    Lovely boat and fantastic reverse layout! Not sure how hot your stove walls get but the basket of papers/magazines right next to it makes me very nervous! It will only take too much heat from the stove or a stray spark to start a fire.

    Happy New Year. We both hope that 2024 see you happily cruising a lot of new canals and enjoying many comfortable moorings along the way.
    Watt a wonderful looking boat you have! Even the layout is about 80% as we would choose and the colour scheme is spot on. It is nice that you are up front with both the good and the less than good (the grill). Yours is only the second boat that I have seen a stove of this kind installed on - and yours appears to have more oven and hotplate space than I remember the other one having. The fact it gives you hot water and radiator heating is wonderful too.
    I do have questions though (there are always questions)
    1. Water. Do you have a tank or are you fully reliant on taking canal water at the time you want to use it? I ask this for two reasons: (a) the flow rate to be able to produce water enough for showers and washing machine etc and (b) to be able to draw water from cleaner sections of canal and live of the tank in the more polluted sections. Even if the system can cope with heavy pollution it just seems it would tax the system less this way.
    2. Your main propulsion and charging systems. Is this all electric drive with solar and a backup generator?
    3. If using a generator, how are fuel costs so far? I note on one other well known vlog they have had some troublesome teething issues that have meant they have been spending more on fuel than they were spending on their previous diesel boat. No doubt it will be solved, but it is worrisome.
    4. I'm not asking for a precise answer for this as no two boats are the same anyway, but we are looking at potentially retiring home to UK and spending as long as possible afloat drifting around the country. After 35 years abroad I have no real spot to centre on anymore other than near our son and he is not fully settled in one place yet. 35 years abroad means that I am quite out of touch with costs in UK and I never knew the cost of narrow boats in the first place. I'm trying to find a ball park figure for an electric narrow boat. We love the idea of electric - we are both eco-minded but we also love the idea of quiet cruising. I grew up sailing but obviously sails are not an option on the canals and age means that permanent sea cruising is not really an option. I still want the quiet that a sailboat gives, so electric is the answer.
    Thank you in advance, Tim and Jalika, Malaysia.

    • @ElectricNarrowboat
      @ElectricNarrowboat  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Tim, Jalika and Malaysia. Thank you for your kind words about Watt Way. I will do my best to answer all of your questions.
      1 The water system. The way this works is that you filter water as and when you need it and it is stored in a tank ( mine is stainless steel). I have a small hose that I drop into the canal or river when I need water. Having said that at the moment I’m not happy with the system as it doesn’t filter properly but the company is coming in the new year to change it so fingers crossed.
      2 My boat only has an electric motor as it’s form of propulsion. I absolutely love it. My motor is 15 kw and water cooled. I am assured that this is powerful enough to attempt the Ribble Link to the Lancaster Canal. I shall be finding out if that’s true maybe this year.
      3 My boat is designed by a company that only makes electric Narrowboats. I chose him because he is a specialist. I have met a few other electric boats on my travels and those seem to have a lot more problems than I do. I have no idea how much diesel I would have used on my travels if my boat had a traditional diesel engine. I have spent less than £1000 on fuel in the almost 2 years I’ve been cruising.
      4. Watt Way was bespoke built for me. I chose everything. The wood you see on the floor and up to the gunwales is all reclaimed timber. I paid £170,000 for her 2 years ago. Things seem to have gone up in price since then so I don’t know how much she would be now.
      For me electric is perfect. I enjoy the quiet and the lack of diesel smell. I creep up on wildlife that others don’t see. The massive reduction in my personal carbon footprint makes me happy. I still have an impact but nowhere near as large as I did in a house with a car.
      Looking forward to sharing my adventures with you all in 2024
      Cheers Anita, Charlie and Fudge 🥰

