arcade on vanilla hardware, I hate it that much
I like all of these ideas! Score based would go a long way. the original 3 lives would go a long way too!
Move the coins to Crystal Caves (Rare) and Creepy Castle (Nintendo), move the arcade cabinet to Cranky as a 20+ banana medal reward, and have no collectables in either game since they should feel like a reward.
Yeah, how little distance from the ground Mario used to make in the arcade and die... Now he can jump from great heights and still live :v
Having to pay with bananas if you wanted to play the Donkey Kong game again is just fricking ridiculous
For a developer made up of sadistic game design geniuses, compulsory DK arcade was the most sadistic thing Rare ever did
Seriously 😂
Idek why the creators of this game thought it would be a good idea to prevent players from beating the game by forcing them to have collected those coins, but that's just not it
I think it's time to start using glitches 😂
I loved the bit at 4:43 especially because the line before sounded SO familiar. Good one!
I try 😁 glad you caught it
The thing about arcade Donkey Kong is that once you clear it for the first time for the coin, subsequent playthroughs only have you adapting to the mobile flames on stage 2 and 4... I had a lot more trouble with Jetpac until I realized that it's easier to zip across the screen and grab all the parts/fuel instead of trying to take it slow and careful.
Zipping around Jetpac is so satisfying 😁
Agreed! If it was a neat bonus that gave us something like Krusha or cheat codes, we'd be far more forgiving
I struggled to beat the Donkey kong Arcade, but as a kid who smashed through all the dialog, I had no idea that there was a coin inside of Jetpack until I was messing around one day and it spawned in the mini game. it took me forever to beat this game just because of that 1 coin I could never find
I'm guilty of this too 😂
The Rareware coin was leagues easier than the Nintendo coin. The harder version of DK arcade was way too hard for me as a kid. Took me several tries before I finally did it.
seriously though. it's so unfair
Truly, a terrible idea for completing the main game...
awesome! welcome! glad you're enjoying this series 😁
I just can't believe how hidden these coins are. Not the best dialogue or hints.
Over the years I've gotten good enough to where while 75m used to give me all the trouble (because of the last dash to Pauline), nowadays 25m gives me more trouble due to the unpredictability of the barrels halfway up.
legend dad right here!
i think a simple change would be simply remove the coins required to play the DK game, that way if it ended up taking a bunch tries you wouldn't potentially run out of the coins and have to leave to go get more, but a more impactfull change could be simply give you the banana and tbe Nintendo coin at the same time instead of making you play the game twice
I think the most jarring thing about the Donkey Kong Arcade is how primitive the controls are, particularly in the context of a late '90s 3D platformer. Jumpman feels like a senile old man, what with his poor speed, weak jump, post-jump delay, and inability to fall a few inches without breaking his bones.
awful controls!
Not a miniboss. A *boss.* We *deserved* a boss remix of Hideout Helm and it's a crime we never got it.
I would absolutely use save states here haha
I played this game when I was like 10, and don't remember having any issues with either of these coins. When I think back on it, I just remember it as a cool little reference to the two companies' history. I think you might just be bad tbh
I had an idea for a new character in a remake of this game named Kollector. He's a rich Kremling who loves Banana Coins. He would sell both the Rareware and Nintendo Coins so it's an alternate way to get them. Other ideas I had for things he would sell:
1. Bonus Barrel Freebie Tickets
2. His own Golden Bananas
3. Addition Melons
4. A Tag Anywhere type of item.
In addition he would have his own collectible for you to get, gems that Krushas have. 1 in each level as well as DK Isles.
this is a cool idea! I'd be interested in it
@superjoebros64 well it gives incentive to actually collect all the Banana Coins.
And I did! The very next time, if I recall.
feels great to accomplish it!
One tip for the third level to avoid the Springs near the end at the top:
run to the left of the ladder.
There's a small space that the Spring jumps over.
I know it's tempting to finish the level by climbing the ladder as fast as possible - and that's exactly how I've lost a lot of times with just one pixel interaction from the Spring!
Agreed! I've tried this a few times and just can't time out when to climb the last ladder
The dk arcade is the reason I never beat the game as a kid. Sure I’m not the only one who’s experienced this 😅
Oh gosh. You are not alone
Lumsy was so lovable that younger me kept at it for his freedom xD
I agree that the best option would just be limiting the keys to bosses. I actually wouldn't even mind Jetpac being the only requirement with the Rare coin. The arcade game, in my opinion, should have just been a fun unlockable along with DK Jr. if they really wanted. I will most likely beat arcade DK again if the game hops onto Switch but glitches are tempting haha Awesome video!
agreed! Jetpac is actually pretty fun, it's way easier in comparison!
What I hated the most was the forced viewing of the animation to even start the arcade
ESPECIALLY AFTER THE 20TH ATTEMPT
I let a kid in my class borrow my copy because he said he could get me the Nintendo Coin. Waited for like a month and while he did give the game back, he didn’t even get the coin. Kinda wonder if he just wanted to try the whole game or something.
I always found it so annoying that the animation of DK pulling the lever and the camera flying towards the arcade machine took so long.
ugh seriously though. It just adds to the rage lol
Yeah that's a good point! Pretty pointless after 15
Getting the coins could allow you to swap kongs anytime without a tag barrel. (Some special places and boss fights would disable it) There, I fixed 2 problems with one move.
beautiful!
Agreed! The game doesn't do a great job of informing the player
Glad you caught the reference 😂
how to fix them: remove them from the game.
exactly 😂
The simple change of making these coins a neat Easter egg/secret instead of mandatory would make such a huge difference
Using banana coins is a cute idea cause it's like using a quarter on the og arcade machine. Doesn't mean it won't infuriate me 😂
agreed! It's needed.
this is a valid point! I do like the cute idea behind coin slots
i lovd your channel mte! talking about dk64, an imo underrated gem in such detail and with the editing, love it
Thank you! 😁 this game deserves all the love
I really hate how the arcade kicks you out of the game each time you lose then you have to sit through the Gorilla Grab animation as well as the screen zooming into the game for some reason. That's like 10 seconds each time just to do one thing
SERIOUSLY it's so torturous!
