  • Jupiter 8 model expansion for# Zenology review.
Another Model expansion came out for Zenology. This time it recreates the cool sounds of the classic Jupiter 8. You know the Jupiter 8 , Yes you do know it sounds. But do you know the actual synth? Maybe not. In this video, I go back to the original Jupiter 8 specs to understand it's limits and better understand it's importance in the history of synthesizers. After that i compare the 3 1st plugins : the Roland Plugout VS the Zenology Model Expansion VS Arturia Jup-8 V3.

ACB just sounds so much better than the others. I want to get excited about Zenology, but it sounds like they had to sacrifice too much audio quality for CPU efficiency.

Roland have now released Jupiter-8, Juno-106, SH-101 & JX3P model expansions for Fantom workstation, downloadable from Roland Cloud for free as part of the subscription which is pretty cool to have. If you don't know its like MC-707 bigger brother with full Zen engine, Sampler, Ableton-like 16 track clip sequencer. I spend most my time on Fantom & MPC-X, sounds great.

As a matter of fact Zencore opens up a hell of a lot of possibilities! I'm into the hardware but if your into the software I don't see anything wrong with that! To each his own!

Great video! I love the Zenology plugins. I too have a JP-8000 and use it in Mode2 as a controller for Roland Cloud also. I’m stunned on how superb the Zenology synths Sound.
The Zenology layout is very user friendly.
Roland have defo produced something good here

thanks for the videos...to my ears the plug out sounds subjectively the best...my computer specs are similiar to yours so i'm worried about it's cpu usage but i'm willing to commit the sound to audio in a bump for the marginally better quality...i know most people won't know or care but im doing it for me...lol

Thank you, very useful comparisons. I've been playing around with Zenology for a month or so and really like the low CPU usage compared to the plug-outs as you have pointed out. The real USP for me is the ability to take the sounds I like from Zenology and export them for use on my very portable Roland MC-101. It's a bit piecemeal as you have to load them one by one from the SD card (no load bank option as far as I know), but I just load presets as I need them. You can fit loads on the SD card as they are just presets, the Zen Core engine does the rest.

I'm actually testing an MC-101 right now. I have not yet used it with Zenology. This weekend maybe.

@@Nu-trix ah cool, worth a how-to video in itself I think. In a way using Zenology gets around the lack of a sound editor for the MC-101.

I have had a months free trial and tried all the plug ins and the one that really stood out for me was the system 8. It’s just fantastic So I ended buying it at the end of the trial and went onto the mid tier which gives you the 808 and the d50 Plus the ZENOLOGY. I have an sh2 which I compared to the vst and to my ears there’s practically no difference

  • @ge0rgeharris218

All of this stuff is subjective. Either you like it or you don't. What Roland is doing with the Zencore keyboards is a tremendous idea! I bought the Fantom 06 and think its great. So much so I'm going to purchase The Fanton 7 with the analog filter! And I'm keeping the Fanton 06. I'm going to use them together!

I liked my MKS80 but I sold it because having to constantly tune it was a pain in the butt and I was worried that it would eventually break down and would become a money pit. So I sold it, took the money and ran to buy something else - lol. Hopefully Roland will make an MKS80 plugin. :)

Roy Maya I totally understand. I did the same with 4 different mini-moog model d synths. A plug-in of the MKS80 would be welcomed indeed.

  • @KordTaylor

Yeah. I THOUGHT they would just optimize the ACB plugs vs. create a whole new thing. 😩 I really wanted to get a System 8 but now they would point me to a Jupiter X which is nhich is not as knobby-synthy as I’d hope for.

is it just me or zenology uses double the CPU of both the plug out (ACB) and Arturia?

In normal use Zenology uses less cpu. When I switch between then, i did actually switched between tracks with a different amount of clips being triggered.

Maybe you should take a mono synth and explain synthesis a little in Detail so people can apply it to the plugins and understand a little what is going on rather than just fiddling with the controls i.e. How to architect a bass sound or a lead sound just a idea as it's common across most synths be it hardware, plugin of iPad for people starting out.Im sure you have already covered some of this beforehand in some of your videos but you are always learning what ever level you are at,maybe over a few videos or your live stream project.Anyway did you check out the preview of the new mandalorian season 2..you just may make me buy a pc again after this video.Long live Roland thanks Nu-Trix

The people that say you must have the real deal are normally the ones that don’t play music much, or at least not with real humans. They just post on YT/FB etc and make comparisons and tell us how poor the emulations are. Forgetting of course that the originals were also pretty poor and had issues. Thats why so many people gave up on them back in the day.

  • @supremelc3667

Original hardware is better? I beg to differ.... believe me... nobody outside of synth snobs is ever going to know the difference or even care... save your money; Vsts all day.

VS the ACB based VSTs, they are loud, super compressed, and heavily EQ'd compared to the real deal. To me the EQ can be dealt with but the lack of dynamics because the brickwall compression in place, make these not a good candidate for me. I do however love the Zen stuff. I am not sure at all what the complaints are about Zen, as they sound natural, drift, and full range to me.
I do agree though, at this point especially with TAL now joining the party now, that we now have the technology, CPU power, to successfully replace all this old hardware, at least for the not millionaire user. And great thing is, along with TAL you have companies like SoundForce that are making hardware controllers (like the upcoming SFC-8 Jup 8 that will work with all the plugs) , that will be a total game changer here!
