AFD Tone(s) Marshalls AFD100 & JCM800 SIR #36

- Same guitar, same cab, same mic that was not moved between recordings. I set amps equally
p7 b5 m5 t7 v4 g5-6. I matched gain on both amps, AFD100 was closer to 6 and JCM with my mod #36 was close to 5.
AFD100 power was set at 50w to match my JCM 2204(50w)
I tried to play parts equally with both amps, including riffs and leads on both pickups.
Whatever you may like better it's a matter of personal taste ;)
Thanks to Duke and Staal from Metroamp forum for helping a lot to mod my JCM. Cheers guys
Please take a look at this videos where I test each amp with different speakers

The AFD sounds like a good Marshall head playing through those bad MG series can speakers...the JCM 800 is more crisp and sounds identical to the original Slash tone.
danielandhisguitar
Exactly
JCM800 sounds exactly like AFD album, however AFD100 has great sound too
This, honestly, is one of the best tones/ playing ive seen together. You pull these songs off really well! So jealous of your gear!
Both have great tone, but I think the AFD sounds just more polished, thicker and a little more like the tone on the album. Which is amazing after all, because the album has been mixed. Good job!
That AFD 100 is the tone dude! The 800 is too thin and distorted.
I heard it instantly!
Actually the afd is too thin...
The 800 sounds too harsh and trebly
Sounds like the 800 is compressed at the higher end while the afd is open; more frequencies up top
I think the JCM800 is wobbly and loose in the tone, I feel it looses a full collected sound if you know what I mean? Feels like it can not keep up with everything that’s going on and drops and looses tightness and gets wobbly and disoriented hehe :)
I think the AFD100 is alot better sounding. The JCM800 is way to harsh sounding. Especially in the top end.
totally agree..his settings were slightly off i think
AFD has 6550 vs the EL34’s in the 800
IMO the moded jcm is closer to the original sound that's on the album.Although the approach to the sound from both amps is fantastic.Well done!
You by far have the most accurate AFD tone mods that I have heard so far, I have a '76 2203 MV that I would love to have you mod with both the #34 & #36 mods
Listening through high quality headphones I can hear that the JCM is a lot noisier. The AFD has way more clarity and is more detailed especially when comparing dynamics. The JCM sounds scratchy compared to the AFD. It sounds to me that the AFD uses some built in compression or either uses way better components. Either way the AFD is a hands down winner for me.
Both great amps no doubt about that. The AFD100 has a deeper and more crunchy sound which is definitely closer to the original Appetite For Destruction's. The JMC800 however is closer to the Ritz's sound, more metallic and juicy. I personally prefer the AFD but this is just my opinion
Basically if the afd100 wasn't around now the 800 would nail it pretty well, can't go wrong either way the amps sound amazing
Both sound great but I gotta say the JCM still takes the win, man that's an awesome amp!! Great playing too mate!!
much more gain on the JCM800, it's obvious comparing the 2 sweet child intros. They both sound really good but they're different so there's no best
it had seymour duncan alnico pros in it not paf humbuckers. that was one of the reasons why slash decided to put them in all his other guitars afterwards. btw great demo, and the jcm 800 does sound like his live illusion sounds like someone mentioned!
the jcm's fuzz is nice, and the punchiness of the AFD is just right
Yep. The JCM 800 is hands-down way better. You can hear how much more open the tone is. The notes are a bit more "trebley" I guess, for lack of a better word. Hard to improve on perfection -- the Marshall JTM, JMP and JCM 800 series amps are probably the best hard rock/heavy metal/punk/core amps ever built...
I listened to this on a few different speakers and the JCM800 just sounds better IMO.
Great video. IMO people forget that appetite tone is not actually that distorted. It’s the high end harmonics of slash’s tone that make you think it’s more distorted than it is.The AFD100 has this. The JCM doesn’t quite get there. AFD will sound more accurate if you set gain to 5 or less and master to 7 or 8.
The album was likely recorded with hard driven power amps, multiple speaker types, mic placements, room acoustics. Plus we forget about Izzy’s tone overlayed. There is also the tone you get by being a strung out 20 year old with gobs of talent. People should focus on that, and it will come through any amp.
