I don't really know what it will be in the end, but the hype I did feel pretty much completely died when I saw that long presentation earlier this summer. I hope once it's out and we find out, that I'll be excited again...if not then I have a massive backlog...
I've been playing Skyrim since it came out. If Starfield is only just equal to OG Skyrim, I'll have another 12 years of fun gaming coming my way again.
I beg to differ. The ES games are known to be janky, stilted and inconsistent combat, they never update the engine and you can always count on NPCs doing that immersion-breaking lock-eyes-and-don’t-move thing with every single conversation in the game. They’re a sloppy company that’s always made sloppy games that happened to be good despite these flaws. I’m not as certain as everyone else seems to be that they can surmount these flaws - especially the nearly 20 year old game engine.
i hear the same thing every time bethesda puts a game out: fallout was oblivion with guns, skyrim was fallout with swords, now i guess we're at skyrim in space
If it comes anywhere close to playing like Skyrim / Fallout 4 did but drops you into a galaxy with lots of things to explore and find then I'm gonna be over the moon with it. Then it's just down to if the main story / side quest stories will hold your interest. Also, I bet some of those so called "barren" planets have some of the best vistas and locations which are just crying out for photos and videos to be made on them. Kind of like the series you used to do on Elite dangerous. Some of those Ice world planets you showcased may have been barren, but boy were the beautiful!
There's just SO much potential for modders, too. In previous titles, there was a lot more work involved in integrating new locations - and also compatibility problems between several mods trying to modify the same area to do so themselves. The whole model of traveling planet to planet (or even place to place on the same planet) throws that conflict out the window. (excepting mods wanting to touch static locations, like major cities...)
it's a Bethesda game, so im sure some aspects of Starfield will feel very familiar at times. but this is the first time they did a space game, i heard some people trying to call it a Mass Effect clone, but i don't get that vibe from Starfield at all. you could use No Man's Sky, but even that game is different.

I think what made Elder Scrolls and Fallout games more immersive than most RPGs (and what completely separates them from ED, NMS and SC) was that feeling that everyone around you had a life they were living whether the player was there or not. What broke that immersion was this issue of the player able to become the top dog in every faction they joined, and that the vast majority of the population knew who you were and what your mission was (i.e. "Dragonborn"). It shifted the reason for the NPC to exist from "they have their own lives" to "I exist to advance the player's quest". The story immersion became a parody of itself as a result. Based on what I've seen and read from Bethesda, it would appear that they have tried to strike a more balanced approach to a player's involvement with a given faction, so we may not be able to become the head of a dozen different factions at once, but that in some the opportunity to rise simply doesn't reach that high, or the player's involvement in a faction is always in the peripheral, rather than as a central focus of the faction itself. And though I have no direct evidence, I have repeatedly been left with the feeling that most the NPCs in Starfield don't know who you are, don't care, and that is not going to change with the progression of player quests and the like. I hope I am right about this, I think it's one of the primary immersion-breaking issues with both Skyrim and Fallout 4. Great video, as always.
I was playing Elite from Epic's free week up until about February before quitting the game due to FDev as well as the various toxic personalities I ran across in the Twitch ED space. Since then I've been swallowed whole by Tamriel, and have been playing ESV quite a lot. Starfield is EXACTLY what I've been jonesing for!!!!
What makes Bethesda games different is two things. First is the way they structure their missions and quests, both the main ones and the side quests. In many games the main quest is like a main road through a city, and the side quests are just dead-end side streets, or curved paths that bring you back to the main road, so you have the feeling you are being directed through the game. Mass Effect is a great example of this. In contrast, Bethesda games are structured like a maze with multiple entrances and exits, and you can move about as you wish. This gives the player a feeling of freedom and makes their games much more interesting. The second thing is their engagement with the modding community. They know how much modders bring to their games so they open the code and make tools available to encourage development, which attracts really talented folks. Just wait until some of the masters of modding get into this game - they will add amazing content and missions to all those “empty” worlds, which is precisely what Bethesda wants.
