I love that you are doing the braces! I did mine in my 40s and it does take 12-18 months. I worked with an orthodontist and after the teeth are aligned the dr will straighten the roots by looking at your X-rays along the way. It is so worth it!!! Don’t be discouraged, it is so much easier to keep your teeth clean. So there are so many long term benefits!!!❤ love these socks!!

Watching this as I work on my MERMAID AVENUE SOCKS!!! It's kismet! And I can confirm and reaffirm that the stitch pattern is quite easy once you get into it.

Just found your channel this week right after graduating from college. Been HOOKED on your videos so much yesterday I probably watched 1/3 of your videos haha. The reason why that braces it takes around 1 yr or more to have braces is they don't want to move the teeth around too much too fast (because it's both painful & not practical). It takes time for the teeth to set in place anyways. If they did everything was done all at once the pain would be unbearable. The first week, even first couple days feels unbearable so I can't imagine the orthodontist adding chain bands, other bands, a headgear, etc. Some people's teeth move more quickly than others, which also plays a huge role. I can imagine never 100% predictable how teeth align no matter how the ortho plans it out

ahhh i love finding textured patterns that work well with speckles and this is perfect. the textures and the speckles amp each other perfectly rather than competing. off to purchase it right now! i like the hermione's everyday sock for speckled yarns as well.

I’ve recently become mildly obsessed with your channel (have your book + your mermaid pattern, in the process of watching all your vids). I adore you but, girl, I just have to say your pizza-loading-into-oven energy is wild 😂😂 I had to rewatch it and it made me laugh both times, lol.
Gosh it takes me a month to finish a pair of socks and you have me casting on weekly. I need am intervention or more needles but I do have the perfect yarn for these a colorways called shark bait

The two colors look sooo good together! I'm always surprised that despite how much you love to play with color, you always insist on making matching pairs. I think it would be a really fun video to go through your sock stash and either pick out some mis-matched coordinating pairs from existing socks, OR challenge yourself to make a few matchy but not identical single socks to pair with things in your stash. ☺️

My husband is a huge Band of Brothers fan and in fact he's watching it right now. I wanted to let you know about the WWII Museum in New Orleans. We found out about it from a travel buddy last year and then made a trip to see it this past Spring and it was truly amazing. I learned so much about the war that I never really knew. It's very interactive and informative. I feel like every American should be required to visit this place. Anyway - just wanted to share.

Love your videos! Thank you so much for creating them & for creating such beautiful sock patterns. Don't get discouraged with your braces; your teeth are looking great, and it will be so worth it after they come off. I had braces as an adult (in my 30s) and am so glad that I did! BTW, I was initially told that I would have to wear them for 18 months, but it only took 9 months for my teeth to move into place. Everyone's teeth are different, but maybe yours will straighten quicker than your orthodontist expected. (Fingers crossed!) A little advice....Wear your retainers religiously. It definitely makes a difference. Hope you remain safe during this active tornado season. Enjoy your trip!
My hubby had braces as an adult. His teeth moved fast but the roots (?) had to catch up. His ortho told him if they took the braces off before the roots were in place his teeth would just go back. A retainer would not be enough to hold them.
I bought this pattern after watching this video and I’m notorious for making mistakes during my first attempt at a pattern. But when I tell you, these small mistakes in this beautiful pattern look like random big waves breaking through the gentle waves of the sea, while also still looking like mermaid tails!! Thank you so much for this pattern!!!
Side note: I read Out Of The Blue by Jason June before knitting this pattern!!
I just bought the sock pattern! Super excited. I just wanted to let you know that as someone who works at a dental office, we always overestimate how long ortho will take because it's better to overestimate than to be disappointed :) It also allows extra time for "refinement", which is where the patient evaluates their smile themselves and decides if it's done or not.
Love that pattern and I’m thinking I have a perfect colorway in my stash to do. I’m on my 4th vanilla sock so I think once they are done I’ll venture to try this one. ❤
So you’re the lady behind the mermaid socks? You have convinced me. I had braces as an adult as well (although I was just turned an adult and supposed to have them as a teenager). Keep chugging… it is worth it! I feel your pain though 💜

I have tons and tons of variegated yarn (it’s my favorite) so finding a new pattern beyond a basic one to try out is so exciting. And I LOVE the pattern! Also congrats on the braces work and fingers crossed on getting them off sooner!

SOOOOO love your podcasts!!! As a new sock knitter I was drawn to all the highly variegated yarns and as I learned to knit socks a bit more advanced, I quickly figured out the pattern was lost on the yarn!!! I am TICKLED to have gotten this pattern and I see many, many mermaid avenue socks in my future!! :)

😢 My left wrist is still in a splint/brace until my Dr visit on June 6. I hope he gives me the ok. I’ve not been able to knit since the first of MARCH. I tried to knit but it made my wrist hurt. Just sitting and watching videos is all I can do. I can’t even do a lot of housework 😊 LOVE YOUR VIDEOS and YOUR BOOK ‼️
Bought this pattern, this will be my first ever textured sock. Can’t wait to watch your video tutorials as this is how I’ve learnt to knit and make vanilla socks only so far.
I’m in awe of those that can knit socks that fast! Ive been working on my current pair for 3 years now! 😮 but as you said in your book, you get better by knitting more!😅
I am just loving this pattern! Picked it up after watching your video. I’ve started my mermaid avenue socks out of the July Yarnable club delivery-cream with blue and red speckles, with contrast cuffs etc in cream color like the pink socks you just made. They are so pretty so far!
I knit up a pair of these socks a couple of years ago and I absolutely love them. This video made me want to dig up the pattern and a special (variegated) skein from my stash to make another pair!

Love-love-love this Mermaid pattern, Summer! I just purchased it and can't wait to start my socks! Thank you also for the discount! About your braces, your dentist is doing such good work. I already see a difference. My sons both wore braces for about two years when they were younger (they are now grown up). I will suggest following your orthodontist's instructions about wearing the retainer (if that's part of the plan), as they both stopped wearing theirs, so their teeth reverted a little bit. My brother got braces at the age of 40 bc he had a space between his two front teeth. His braces were behind his teeth, and now his teeth are together. Have a blast in Florida with your family! I'm working through your book...as in I'm on the 1st pattern but have read it cover to cover and am so excited! I'm trying to force myself to do each pattern in order 😳 lol! When I finish my treat to myself will be to make the mermaid ave socks and I already have the perfect skein in my stash, a teal, copper and pink variegated skein WITH SPARKLE! It's gonna be EPIC, k, gotta start knitting some socks 😁

I am so glad that you are back on the Tube! And I love this style of video! I am so intrigued to see other knitters’ habitat and distractions as they try to finish a project! I immediately ran out and downloaded the Mermaid Ave pattern and I have a ton of yarn that would work beautifully!! Re: adult braces…I did them when I was 32. It was absolutely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself! Don’t rush it you will be amazed when they come off!! I can’t wait to see your final result!

I was told 1.5 yr for my braces and had less than a year (as a teenager). But it can go the other way too. (If your teeth move easily, idk if it also means you have to be more vigilant with a retainer--the bane of my existence....) good luck!!!

If you take the braces off to soon your teeth will go right back to their original placement. It happened to my brother. Be prepared for retainers afterwards. Luckily you can take those out to eat. And some people only have to wear them at night. It's just very important to listen to the orthos advice. Beautiful socks!! That yarn is perfect for it!!