That AFD 100 is sick AF…the tone is spot on
#36 sounds more like Appetite for destruction studio tone.Afd sounds more like modern slash tone.
man that #36 sounds sooo good
Great demo. The AFD is a little tinny to my ears; the 800 is the one I'd go for. If only I had that choice!!
Nice playing btw.
I prefer the JCM 800.
Really, the best afd sound on you tube!
The AFD is the sound of the SIR in a room, recorded on NEVE pre amps with a mic, EQ and compression. Like the record. The original amp was not available only the recordings which were processed already!
Modded JCM sounds more rude and sounds more like Slash's guitar parts for AFD album, except couple times that it was harsh treble wise but it might not be about amp itself. In conclusion, I think it sounds better than AFD100.
agreed
Great demo here, one of the best amp comparisons I have seen. Both amp heads have a fairly similar crunch, but for me the AFD sounds a little too compressed and processed, it has a great fat sound and nails the albums tone, but it sounds almost too perfect to my ears. The JCM 800 has the classic raw bite which I and I am sure may others dig. The presence and treble I would turn down a bit to add a bit more meat.
@AmnellAndreas thanks for the thought, my friend, but unfortunately I have no where close to the funds at the moment :( continue rocking!
AFD100 has got soo much more warmth, not as trebley as the JCM800 ! beautiful !!!
you seem to be quite the expert on these amps great job in doing quite the research (and experiment) to differentiate these two beats. That being said, I am looking into buying an amp in the future. I am a huge slash fan, and have been considering the AFD, but after listening for many years, i came to the realization that the slash tone I would like to get is His "live era 87-93" sound which from what i can tell is NOT his appetite sound but his early 90's sound. I believe this corresponds to
This vídeo deserves more likes!! Really enjoyed watching
Thanks for the video. I recently purchased the AFD100 and I just love the sound of it. I wondered what was the diference between the AFD and a JCM800 and here u show the diference.
What I noticed is that you use slight diference is the EQ as me. Normally my settings (on AFD100) are something like P 5,5 - B 6,5 - M 5 - T 4 and G 7. I put the Master Volume always on 7 and the Overall volume I play with the power atenuator. In your video I think the settings doesn't help the AFD100.
both very cool and you are a very good player, for my taste AFD is good to play a lot of things but i love the old GNR and the sound you get out from that modified JCM, i lovo it
imho the jcm800 sounds closer to the album, I am sorry to tell you
In my opinion maybe AFD have got better tone but JCM sounds just kickass
It looks like you are playing a Gibson Gary Moore. The Original ones from around 1999-2001 like I have really kick some ass!
I actually like both of these amps you were playing thru. I have a Mike Morin modded 1986 JCM 800 100 watt Master Volume, Black, with a grey face cloth.
Interesting. On you tube, the couple of Morin mods I have listened to all had a very extreme metal sound. The one I had made for me by him, does The Plexi, JMP, and JCM 800 thing, but with practically no hum, or hiss.
man... the afd sounds so good. Really.
the AFD sounds EXACTLY like the recording. jesus christ how much i want that amp
the jcm has more distortion which makes the afd 100 more clear but i like how the jcm has so much bite and balls to it
To get the exact same afd slash tone, i think the gain needs to be dialed back a little, and the treble should be rolled back too. Other than that, I'd say the jcm800 was closer
AFD: Tight and crisp and more features
800: Fuzzier and more noise. And more likely the amp used to record all the riffs this guy was playing.
AFD w6550 valves pure fire!
love the sound of the jcm800 the AFD sounds good too but the jcm is Just amazing!
Well... AFD was made after Slash used his JCM, so these both a great. AFD sounded more modern, and JCM gave that extra bite of punch. I choose both!))
The AFD does sound really nice and clean, but I'm all for the dirty old sound. JCM ALL THE WAY C:
Suprisingly I think I prefer the 800 over the AFD, but I'd still kill to have either one!!
That was totally awesome! Great demos.