nice to see that not ALL of the game footage this time is pre-rendered, there is a tiny bit of actual gameplay in these clips, but they still have automated take offs and landings which are the same cutscene like thing every time
ive seen people even hype up the shipping system between outposts, but i guarantee it functions almost identically to supply lines between settlements in fallout 4, you will likely have to assign one your ships to connect two outposts together, and at that point, they share resources between them, there will be no system of managing that connection, and at most you will see the supply ship land and take off, you may even see them in space depending on how the space map functions, and you will sometimes see them at the other outpost, but if theres anything more than that to it, then ill be surprised
People are forgetting that developers create systems with the aim of reusing and expanding them for future projects. You should expect fallout + some new stuff "in space"
My only issue thus far is the inability to fly directly into the dead worlds. Primarily because what made Elite so great was flying over and traversing different topographies such as deep canyons or mountains. Either way, I’m still super excited
I'm in my 50s and at this stage of my life I'm not consumed with combat or quests. My thing is exploration and having conversations with my viewers. A little bit of questing & combat is ok, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really mean anything. Thus I hope that I am able to roam around without having an encounter every 60 seconds. No Man's Sky was good for that but didn't have much civilization which made it feel very desolate. Looking back I think Star Wars Galaxies, my first MMO ever, was just right as far as having several communities spread across each planet in between the barren areas. Graphics weren't too bad either. A little bit linear.
It's more Fallout 4 in space. FPS, Base Building, Resource Gathering, Weapon Upgrading and Crafting. I have it preloaded on Gamepass for PC and am super stoked to play it.
It's just funny that in various social media groups, people say "oh it's basically going to be skyrim and Fallout in space. Nothing ground breaking here" like saying it as an insult or something. I'm all good with it being like skyrim and Fallout in space. I've enjoyed many many hours in both those game iver the years with or without mods. So bring it on! I'm ready!
I’m amazed that anyone would NOT think that Starfield will be Skyrim/Fallout in space. You could only believe that if you had either never before played a Bethesda game, or if you are so focused on wanting a game like Star Citizen that you have convinced yourself that it will be that type of thing. Everything about it is familiar from other Bethesda games and I couldn’t be happier. This is the game I’ve been wanting from them since Morrowind.
When I see the mining and exploring and the jumping jetpack all I see is No Man's Sky...Rim. Which makes me happy to know those elements from that game are present in Stafield, because they make sense. I'm also really happy with the more arcade-ish space combat.
Skyrim is a masterpiece with a complex web of faction interaction and beefy quest lines. This is what they’re referring to in addition to basic forms of established civilization and essentially, government.
Lots of barren planets means modders have the chance to make settlements or even cities on them, with a good chance of not overlapping another mod. Thinking of all the house mods in Skyrim that used the same location/game cell.
I would so welcome a Skyrim in space. It’s all set in space with ships, planets, upgrades, missions, exploration…and more space sim players love. But, also add a MASSIVE open world limited only by the entire galaxy! This gives us as players so many potentially endless side quests of all sorts. Especially with Bethesda working with moders running with entire planets, galaxy’s as a canvas for the endless source of things to do. I’m truly excited to play Starfield, but also know Star-field will be my obsession, and will take up all my gaming time for months, years to come. My self and so many others Still jump into Skyrim to this very day; so many starts over and over again. Star Field could be much the same, but I see the game as just unending.
Very well explained! The dynamic AI in Bethsda RPGs was always something that set them apart from other RPGs in which NPCs where typically lifeless, stationary quest dispensers, (Bioware I'm looking at you!)
On the subject of barren worlds - I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those worlds have some secrets to discover and perhaps parts of some quests and maybe pieces of the artefact that the main story centres around.
