So many people complaining about that HDC. It's actually a herringbone half double crochet (HHDC) You can use either type stitch; you will just have a different texture. Thanks for a great tutorial! I just worked mine in rounds without the slip stitch or chain 2. It looks great! I have that same yarn you're working with and love the silver tones.
It isn't a myth about the magic loop/circle. The magic loop/circle is used to create a sliding knot that is pulled tight to eliminate any opening at the crown of the cap. It isn't necessary to use the magic circle for this cap. One day you will be crocheting something and there will be an opening that is impossible to close because you used a slip knot instead of the magic loop/circle. That's the moment when you'll wish that you had learned how to make the slip knot (magic loop/circle) to tighten the work and you'll have no teeny opening at all. It is important to understand the purpose of "why" to begin a certain piece in a particular manner rather than discard it.
I couldn't understand why my hat was so very much smaller than yours, but I plugged along per your assurance and after I finished adding the first ear cover I realized you were doing a double crochet, not a half double crochet. I crochet using the US pattern/stitch style so now that I know why I had such a small hat, I'll frog it out and redo it with the double crochet (but not until the morning, it's bedtime by now). It is so quick and easy, your instructions and your video are great!
I had such a good laugh when she showed that.I'm left handed& I tried for years until I watched a young, left-handed, Spanish speaking man do it & that's when I finally got it~ After doing it for a while, I thought, Magic circle is just a glorified term for a slip knot. That's why I laughed when I saw this and thought "she's the one who should be teaching everyone the "magic circle"
i just started crocheting like two days ago and this is so lovely!! when i learn the basics and have had more experience, i’m really looking forward to coming back to this and making one of these. thank you for this!!
Thank you for the tutorial! I'm right handed but I could follow and now my son has a beanie with earflap. He loves it! Can't wait to make for my daughter!!
I CAN'T GET OVER HOW EASY YOU JUST MADE MAKING A MAGIC CIRCLE...I ALWAYS STRUGGLE , THANK YOU. I LOVE THIS HAT , I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO MAKE WITH YOU...
Hi, I started crocheting this beanie this morning. I had looked at your video last night and was scared to try it. I thought it was going to be complicated and I wouldn’t be able to keep up. But to my surprise I am able too. You explained every row very well. I am hoping to finish it today. Great job! Thank you!
I love this hat. Sat down and did 3 as gifts for Christmas my daughters saw the finished project and now one one as well. Will send picks as soon as possible. Thank you.
I just tried the way you do the half double crochet and I personally think it looks better the way you do it, I did them side by side and they are the same size, for anyone who's wondering, she creates these half double crochet by yarning over, inserting her hook into the stitch, pulling up a loop, but instead of yarning over and pulling through all three loops on her hook, she instead pulls through pulls up a loop and pulls that loop that she just pulled through the stitch, through the second loop on the hook behind it, and she yarns over and pulls through the remaining two loops on her hook, the stitch comes out looking like little z's, so pretty and they are about the same exact size as the traditional half double crochet, I hope I explained it well and I hope I saw it correctly!
I love your work, very beautiful! I am a very experienced crocheter, I don't upload videos on crocheting but I love to watch and sometimes make something that I like. I mean no disrespect nor mean to affend anybody, but what you call a HDC is definitely a DC...there is no other way of making a HDC. If anyone is feeling confused, look up "Basic Crochet Stitches" and enter HDC, I have been crocheting for 35yrs or more, and this is not a HDC. They look very similar, but I personally prefer the HDC because it looks tighter.
It is half DC not DC. I have been at this for over 30 years and I know European, African and American crochet terminologies. Thanks for the input though.
Love it!! Thank you so much for your tutorial . You are a wonderful teacher. Now, I can crochet some earflaps with my homespun yarn. I think sewing the buttons adds a wonderful look to the hat. Thanks again for sharing your talent and your time.
I love it! I just finished mine, I came to work and made this just now, thank you so much for all your tutorials, you are the best, you give instructions so well💜💛💚💙🖤
I love this hat and the size is great! I will definently subscribe and follow more of your videos. I do feel it would be ALOT more helpful if you had the camera going from the back instead though.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! It went sooo fast! I have never finished a beanie that fast and easy and without having to redo it :D :D :D (i am a begginer)
I think I figured it out lol. I used a poly yarn a friend of mine picked out for his hat and I done what she instructed and mine is NOT anywhere near the size she said it should be. I am going to have to frog all the way to 5 and keep increasing until I think it might fit his head then do the 6 rows of "HDC"
Beautiful work by the way. Wondered if you can help me. In my experience when I crochet over the strand. My friends seem to see it when they wash it. How can I fix that? TIA
This is a cute hat! Thank you for sharing how to make it! I'm making one for my husband, but the yarn he wants me to use is medium weight(4), and requires a 5mm hook. I'm assuming the instructions you give for this will not work because of thickness of the wool. I'm new to crochet and have no idea how to figure out how to compensate. Can someone please help? Thank you!
Can you tell me the gage of yarn. You said chunky but what is the number on the wool. Thanks Im Canadian and cant find the Chunky yarn you talked about.
Great tutorial! Im going to try this thanks for sharing. It also helped me to learn about a variation of the hdc called the herringbone hdc which is the one you're using if i'm not mistaken
Excellent tutorial, great techniques, easy to understand stitch explanations. Lovely, soft-spoken voice. Very difficult to hear. Please speak slightly louder? All volumes are turned up as far as they go....still rough time hearing you. Hugs!
It's a really nice headband. But, on your written pattern, I wish you would include "stitch counts" at the end of your increase rows & again for the decreasing. When I'm using a pattern...I make a point to count my stitches when I complete a RW-RND...that way I know I'm staying on track with the pattern. I watched the video hoping you mentioned them so I could write them down on the pattern for myself...but you don't
I’ve never wondered about this because it’s the same way when you work a square and not in the round but when I watched a tutorial on a sweater the person said it’s so your work doesn’t “lean” in one direction
Thank you, a wonderfully clear and easy to follow tutorial. Everything I need to know to crochet this beanie.

