    Can't believe I literally watched *80* minutes of some dude showing random Windows programs at all possible scales... You must be really devoted into making these videos, great job!!
    P.s. IIRC, in Windows 8.1 scaling was improved a little in one of the later updates (which sometimes gets called as "Windows 8.1.1" among the themers community as it've broken all the custom themes again, lol). Not sure which version used in the video, though.

    39:52 Here's why there's no date on 400% and 500%: The taskbar's height is dependent on 2 things, the base height done by explorer.exe, and the ContentMargins from the msstyles. For the large taskbar, the base height is 32px, while ContentMargins add 4px at the top and 4px at the bottom, so it becomes 40px tall. Most ContentMargins do not scale, so on 500% the height will be 168px (160px base height + 4px top ContentMargins + 4px bottom ContentMargins). Small taskbar is worse as its base height is only 16px, while having 7px of top and bottom ContentMargins, which make it 30px tall. On 500% scaling, the small taskbar is only 94px tall. That's around 35% shorter than how it should be! However, this bug has been fixed in Windows 10. The exact same thing was the reason why the spacing between the menu items didn't scale from Windows Vista to 10.

    Windows 11 elements scale so nicely because they've been completely rewritten with XAML. Also every icon on new system programs is now an SVG and since it's flat design (there is pretty much no details besides opacity and blurring) everything "just works".

    Great video! I work on making and modifying msstyles, so I pretty much know all of this.
    Also, XP on 125% use the titlebar buttons that are intended to be used on 150%, which shows how poor the DPI implementation is in XP. The only way you can get the real 125% titlebar buttons is to decrease the titlebar size by 1 while on 125%.
    Windows 7 and 8.x however, do have 200% titlebar buttons in their msstyles, but they are unused? I'm pretty sure there are 200% scale titlebar buttons in those msstyles, but I haven't scaled these OSes to 200% before.

    • @World_of_OSes
      @World_of_OSes  Год назад +4

      Yes, the caption buttons in Windows XP did seem a bit big at 125% scale, and the right size at 150%. I was surprised that even in Windows 11 the caption buttons for Win32 still don't scale above 200% when most of the UI scales OK now up to 400%, and even the menu bar spacing is fixed. In UWP apps the caption buttons scale to 400%.

      @@World_of_OSes You should look at how Microsoft makes msstyles. It is pretty much why Win32 UI scaling sucks.
      First off, it uses images. For the ones used as backgrounds (buttons, combo boxes, menus, etc) they only use one image for all DPI levels. That's why most of the UI has a 1px outline regardless the DPI.
      The "3D theme" looking messed up in Vista and 7 is because Microsoft specified the sizing margins (which specifies the parts that should not be stretched) to also include the glow in the images for these UI elements, if they have only specified the outline, the "3D theme" would've looked normal on higher DPI.
      DWM titlebar buttons do not scale in the same ways as other scaled UI controls (such as checkboxes, combobox glyphs, and even the Basic theme's titlebar buttons), as DWM titlebar buttons use proprietary parts, for 100, 125, 150, and 200% respectively, while anything else that's scaled in the msstyles uses MINDPI (it has 7 increments in Windows 10, previously 5 in Windows 8.1 and 3 in Windows 8 and 7), and these increments can even be modified to any DPI (default is 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 400%), so if you disable DWM on a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11, the buttons would scale to 400%. @@ThatRandomToast 1600x900 is probably the sweet spot for 14 inch laptops. 1920x1080 is good on 17 inch laptops and monitors up to 24 inch. 2560x1440 can be good for 27 inch monitors and 32 inch monitors, but I don't like screens that big anyway because of the head movement. To use 4K at 100% scale you would need a 40 inch monitor which would just be ridiculous. I quite like 1920x1200 on a 24 inch monitor because it has a bit more vertical space, the pixel density is low enough that I can easily use it at 100% scale and the size is small enough that I can see the entire screen without having to make significant head movements.

    • @World_of_OSes
      @World_of_OSes  Год назад +2

      1920x1080 at 100% probably is still a bit small on a 14 inch laptop, 1366x768 is just not enough real-estate to do anything with, 1600x900 is the happy middle-ground for a 14 inch laptop.

    • @World_of_OSes
      @World_of_OSes  Год назад +2

      DPI scaling is actually not too bad in modern versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, as long as you have it at exactly 200%, so that non-DPI-aware apps can get nearest-neighbour scaled. 125% and 150% are bad because they make non-DPI-aware apps look blurry. So you need a screen that is either low enough to use at 100% (90 - 120 DPI), or high enough to use at 200% (180 - 240 DPI), DPIs between 120 and 180 are bad because they are too high to use at 100%, but too low to use at 200%.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon Год назад

      @@ThatRandomToast I personally would consider the sweet spot for 100% 1080p to be around 14 inch, while 15.6 inch really need some sort of custom resolution display, something between 1080p and 1440p. My laptop has 14 inches screen with QHD (2560x1440) resolution. I broke my old 1080p screen, so I decided to upgrade to QHD one since it was cheaper (brighter, and wider color gamut to ARGB) lol. At 100% scaling is just so small, if I need the real estate then I will tolerate it. Normally I use 125% scaling since it should have similar scaling to 1080p@100% so the text looks sharper except that some programs are just blurry. 150% is the scaling when I take off my glasses. higher than that are disgustingly big for me, I really hate it.

      When choosing a display, it is best to get one that is either low enough DPI to use at 100%, or high enough to use at 200%. In-between is bad because it makes the UI too small at 100%, but too big at 200%, so you end up having to go 125% or 150% which causes the non-DPI-aware apps to look blurry.