Just bought a 1996 jcm800, wasnt sure if i made a right call on buying it since it is my first valve head, but when i heard him playin sweet childs intro i knew i will be fine ;)
+Ricardo Dias *1986
I think your assertion is correct". I"ve owned many Marshalls. My favorite is the JMP-1. and yes" the new marshall Transformers just dont react and "SCREAM" like the plexi or 800"s. The 59" Reissue didnt have the gain of course, but it did have the most warmth and depth of the pack! Everyones ears hear different" but I think Slash was right when he made the comment that "Just a basic simple Marshall(800?) is all you need"
overall i reckon that the AFD 100 has the most original studio sound as thats what they were trying to recreate when the made it, but the JCM has the true G'N'R tone when they played live as thats probably the model slash used
The JCM800 sounds a lot more scooped, with a more top heavy tone. It sounds a bit tighter in comparison to the AFD100. But the AFD100 just sounds like a mid heavy growling beast. That tone just slices you in half.
JCM800 #36 much better.
I had AFD100 but sold it and buy DukeAmps JMP '79 mods #34/#36. It sounds really like AFD then AFD100.
Very helpful, thank you!!!
Use and ABY box and run both those amps together! I think that will be the best AFD tone!
I love your playing !
i think AFD sound really great! is works to rythm and also to guitar solo! it sounds like actual slash.... but JCM! IT'S THE MONSTER! JCM sounds like the real slash in Guns N' Roses! when you're doin' a Guitar solo the JCM is the King!... AFD is nice, but JCM is the BEST!
@AxeNewbie But the Ritz was an Appetite concert and it was the appetite amp
Oh. Ah well. YOU TWO WIN THIS ROUND...
I didn't. I recorded everything on one amp and after on the other ; ), than edited the video to the sequences. But you have A/B boxes with load boxes that allows you to switch two heads on one cab.
nice playing. I have the AFD100 I love it, in your test it's a toss up both sound cool
They both sound great.
Both are awesome, but i prefer JCM800. It sounds really nice and, the most important thing is it sounds like an AFD album. AFD100 sounds kinda cool but I will choose JCM.
@PuroMojo TheJCM800 #34 mod is WAY better than the AFD or #36,greatdemo!
both sound great. The AFD is probably somewhat tighter with more bottom end.... I have a Mesa Stiletto Deuce which dials some JCM800 tones... but I might get a Marshall as well. The Stiletto has some JMP sounds as well, vintage stuff plus VERY nice cleans.
Btw, nice f'n setup you have! an 800 and a AFD. hard to beet that! and is very much eye candy!
AFD100's tone reminds me of The Ritz's sound :)
Bien joué PM
People do not realize that the piercing quality is what will get you through the frequencies of the rock band! Both sound great, but I believe JCM800 would be more appropriate on stage.
welcome to the jungle sounds good on AFD100, JCM 800 not much
I agree with you, this one of the first versions I was doing of the mod, please take a look at more recent videos with 2-3 channels mode MKII-#34-#36(AFD). Cheers
AFD100 all the way, your tone is better then perfect now hahah
Man" Both such GREAT amps! To me the 800 has more sustaining Harmonics? A close toss-up but I"ll take the 800!
FINALLY! Someone who can play welcome to the jungle correctly
Can I ask what cab you're using? I'm thinking of buying a JCM or AFD but I have no idea what cab to buy and there's no store near me that has a range to try. Yours sounds really awesome!
AFD wins by a hair. :-). One thing I can say for sure is that the AFD has absolutely NAILED the GnR AFD album sound. It's dead on brother. Dead on.
hevechvy lol wtf
slash used the jcm on afd bro
@@VenomExtremeEF no he didn't. Accordingly to what Glenn (a guy working for SIR) said, the amp Slash used was a modified version of a early 70s Marshall 1959 Super Lead, numbered #36. This was a replica of another modded 1959T Super Tremolo numbered #39. Slash used 39 for rehearsal before the official recording and 36 is what you hear in the album. They made another amp like 39 due to the high request of renting the 39 had.
it was a modified verson of the jcm, its on his book
Both are good amps...I'd recommend backing the Presence off a notch, both are just a bit too "Bright", not enough low mids. Between the 2, the JCM800 is definitely more convincing...the mids come through better. Of course all of that still isn't going to get the tone spot-on...3 important components missing: Saul Hudson, and the 2 PAF humbuckers that Derrig had in the guitar, that were present through the recording.