its understandable but it would be nice if it was explain what kind of stitches are going to be used in a project like this
Thank you for ending the myth of the easy "magic circle." The slip knot you show is the best!
Amy Lynn Hess I totally agree lol I’m not a fan of that darn magic circle!!!

Wow your a genius 👏👏👏
Been crocheting for over
50 yrs never thought to use a slip not
Thank you 👍😊

The slip knot (magic circle) tip was "everything!' Great tutorial. Can't wait make this hat!

i really miss your crochet video.they were very good and to the point..
We don’t want to see your face we want to see the yarn in your hand put the camera on your hand
The slipknot/magic circle is genius!!! Thank you so much
Thank you so much for the “magic circle” trick you show how to do.
So simple!
This is the best hat tutorial I’ve seen so far! Can’t wait to get started on it! Thank you!
My husband has been begging for one of these for months and I haven't found a pattern without the internet. Thank you
Love the hat. You are a very good and patient tutor. Thank you.

I love it! And I love the way you explain it! Thank you so much for being so kind to share this video!

it's called a herringbone half double crochet

In US terms, a hdc you pull through 3 loops.
Beautiful!!!!
It is half DC not DC. I have been at this for over 30 years and I know European, African and American crochet terminologies. Thanks for the input though.
mufasababe She is not wrapping yarn around her crochet hook before she goes in for the stitch as one would for a DC. She is doing a HDC.
Love it!! Thank you so much for your tutorial . You are a wonderful teacher. Now, I can crochet some earflaps with my homespun yarn. I think sewing the buttons adds a wonderful look to the hat. Thanks again for sharing your talent and your time.
curlycords you are quite welcome
Great tutorial. Love your suggestion of using the slip knot instead of the magic loop.
I crocheted one, but in blazing orange for hunting. Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for your efforts making this tutorial. I created my first hat with your video and I love it!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been looking for a video for this kind of hat. Thank a lot
Thank you for this tutorial. In England they call an American double crochet a Half-Double crochet, that it why some peaple are confused, great work.
Actually in England we call this American DC stitch a treble!
That's beautiful and looks easy to make ❤
It is!
I love the patten and yarn. I've used it before. ❤
Thank you so much for the tip of making the magic ring never could get it before now i got it thanks again
Can you please do a tutorial on the pink tunic, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you much.

Hi there, have you ever considered facing out with table in front of you so we can see exactly what you are doing? Thank you I love this hat.❤️
I love your hat. Your instructions are easy to follow. I will make one for a friend. May I know what yarn did you use? Thanks!

Perfect for my daugheters
Thank You

sandra kellar yes :)
JeffenyG
thank you
This is a herringbone half double crochet
Excellent teaching video! thanks much!
Are you working in UK terms or US terms? I'm asking because the UK and U Half Double crochet re different and I don't know which one to use
I think that you have the best style of hat but is it possible to get written instructions?
Thank you.
What size of hook are you using?
Woman, you are trully beautiful. Such a natural beauty. And i loved the pattern! Im going to make one for my brother :) New sub here ✋
Love it.... Looks great
can I button up the flap or its just decor the buttons?
The buttons are decorative, but you can make them functional by creating a button hole and buttoning it up.
Do you have a written pattern?
I need it too! she is working very fast. I love this hat!
Hey why don't you do any more crochet tutorials?
I have been extremely busy and I find I have less time to work on the tutorials. When I get more time, I would love to make more tutorials.
you extraordinárie . Tank you.
Is there a written pattern for this
SO CUTE! 👍🏾😊
thank you so much for making this video
Donde aparece el inicio del gorro?
Necesito el vi de el gorro con capucha en color rojo vino
Why does it look like you're doing double crochets?
Because this is a different way of doing the HDC
those are herringbone half double crochet
I was saying that exact thing and then continuing to count every stitch after that saying to myself,"am I going crazy here"?
Excellent tutorial, great techniques, easy to understand stitch explanations. Lovely, soft-spoken voice. Very difficult to hear. Please speak slightly louder? All volumes are turned up as far as they go....still rough time hearing you. Hugs!
will this fit a man's head as well?
nice work......thank you
It's a really nice headband. But, on your written pattern, I wish you would include "stitch counts" at the end of your increase rows & again for the decreasing. Please
why do I have to turn the work in every round?
I’ve never wondered about this because it’s the same way when you work a square and not in the round but when I watched a tutorial on a sweater the person said it’s so your work doesn’t “lean” in one direction
Very nice beanie
Yar was nice colour
Dziękuję...
Hola buenas tardes podrían ayudarme
You do DH not HDC But in your video you say HDC
I'm not sure why you would do a video saying to use a hdc when you are using a dc. The hat is not the same :/
Y love you, Y. Love This
11:00
very nice
I would like to see your hands
