  • 2007 Ford Mondeo Mk4 2L Diesel, Thermostat Housing Removal.
    The thermostat housings on ford mondeo 2l diesel engines are pretty reliable and i have never had a problem with one but just showing how the thermostat housing is removed from the engine. The exact same engine shown in this video can be found in a 2005 Volvo S40 2.0d. Volvo calls it the D4204T, and used it in the 2.0D C30/S40/V50 range from 2004 to 2012 with only a few minor differences .. The same engine is in the Peugeot 407 2.0HDi and the Ford Focus/C-max 2.0tdci

    Hi Alan,
    I was wanting to know what type of thermostat is inside the housing there? I want to put in a high flow version (about 30% more flow) to help with powershift automatic transmission cooling, before I decide to add an aftermarket trans cooler into the mix.
    Here in Australia these transmissions are known to behave strangely, including slippage, when they get a decent run, especially with our warmer weather. The heat the transmission makes will be cooled more effectively with a cooler running thermostat. (As it uses a heatsink/water/oil pass through type cooler as stock)

    Hi Alan! Quick one.What is that small bleed pipe for which is connected to the expansion tank?What is the purpose?One comes from radiator which is fine.But what is to do with another from thermostat?Thank you.

    Do you know how to remove the radiator fan on a Mk 4 Mondeo. I’ve got it loose at the 4 corner securing clips but don’t know how to get it raised sufficiently to clear the radiator clips. Thanks !

    Hi Alan, i have a big questions
    What could be a reason, that after replacement a thermostat top radiator hose to fall down?
    Incorrectly installed hose or defect of the new thermostat?
    It happened about 30 km after the exchange. While i driving i was felling power drop during acceleration and in this moment my indicator shows too high tempereture.

    How to check on this engine if there is air lock? My temperature gauge never goes past middle which is where it should sit. However, it does drop to 80 sometimes and then back up . Heater works fine. Coolant temperature sensor changed but issue not fixed. Any ideas? Thanks

    Up and down but it doesn't went to the red sign over 200
    What could possibilities
    There is no oil in water bottle no bubbles not whitish liquidity
    But in morning when I just put the ignition on with out starting the engine the temperature gauge goes to 70 instead of remaining on zero as it was park all night

    Great video as usual!
    Just about to replace the thermostat on my 09 2.0 tdci mondeo as the car is overcooling. I'm hoping this will solve my issue but I have heard that this may not cure the overcooling problem. Do you know of anything else that can stop the engine warming up properly?
    Cheers.

    • @alan4x

      hi, the thermostat is what allows the engine and heater to heat up first.... mondeos have a grille shutter mechanism in front of the radiator which should be closed when cold to aid warm up

    • @stuartprelude
      @stuartprelude 5 лет назад +1

      I replaced mine thinking that would cure my over cooling but it never, I even took the thermostat back and purchased a 2nd one from elsewhere....still no change.
      The temperature sensor has been changed and coolant temp checked with infra red thermometer, all good.
      I never knew about the grill flaps so I will check them as it never gets up to temp unless it's stuck in traffic.

      Alan Howatt
      Hi, just a wee update, I changed the thermostat unit and temperature sensor, flushed the system and refilled with fresh antifreeze.
      The engine still takes ages to heat up and even then barely gets above 70 degrees. Outside temperature was about 8 degrees so not particularly cold.
      I don’t understand why the engine isn’t heating up that much?....
      The manual says the thermostat starts to open at 92 degrees and is fully open by 99 degrees, so it is pretty much constantly closed and yet the engine still doesn’t get that hot.
      My car doesn’t have the shutter system you mentioned. I realise Diesel engines can run a bit cooler than petrol but I’m stumped as to why the engine runs so cool.
      Any pointers would be appreciated.
      Jim.

    • @alan4x
      @alan4x  5 лет назад +2

      hi, i would run your engine while the car is stationary and wait for the thermostat to open.... at that point the top radiator hose should get hot as the hot water flows through the thermostat....the temp gauge should be sitting around 90 degrees at this point/// if it is sitting at 70 degrees i would say your gauge is faulty...its worth a check

    • @stuartprelude

      @@jimgraham8504 mine is the exact same as yours. It's not the temperature gauge nor the temperature sensor on mine as I have checked temperature with a digital thermometer and swapped parts with known working ones.
      My car heats up to temperature after a while in built up traffic but it does drop quickly when the road clears and you move faster(more air over rad).
      I've had issues similar on other cars but it would usually be the EGR thermostat however this engine doesn't have one to my knowledge.
      The good thing is the cars auxiliary electric heater is brilliant and fast at heating the cab but it's not economic nor sensible to run the engine cold most of the time it's driven

    What size torx socket to remove the studs please. Are they 13mm as well?

    • @stevet603
      @stevet603 2 года назад

      Replying to myself; They are 7mm torx socket size and you might be able to remove the housing without removing them but without removing the battery it's a bugger to undo the first nuts (did it) but haven't tried to put together again yet!

      @@alan4x many thanks, mine gets up to 100+ without coming on, changed module on back of fans and checked wiring, including purple wire to ecu which had good continuity and s steady voltage. However it never boiled over, even with the heat of this summer. Is it worth changing the coolant temp sensor?

    • @alan4x
      @alan4x  5 лет назад

      it probably needs checking out properly...do the fans work when you switch your air con on...they should do

    • @stevenking2946
      @stevenking2946 5 лет назад

      @@alan4x Nope, i only found out about it as i had the air con re gassed and they said nothing is working, I originally thought aircon wasn't working as the low pressure sensor was stopping it. So i had it regassed, I've been into hidden menu on dash, got no dct codes and checked engine temp directly from sensor and it was at 100+ degrees without cooling fans on, I thought the air con was on a separate circuit to the cooling fan so wouldn't have effected the cooling. It's been plugged in but no fault codes.

      @@stevenking2946 Hy. Did you find a solution to your problem? Have exactly the same problem. Coolant temp would go up to 99C and the radiator fan still wouldnt turn on. It would turn on when AC is on or in DPF regen mode. Took the car to my mechanic and except a low pressure of the aircon, he found nothing. So he regased the aircon system and told me if I see the temp go up, just to turn the AC on and leave it untill the temp goes down. I swear that before this problem occured, I did not see the engine temp go over 75-80C.