I have high hopes for Starfield, partly because of my recent experience with Fallout 76. That game had a terrible launch, but it's been turned into an extremely fun and addictive experience over time. Even if Starfield has a difficult release, i'll be keeping the faith. 'Skyrim in Space' sounds like heaven to me, some people criticise Bethesda for not creating the best hand-made stories compared to other rpg's, but without a doubt they create the best worlds to explore and 'live' in
It's a small galactic playground. As soon as I can get a ship that can jump to Earth I'm going "home". Then I will go off on an adventure and look for a place I can call home. Only then will I start the story but at a slow pace and become immersed in what the game offers you. I hope it runs well on PC as I have built one that's recommended for 4k. 🤞
We've played Skyrim for 5 and even 10 years for some, now add 1000 planets and much more gameplay mechanics to it, we'll still be playing Starfield in 2040.
Fallout and Skyrim series have been the games I've sunken the most hours into and still, I find myself going back to them. Especially with the modding community support. These games constantly change and have new content. Bethesda is one of the best game studios ever IMO. Big shout out to all the amazing modders too of course. Starfield is going to blow me away. Been waiting my whole life for a space game like this. Now we just need atmospheric flight and ground vehicles....here come the mods.
I don't think a lot of people realize how much of fallout was randomly generated I expect that with a lot of skyrim type areas as well. Maybe even some procedural generation in there for the resource planets.
Will Startfield have neverending mountains where you walk, walk and walk across pathways that weren't supposed to be walk on to get to a cave or a quest marker?
It's very clear it's closer to fallout 4 in terms of systems than Skyrim. Maybe the quest variety and size and the world being populated would be more akin to Skyrim, but generally Fallout was also full of npcs and quantity doesn't alter features, it just means more writing and voice acting. The new stuff is ship building and space combat which I look forward to trying.
If 90% of the explorable universe was populated with life and lush planets it would be incredibly unrealistic, and also it would probably take 10 more years to develop
This, so much this. It's a ball of gas, a ball of rock, or a ball of ice. If it's a ball of rock and it's within a particular thin band around it's star, it might contain life. With a few possible caveats, that's it. 1/10 containing life? That's probably well over the actual percentage as it is. To have every planet, or even a majority, contain life would feel ridiculous (and one reason why NMS feels so . . . cartoony to me).
@@SuperWIDEgaming I agree! Even planets IN the goldilocks zone have a small percentage of containing life. I appreciate Bethesda for grounding the experience! Can’t wait!
Obsidian big fan since elite dangerous. going to grind hard in this game, super excited. I feel like this game is going to give me the exploration i miss from elite dangerous and ship building plus fun material farming from no mans sky. lets goo
Did you get a review code for Starfield? I just saw a channel with a little over 30K subs get one. It's a dedicated Starfield channel, but still. A channel of your size focused on space games should have one.
For me at least, there's a very clear line through Bethesda's mainline RPGs. They iterate, add new features (and remove others), but there's a very clear evolution. Looking at the mainline games only: * Morrowind: First 3D RPG made (not counting Arena and Daggerfall here). By Bethesda. Complex systems, closest to pen and paper RPGs. * Oblivion: Morrowind, but with more mainstream, streamlined systems and QOL additions. * Fallout 3: Oblivion, but with guns and companions. * Skyrim: Fallout 3, but with much better companions and a much more coherent world. Even more mainstream design. * Fallout 4: Skyrim, but with guns. Better FPS than Fallout 3, and now also base building and better crafting. * Starfield: Fallout 4 / Skyrim in space. And now also with Space Ships. Draws on elements from all their previous games. I don't find "Skyrim in space" to be a dismissive description, but rather see it as a culmination (for now) of the type of game they've been working on for 21 years. I'm very much looking forward to it, because I know and love the type of game that Bethesda makes, and I love the potential we get with modding, and a modding community with 21 years of experience working with their engine. But I'm keeping my expectations realistic. I expect "Skyrim in space" and nothing more or less than that, and I'm happy with that.
I'm hyped idc what people think, the videos they have put out aren't plastered with (not final product, subject to change) like Anthem did, so even if we basically just get what they've shown its still a lot and looks fun.
People said Fallout 3 (and later 4) were going to be just oblivion/skyrim with guns. Even if that ends up being the case (and I will argue it didn't end up being the case with my examples)? So what! Skyrim in Space sounds fun as hell.