The AFD Model sounds nothing like the JCM 800 Slash used on Appetite. Marshall has also made it a Plexi, which doesn't make any sense at all. He was using a modded JCM 800 that belonged to the recording studio.
The AFD definetely comes closer to the sound, escpecially on the rythmns. the JCM800 is more tinty sounding whilst the AFD is warmer. And THANK YOU! Now I FINALLY know how to play the Sweet Child intro correctly, thanx 2 watching U! Also learned Night Train 4 the first time, by watching U! Never attempted it before. Is that an actual Gibson Slash AFD guitar? i'm asking, cuz i have achinese relica thats actually pretty awesome. Great playing and cheers!
very nice comparison great sound, for my is best sound the adf, jcm have more bass low middle and treble more fizzy, adf is more balanced tone but need more bass
@sitaromania yea but slash has his own technique in the amp and own set up what you don't get from the factory also it's count as a custom
The 36 is a more natural sounding amp.... cleaner If you put a SD-1 or TS in front More all around amp then just doing Slash Both Great Amps
Both cool but AFD all the way!! JCM800 sounds very loose IMO. The clarity and tone coming out of that AFD is awesome!!! With both heads you are good to go for any style though.
I think that JCM has much better tone for riffs and AFD for soloing. Overall I prefer the JCM has more raw than the AFD and has a fatter tone. Sounds more powerful too.
@lespaulman1 Yes, my JCM has 6550s. I agree with you both sound different, but great!
The JCM gives a bit more brown sound, the AFD makes trebles sound like its on a singlecoil guitar. Personal choice is the JCM
@rihnosaur and I also use a tubescreamer to get lead tone... Otherwise u wont have the distortion u want for leads
#36 to much saturation .. try lower the gain a little :)
@rihnosaur I have a JCM800 from 86. Mine has lots of crunch. Tubes in mine are EL34s. You probably did something wrong when u tried it. Have the master at around 4 and the pre amp volume at around 6 - 10 if u want crunch. The tubes do not need to warm up...
jcm800 is true to the original sound. the afd seems to sound like a sharper or a detailed version of it.
Sonido Original en JCM800= Presence 3.4-Bass 6- Middle 6-Treble 4- Master 3- Fre Amp 10 y AFD100= Power 10- Presence 4.5-Bass 6-Middle 6-Treble 4.5-Master 5-Gain 6.7 lo vi en un video que le hicieron (por Moshcamtv)
squeal-gasm at 1:07!!!!! music to my ear hole!!!! great review man..gotta agree thought the jcm 800 takes the title!!!! thanks for the info man! what exactly are these #34 mods etc tho????
Dude your playing is great
@TakkaTakkaDude Thank you very much!!!Awesome vid by the way!!!!
@videakiasful
it's called artificial or pinch harmonics, you perform this by plucking the string with your pick and thumb simultaneously more or less. just go ahead and try ;) for me they worked best on 5th and 7th fret when i started doing them..
I like JCM because it has a warmer tone to it. But then the AFD 100 has two different tone choices. But classic still wins
The JCM is better! Great demo, it was good to be able to hear the comparison.
The JCM I think has a lot more attack in it!! AFD100 got owned!!! :)))
@rihnosaur The sound LIVE from 87-93 is from the Marshall Silver Jubilee. On the other side since 1991 his studio sound is mainly from a modded JCM800 with #34 mod. I have some other video with that mod too, check it out if you want. But if you really dig his live sound get a Silver Jubilee or his first Marshall signature from 1996 the SL 2555, that it's a copy of the Silver Jub. Cheers
The AFD is definitely Slash in a can.
What kinds of mods did you have done to that 800? Extra 12ax7 slot? Sounds a bit "gainy" like a 900 to my ears. I'm not shitting on it or anything, it just sounds a lot different than my 4104 which is a 2204 circuit in a 2x12 combo.
The AFD sounds awesome, I wouldn't ditch my 800 but if I had the cash I might stack one right next to it!
Love the cut and of the 800 more but it has a little harshness in the top end that could use some taming.
Great Tone! I lke the JCM800 #36 better cause it has got a more powerful sound!