Giving the player 3 lives like in the original, instead of a single life, could easily help make the Donkey Kong arcade more bearable. Also, making it optional would work too.
Seriously though. That's an odd decision
The one golden banana I needed to finish the game was the one I couldn't get...
Noooo 😭
I mean, for the rareware coin, you can also just sit a certain way on the cliff and hold the shoot button, you'll defeat enough enemies to get enough points, i dont remember if thats level 1 or 2 though
True 😂
More specifically what makes the Nintendo coin so hard is that you must beat the arcade game on Level 2...starting with only ONE life!!
I actually love that it took me till i was 20 to beat this game.
It was such an epic feat when i finally did it.
it makes for a huge journey!
I actually enjoyed the DK arcade game as a kid, I thought it was a fun challenge. I remember it was hard, but it didn't take me an agonizing amount of time. But I was pretty young, so I might've just been more tolerant back then
Also more agile back then 😂 I'm not as quick as I used to be
"Git gud" I guess. I love DK arcade game and played the NES port all the time at my grandparents, and the Nintendo coin took maybe 4 tries before I got it. Jetpack was a lotharder for me because I kept hitting enemies and eventually just cheesed the first level getting additional bonus items until I got enough points.
this version of the arcade being my first time ever playing it. I didn't get the practice on other versions like some of you 😭
If there's one thing I really like about the coins, it's their design.
They both look really neat in the collection menu, it's just a shame that they're not used creatively in the final door.
agreed! I do like the design
I really don't think they are awful additions, BUT I don't think they should be required to get collectibles. Maybe as a bonus on the Main Menu screen to play when you would like? Being unlocked by completing certain objectives throughout the story.
agreed! there's room for great bonus content
I also remember playing Jetpac for hours in the DK Bonus section- it was so fun back then!
great reference 😂
I really appreciate the dk arcade games inclusion for the sake of game preservation and that it makes you really get good at this historic and classic game, rather than just play it for 2 lives then leave because it feels old.
But yeah its got major problems too
Agreed! I actually like the inclusion of it. Just wish it wasn't such a buzzkill of a golden banana
Hey, the DK arcade isn't doing it again, is doing it again ON A HARDER DIFFICULTY. But the DK arcade is of my favorite things to do in the game.
I already have a fix for this.
His name is Diddy Kong. Just use the secret cartweel through door move.
yes 😂
I got this game from a neighbor that sold it us
It was early 2000s so no free internet access as a kid or get strategy magazines (I'm not from US so they were not common here), i had to ask him to help since I had to idea how to beat it to finish the game
I bet it was like this for a lot of people too!
and the fact that when you mess up and want to restart quickly it takes him forever to pull the lever -_-
Why 😭 it feels like a waste of time
3:25 regarding the jetpack controls, gonna mention this since I didn't see you doing it if this is your footage.
Hold Z to hold a hovering height. Very helpful to prevent the constant up/down (pro-tip: it borrows from diddy's jetpack Z button hover)
definitely, great tip! the controls feel a little wacky at first but once you find the sweet spot it isn't that bad.
Jumpman feels like a senile old man. He has terrible agility and can't fall more than a few inches without breaking his bones.
Amazing description 😂
The Nintendo Coin is the reason i still have never beaten DK64
“You don’t deserve to Donkey Kong”
Noooo 😭
They would have made for better bonus content!
The Jetpac arcae game was hard for me mainly because I didn't know you could shoot lasers.
Oh gosh 😭 that sounds awful
Just, lock the 201st banana behind it, or a 202nd one, there ya go
I remember that as a kid, it took me an awful lot of time getting the Jetpac coin, I think I actually never got it myself and just watched my brother get it
Playing the game on emulator a few months back, it took me some time to figure out that you only really need to get to level 2, then just stay on the bottom right corner of the screen and shoot whatever's coming at you, the 5k points will be here in no time. Then it's just a matter of reaching the coin and voilà
As for the classic DK game, for whatever reason as a teen I tryharded the hell out of this game (maybe on a GBA classic collection, I'm not sure) so when I had to do it again on DK64, I legit beat it first try for the first run, and maybe two or three attempts for the second one.
I'm really thankful that Jetpac is more relaxed! Farming up points in the first 2 levels is golden
Yeah, they could have gone for "complete X levels" instead but chose the easy route, we were kinda lucky 😌
I welcome QoL mods these days, in a time where folks have the problem of more games than time)
@4:43 what would a platformer be like without platforms?
I never beat DK64 because of the Nintendo Coin. I got to the point where I couldn't find anything else to do, so I kept trying for hours over many days but could never beat it.
I died SO MANY TIMES to falldmg. Thw springs were no problem but that two jumps on the elevators. And that shit has a timelimit!
I feel this 😭
I remember having a god damn nightmare of a time trying to get the coin, to the point that I put off the game for so long (Shoutout to Fungi Forest, for that matter) I was relieved to know I wasn't the only one struggling immensely.
You are not alone!
Arcade round 2 could unlock disco Chunky, Dixie Kong mode for Tiny and maybe 8-bit Donkey
ugh why can't we have this. that'd be amazing
I think it would have been better if they'd made the win conditions to get the GB from the arcade the one to get the Nintendo Coin and found a different puzzle for that specific GB.
Agreed!
See, the Donkey Kong coin is fine. The one I had issues with was the one in Gloomy Galleon, absolutely hate that one.
