  • This is one of the 25 wonders of the world, and it was truly wondrous!
I think one of the things that made me nervous was the fact that we were in a very volcanic area in Iceland. Silica is only found very deep within the earth, and the cause of the blue in the water. I also didn’t really know what to expect as far as the depth or what I would be stepping on, as you can’t see to the bottom. In this case, silica completely sealed the lava field and so it actually feels like the bottom of a smooth pool. It is no deeper than 4’8”.
When this lagoon first burst forth so many of the Icelanders were fearful of this Blue water. It took them a while before they dared dip their toes in it. Once they got more comfortable with going in, people were finding they were finding relief from skin conditions, such as eczema.
It is located in the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is an area that is covered with black lava fields. The geothermal factories, located close by cause all the steam that you see in the air and it gives this area a very mysterious feel.
It’s beautiful to go on a really cold day to experience the warmth of the hot springs. We also enjoyed a little bit of time in the outdoor sauna as well!
After our 3 1/2 hours there, we felt very relaxed and ready to continue on our day!
This is definitely an experience that I won’t forget !