      @user-xw6wj2qh5n 7 месяцев назад

      @@ElectricNarrowboat Hi Anita, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer so comprehensively.
      1. The water system is something that does seem to hold a lot of potential issues. If we filter only at the time we want to use it, the lack of anything to act as a preservative is a good thing. The problem then is that if we want to run a washing machine, have a shower or do something else that requires a faster flow of water than an RO system can supply, then we are stuck. To overcome this we have the option of adding a tank, but purified water by itself won't stay pure for long. The water companies spent money putting stuff like chloramine, or chlorine dioxide to prevent it becoming unsafe to drink due to the time between it leaving the plant and actually being used. I have dealt with purifiers in the past - but for use in the tropics in rescue and emergency relief situations. It is fascinating but complex in some ways. It is not something I have taken into consideration for a narrow boat, but we are used to using quite a lot of water - such is the lifestyle in the tropics where it is hot and sweaty all the time. I will have to look into it as an option and I am glad to hear your supplier is going to sort out the issues you have. I will be watching your vlogs to see how that goes. Do you ever use water points such as when in the more heavily polluted areas?
      2. Having enough power to cope with things like the Ribble Link and crossing The Wash, plus to be able to push upstream on tidal rivers is something you need to know you have in advance rather than finding out the hard way. Glad you have that sorted and also it is nice to know the figure that is enough for a narrow boat - 15 KW. I will remember and note that down.
      Spending GBP500 a year on fuel seems cheap since I presume this includes your cooking and heating. Even a small house would go through this in just a few short months I think in UK these days (watching prices rise there is scary).
      3. I think you are right that the propulsion system and all related systems should be installed by a company that really specialises in electrics. I don't know whether there are many special design aspects that have to go into the hull though. I do wonder whether I would be able to save any significant amount by buying a hull from one place, doing the propulsion, solar, battery etc install in a place such as where yours was done and the interior fit out in another would be worth doing. Budgets do matter - all the more so due to foreign exchange rates. the Malaysian Ringgit is not a strong currency. I note Paul and Anthony have been having issues with their electric system - proving expensive to run so far - a lot of diesel used.
      4. Silent cruising and being able to hear nature and the water gurgling as the boat moves along. Big things for us - especially me. I grew up on sail boats, so I don't like engines on all the time.
      We will both be continuing to watch your videos in 2024. Tim & Jalika in Malaysia.

    What a lovely boat. Have you lived on it long? Did you buy it like that? How does your system cope with running hot baths, I would never of thought there was enough hot water on board? Fantastic kitchen - do you have enough electricity to cope with a large freezer? Solar? What turned you off gas? Sorry for all the questions.

      Hello Mike. Never be sorry for asking questions 🥰 I’ve lived on Watt Way for almost 2 years now. I sold everything I had, house, car, furniture to change my life. She was purpose built especially for me as I was unable to buy an electric Narrowboat secondhand at the time. I have an electric immersion to heat my tank of water which is enough for a bath (or shower) my multifuel stove also has a back boiler which heats the water in winter. I have a water filter system that allows me to filter from rivers or canals so I never run out of water. There is another video of the electrical system on board 🥰🥰

      @@ElectricNarrowboat Will you do a video on what it's like living with an electric narrowboat as opposed to a diesel powered one? Would it of saved electricity to have a gas stove? Things like what's the range or is it infinite on a sunny day? is there a small diesel generator (just in case)? How long do the batteries last? Do the anodes last longer or shorter with an electric boat? The more I see of your boat then more jealous I become :)

      Hi Tony. It is called a high and mighty from Chilli Penguin stoves. They are made in Wales 🥰🥰. I love it

    Is the couch comfortable? Do you have a television?

    • @ElectricNarrowboat
      @ElectricNarrowboat  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Susan. The couch is ok but I use cushions to support my back as it’s very upright. I have a small smart TV that connects to my 4G wifi

      That's what came to my mind when I saw it i.e. that it was too upright. I dislike that style as it always hurts my back.@@ElectricNarrowboat

    Apart from that, a lot of the people who supply electricity to most houses in the UK BURN stuff to make your electricity 🤔

      Hi Chris. I’m glad I could have lots more years with my cat Fudge. 23 is an excellent age for a cat to get to 🥰🥰