I have never played a single Bethesda game yet I'm quite excited with the game. Some would day that's the reason because of bugs of whatever, but I always wanted a space RPG on this scale since I first played Mass Effect.
Once again, great insight provided by OA. Yes, game mechanics are same but the genres alone create their own game domains. Before PCs I played D&D, TSR’s Gamma World, GDW Traveller. You couldn’t compare game strategy and tactics in each environment even though they all used dice to arbitrate actions. So IMO Bethesda have covered off my preferred genres.
I plan on buying this game eventually, but I think it will not be in the first year or maybe two. Not just because I never really get anything the first year, but from what the system requirements look like.. A new pc will also be purchased.
Damn... I still need to decide if I want the premium edition or the regular one. Would help to know how much the expansion will be when it releases. :D
Skyrim had super immersive npc's they walked through the map to get to quest locations, always enjoyed stalking everyone going to and from the greybeard meeting many npc's have full daily routines, work & homeplaces, a inn to visit hell even a graveyard^^ I fear most starfield npc's in citys will be generic unnamed ai no point to follow them around or interact besides some simple loot^^
If only 10% of the 1000 worlds have activities and stuff to do thats still huge. And all those empty planets become blank canvasses for all the modders ready to get cranking on this game
The complexity is just astounding compared to something like GTA games, which are essentially just highly detailed open worlds with driving and shooting.

I never played a FO game until a friend said FO4 was basically 'Skyrim with guns' and I loved it. So 'Skyrim in space' is all I want!!!
Barren planets should be pretty boring but they should have rare unique events in them that make it worth exploring.
Skyrim is a masterpiece with a complex web of faction interaction and beefy quest lines. This is what they’re referring to in addition to basic forms of established civilization and essentially, government.
Can’t wait to read “The Lusty Argonian Space Maid”.
My personal lore is that starfield exists inside one of Sheogoraths' creations.
Originally I was worried about the lack of vehicles, but as a dude in a space suit we seem fast as f
Lots of barren planets means modders have the chance to make settlements or even cities on them, with a good chance of not overlapping another mod. Thinking of all the house mods in Skyrim that used the same location/game cell.
SpaceRim seems just fine to me.
It looks more like Oblivion in space to me. It seems to give you a lot more ways to role-play than Skyrim.
looking forward to flying to that blue velour marble...always a highlight when earth is included
That's why people have been calling Starfield "No Man's Skyrim."
Mass Effect Skyrim would be more accurate
which is pretty dumb.
Isn't it weird that we've reached the point where you're actually happy that a new game is single player?
Lol, Skyrim is not a "series"...
Skyrim?
In Space?
on steroids?
YES PLEASE!!!
Can I just pay for my 5 copies now.
Skyrim + No Man's Sky + Privateer + Space Rogue.
Lets be honest, it is Outer Worlds with arcadey space flight and survival elements. The music even sounds like the Outer Worlds
One day this game will receive hardcore survival mods and a VR mod and I can't wait!
Yes! The modding community will make this game humongous!
I don't think a lot of people realize how much of fallout was randomly generated I expect that with a lot of skyrim type areas as well. Maybe even some procedural generation in there for the resource planets.
Dude I hope you get a review code, your content and coverage of this game is great!
He’s always been this way, brutally honest whilst still be genuine and gentle in his approaches.
@@Masshysteria40 not with every game, no.
Will Startfield have neverending mountains where you walk, walk and walk across pathways that weren't supposed to be walk on to get to a cave or a quest marker?
Skyrim in space. Genius Todd, genius.
I just want to be the sneaky Dragonborn of space in Starfield. Is a one-shot alien takedown too much to ask?
"Its just going to be Skyrim in space."
If that is true... im okay with it.
All those barran planets are blank canvasses for mods.
Skyrim in space? Skyrim is one of the best RPGs ever made, so put this formula in a space game and I’m sold.
I'm looking forward to Starfield in Tamriel.
a post by obsidianAnt only 1 minute ago? count me in
Not sure if I've missed it or not, but has anyone heard if it will have HOTAS support?
It's very clear it's closer to fallout 4 in terms of systems than Skyrim. Maybe the quest variety and size and the world being populated would be more akin to Skyrim, but generally Fallout was also full of npcs and quantity doesn't alter features, it just means more writing and voice acting.
The new stuff is ship building and space combat which I look forward to trying.
Our base defences will hopefully be competent while we are away too.
You say 'the sheer scale of the galaxies in Star Citizen' ? I didn't think there was many planets or systems in SC at all atm?!
I really can't wait for this not long now I'm having a few days off work holiday lol
Have zero problems about Skyrim on the space formula,I can play it 10+ year ... hurray 😊
Can’t wait!
I’m expecting Peter Crouch in a space suit
@OsidianAnt: Can we expect to hear from you in HCS Voicepacks if they get an agreement with Bethesda?
Obsidian big fan since elite dangerous. going to grind hard in this game, super excited. I feel like this game is going to give me the exploration i miss from elite dangerous and ship building plus fun material farming from no mans sky. lets goo
Did you get a review code for Starfield? I just saw a channel with a little over 30K subs get one. It's a dedicated Starfield channel, but still. A channel of your size focused on space games should have one.
As long as it's not as buggy and unfinished as Bethesdas other releases up until now I'll be happy.
For me at least, there's a very clear line through Bethesda's mainline RPGs. They iterate, add new features (and remove others), but there's a very clear evolution. Looking at the mainline games only:
* Morrowind: First 3D RPG made (not counting Arena and Daggerfall here).
Can’t wait to not wait the whole time when playing
Cant wait to play! Are you playing it early? I know some review codes rolled out yesterday.
This game has enormous potential. Let's see how much will be realised hands on...
have they mentioned adding VR support in the future?
I'm hyped idc what people think, the videos they have put out aren't plastered with (not final product, subject to change) like Anthem did, so even if we basically just get what they've shown its still a lot and looks fun.
Looking forward to this game. Thanks for the update.
People said Fallout 3 (and later 4) were going to be just oblivion/skyrim with guns.
Even if that ends up being the case (and I will argue it didn't end up being the case with my examples)? So what! Skyrim in Space sounds fun as hell.
ANT Please do livestream if you get Starfield early
You don't have to tease me anymore by saying "Skyrim in Space" I already pre ordered for my 1 pc I can only buy it once on steam!
I like Skyrim and I like space. Win-win.
Everything about this game sounds great, except there is no ground vehicle to drive around on these planets.
I plan on buying this game eventually, but I think it will not be in the first year or maybe two. Not just because I never really get anything the first year, but from what the system requirements look like.. A new pc will also be purchased.
Why am I getting a no man's sky flashback when scanning the environment
Damn... I still need to decide if I want the premium edition or the regular one. Would help to know how much the expansion will be when it releases. :D
I am excited to see how it looks on the Series S. If it’s good I’m saving up for one just for this game.
Im really trying to not get my hopes up... but all things considering, im super excited.
Skyrim had super immersive npc's
they walked through the map to get to quest locations, always enjoyed stalking everyone going to and from the greybeard meeting
many npc's have full daily routines, work & homeplaces, a inn to visit
hell even a graveyard^^
I fear most starfield npc's in citys will be generic unnamed ai
no point to follow them around or interact besides some simple loot^^
After fallout 4...im in a wait and see mode myself. I see this as a more elaborate Outer Worlds
So many content creators and influencers are getting Starfield codes. MS is pretty confident about it. hehe
If only 10% of the 1000 worlds have activities and stuff to do thats still huge. And all those empty planets become blank canvasses for all the modders ready to get cranking on this game
What kind of books will be in the game and do you mean full books or like RDR 2 where you can read a couple of pages out of a book?
The complexity is just astounding compared to something like GTA games, which are essentially just highly detailed open worlds with driving and shooting.
Skyrim + fallout + No Man's Sky + Mass Effect = Starfield
Were you able to get a review copy?
